Chandra Bala (Chandrabalam): The Moon’s House From Your Rashi

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Chandra Bala Meaning (चंद्र बल)

Chandra Bala, often written chandrabalam in the south, is the Moon’s strength for a given day, judged by one thing only: which house the transiting Moon occupies when counted from your own Moon sign. Your rashi is the 1st, the next sign the 2nd, and so on round to the 12th. The count is arithmetic. What each of the twelve positions is good for is a muhurta convention, and the site reports it as one, from its own table, including the places where lineages disagree.

It is a check for choosing when to begin something, not a mood forecast and not a score. The convention never uses it alone; it pairs it with Tara Bala, which counts nakshatras from your birth star, and then weighs the tithi, nakshatra, karana and yoga of the day.

How to Check Chandra Bala

Find your Moon sign with the moon sign calculator. Find the Moon’s sign on the day in question, which every dated panchang page prints with its degree. Count from yours to the day’s, inclusive. If your Moon is in Vrishabha and the day’s Moon is in Kanya, the count is Vrishabha 1, Mithuna 2, Karka 3, Simha 4, Kanya 5: the 5th house. Then read the band below. Because the Moon changes sign every two to two and a half days, the answer can change partway through a date, which is why the dated pages say between which two sunrises the next change falls.

Favourable: the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th. In the site’s table these are a green light for starting, with the warning that the classical use is narrow: it is not a promise about outcomes. Within the six, the table singles out the 3rd as the position most often used for beginning work that needs pushing, the 10th as the usual choice for anything that has to be seen, and the 11th as traditionally the strongest of the six for anything undertaken for gain. The 6th is the surprise, and the table calls it counter-intuitive: the Moon there is read as overcoming opposition, so the position is chosen for confronting a dispute or clearing a debt.

Middling: the 2nd, 5th and 9th. Read as neither help nor hindrance. This is the band the lineages argue over. Some read the 9th, the house of fortune, as favourable outright; some read the 2nd as unfavourable. Where a day matters, the table says, the tithi, nakshatra and karana should decide it instead.

Avoided: the 4th, 8th and 12th. Traditionally not chosen for beginning anything of consequence. The 8th, Chandrashtama, is the only position every lineage agrees on, and it has its own dated list for every rashi: Chandrashtama days 2026–2027. The 4th and 12th are widely but not universally included. The table’s reason is direction, not a malefic nature: the 4th draws inward, and the 12th is loss in the sense of outflow rather than misfortune, so neither suits starting something.

Not the Same Map as the Birth Chart’s Houses

Anyone who knows the natal house classes will notice that Chandra Bala sorts the twelve differently. The six favourable positions are the four upachayas, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, plus the 1st and the 7th. The 6th is a dusthana in the house table and favourable here. The 9th, which the house table calls the strongest of the auspicious houses, is only middling here, along with the 5th, another trikona. The avoided three, the 4th, 8th and 12th, are the group the house table names the moksha trikona. None of this is a contradiction. The natal classes describe what a house signifies in a chart; Chandra Bala asks a narrower question about the Moon’s day-to-day position, and the answers are not expected to match. The natal side is covered in the twelve houses guide and the upachaya houses page.

How Many Days of 2027 Fall in Each Band

Six favourable positions out of twelve suggests half the year, and that is close: measured from the Moon’s sign changes for 2027, every rashi gets between 178.7 and 185.5 favourable days, the fewest for Kanya (Virgo) and the most for Makara (Capricorn). The spread exists because the Moon crosses some signs faster than others, so a rashi whose favourable signs include the slow ones gets more time in them.

The avoided band barely moves at all: 91.1 to 91.4 days for every rashi. The 4th, 8th and 12th from any sign are four signs apart, spaced evenly round the zodiac, so every rashi’s avoided signs take in the Moon’s fast and slow stretches alike. The middling band, three signs that are not evenly spaced, varies more, from 88.2 to 95.1 days.

What This Page Does Not Do

It does not tell anyone how a day will go. A band is a convention for choosing when to start something, reported with its disagreements, and the day counts above are measurements of the Moon, not a ranking of anyone’s year. For an event that matters, the day’s other factors and your own chart decide more than this one count does. In Hindi: चन्द्र बल: आपकी राशि से चन्द्रमा का भाव.
