Bhavat Bhavam: The House From the House, All 12 Counted

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Take any house of the chart, read its number, and count that many houses again starting from it. Wherever the count stops is that house’s bhavat bhavam. The arithmetic behind it is one line, and it has a few consequences that are easy to miss: the answer is an odd house in every case, the six even houses never come out of it, and each odd house is the answer for exactly two houses that face each other across the chart. All twelve counts are worked out below, with the site’s houses table read alongside.

Bhavat Bhavam Meaning (भावात् भावम्)

Bhava is a house, and bhavat means “from the house”, so the phrase, written भावात् भावम् in Devanagari, reads “the house from the house”. In the Parashari tradition the concept is that a house’s matters are carried a second time by the house that lies as far from it as it lies from the lagna. The 4th from the 4th, the 5th from the 5th, the 10th from the 10th: each of these is treated by that tradition as a supporting seat for the house it was counted from. This page sets out where those seats fall. It does not go on to read them.

The houses here are whole-sign houses counted from the lagna, the convention every table on the houses hub uses. Counting is inclusive: the house you start from is number one, so the 7th from the 1st is the 7th and the 7th from the 7th brings you back to the 1st.

The Count, and Why It Lands on an Odd House

Counting n houses from house n, inclusively, moves the count on by one house fewer than n. That puts the answer at house 2n−1, folded back into the twelve: house ((2n−2) mod 12) + 1. The quantity 2n−2 is even, an even number stays even after the remainder by twelve is taken, and adding one makes it odd. So the result is one of the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th, and none of the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th is ever reached this way.

The two keys columns are copied from the first two keys of each house in the site’s houses table, unedited. Setting them side by side shows where the tradition places a house’s second seat; whether the two lists echo each other in a given chart is a judgement for whoever reads that chart, and the table makes none.

Each Odd House Answers for Two Houses That Face Each Other

Twelve starting houses and only six possible answers means the answers are shared, and they are shared evenly. Adding six to n adds twelve to 2n−2, which the remainder throws away, so house n and house n+6 give the same result. Those two are the 7th from each other, a house and the one opposite it:

  • The 1st is the bhavat bhavam of the 1st and of the 7th.
  • The 3rd is the bhavat bhavam of the 2nd and of the 8th.
  • The 5th is the bhavat bhavam of the 3rd and of the 9th.
  • The 7th is the bhavat bhavam of the 4th and of the 10th.
  • The 9th is the bhavat bhavam of the 5th and of the 11th.
  • The 11th is the bhavat bhavam of the 6th and of the 12th.

The 1st is the one house that is its own bhavat bhavam: counting one house from it goes nowhere. Its partner in the list is the 7th, because seven houses from the 7th lands back on the lagna. Every other house sends the count somewhere else, and the gap grows with the number: the 2nd reaches the 3rd, one house on; the 6th reaches the 11th, five on; the 12th goes eleven on and stops at the 11th, the house just before it.

Bhavat Bhavam of the 8th House Is the 3rd

Eight houses from the 8th takes the count past the 12th and round to the 3rd. It is also a count the site’s houses table itself relies on. The 8th House carries the keys “longevity”, “sudden change”, “occult and research” and “inheritance”, and its only classification there is “Dusthana (malefic house)”. The 3rd House carries “younger siblings”, “courage and effort”, “communication style” and “short journeys”. Its classifications begin with “Upachaya (malefics gain here)” and end with “Dusthana in some traditions”, and the table’s own explanation of that last label is that some traditions count the 3rd among the dusthanas “because it is the 8th from the 8th”.

So the 3rd ends up with two labels pulling in different directions, and bhavat bhavam is the reason for one of them. The upachaya houses page covers its upachaya label; the dusthana houses page notes that the site’s lordship tables leave the 3rd out of the dusthana count. Nothing in either label, or in this count, is a statement about anyone’s siblings or lifespan.

Counting Any House From Any Other

Bhavat bhavam is a special case of a count used all through house work: the kth house from house n is ((n + k − 2) mod 12) + 1. Set k equal to n and the 2n−1 rule comes back out. The houses table uses the general form in several of its own descriptions, and each of them checks out against the formula:

  • “the 3rd is the 12th from the 4th”: twelve from the 4th gives the 3rd.
  • “the 8th is the 2nd from the 7th”: two from the 7th gives the 8th.
  • the 2nd and 7th as “the 12th from the 3rd and 8th”: twelve from the 3rd gives the 2nd, and twelve from the 8th gives the 7th.
  • “the 11th is the 12th from the 12th”: twelve from the 12th gives the 11th, which is also the 12th house’s bhavat bhavam from the table above.

The quotations are the counting phrases only. The sentences around them give readings; those belong to the houses table, appear on the individual house pages, and are not repeated here.

A Bhavat Bhavam Calculator in Three Steps

No tool is needed. Double the house number, subtract one, and if the result is more than twelve, subtract twelve. The largest possible figure is 2×12−1 = 23, so one subtraction is enough every time. For the 10th: 20−1 = 19, then 19−12 = 7, the 7th. For the 5th: 10−1 = 9, the 9th, with nothing to subtract. To name the sign sitting in that house for a particular chart you need the lagna sign, which the free kundli prints; count from the lagna sign the same way.

Applying the Count Again: Where the Chain Ends

A property of the arithmetic, not a technique this page knows any text to use: feed each result back in and the chains settle in only two ways. The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, the four angles, all arrive at the 1st and stay there; the 10th, for instance, goes 10th to 7th to 1st and stops. Every other house ends up circling between the 5th and the 9th, since each is the other’s bhavat bhavam: the 12th runs 12th to 11th to 9th to 5th and from there alternates between those last two. It is a neat pattern of the doubling, and it is offered as nothing more.

What This Page Leaves Out

It gives no reading of a spouse, a child, a parent, a sibling or anyone’s health from the house a count lands on, and it does not say a house is helped or harmed by its bhavat bhavam. The tradition uses the count as one input among many, together with the lords, the occupants and the drishti on each house, and the weight it carries in a chart is the reader’s call. Counting from the Moon or from any house other than the lagna follows the same formula with a different starting point; the page keeps to the lagna. For the significations of each house in full, the twelve pages under houses carry them, and the bhava chalit page covers the other way houses get counted, from the lagna’s degree rather than its sign. In Hindi: भावात् भावम्: भाव से भाव, सभी बारह भावों की गणना.

Start the Count From Your Lagna

The free kundli prints your lagna sign and degree, which is the starting point for every count on this page. It does not read the houses for you.
