What Chandra Mangal Yog Is (चन्द्र मंगल योग)

The name pairs Chandra, the Moon, with Mangal, Mars, and the usual definition asks only that the two stand in the same sign at birth. With whole-sign houses, the reckoning this site uses, the same sign is also the same house. That is the whole test in its common form, and it needs nothing but the two planets’ signs.

A wider version is found too. Some astrologers count the Moon and Mars facing each other across the chart, each in the 7th from the other, as a form of the yoga by mutual aspect. The planet table explains why that is the only mutual aspect possible: the Moon’s entry gives it the 7th house only, while Mars’s aspects are the 4th, 7th and 8th houses, so the two can meet in aspect only across the 1/7 axis.

A Little Under a Twelfth of the Year

The Moon and Mars share a sign for 7.7% of the clock hours of 2026 and 7.9% of 2027, intersecting the Moon’s sign changes with Mars’s in the DE421 ingress table. The opposition form holds for 8.6% and 8.7%. Both are shares of time in the sky, not counts of people born with the yoga. The figure sits a little below one-twelfth because Mars itself moves forward through the zodiac most of the time, so the Moon needs slightly more than one circuit of the signs to come back to it.

Every Stretch, November 2026 to December 2027

A Chandra Mangal yoga calculator in its simplest form is this table. From 1 November 2026 to the end of 2027 the pair shares a sign in 17 stretches, about once a month, and each full stretch lasts between two and two and a half days, the time the Moon takes to cross the sign Mars is in. The odd one out falls in Sagittarius in late December 2027: the Moon will only just have arrived when Mars enters Capricorn on 27 December 2027, and the two meet again in Capricorn two days later. The last column answers the 7th-house question: it names the lagna for which that shared sign is the 7th house.

Dates are IST and by the day; a stretch that begins late in the evening can show a start date a day before most of its hours. For the 7th-house reading, whole-sign houses make it a lagna question only: the pair is in the 7th whenever the lagna is the sign opposite the shared one, so the same stretch is the 1st house for one lagna, the 7th for another and something else for the other ten. Mars’s Dignity in Each Shared Sign

Astrologers who read the yoga weigh the condition of Mars in the shared sign. The planet table gives Cancer as Mars’s sign of debilitation and Capricorn as its exaltation sign, and both turn up in this window.

• Leo: six stretches, with Mars in a friend's sign.
• Virgo: two stretches, with Mars in an enemy's sign.
• Libra: two stretches, with Mars in a neutral sign.
• Scorpio: one stretch, with Mars in its own sign.

• Capricorn: one stretch, with Mars exalted.

Mars is in Cancer when the window opens and moves into Leo on 12 November 2026, but it does not stay. The ingress table has it going back into Cancer on 10 March 2027, while retrograde, and returning to Leo on 26 April 2027. The two Moon passes inside that loop, together with the stretch open on 1 November, make three Cancer stretches: Chandra Mangal with a debilitated Mars, and with the Moon in its own sign. The single Scorpio stretch has Mars in its own sign, and the window closes with the pair in Capricorn, Mars exalted, from 29 December 2027 onwards.

What the Tradition Associates With It

In the planet table the Moon is karaka of the mother, the mind (manas) and the public, and Mars of younger siblings and engineering among other things; a reading of the yoga starts from those two lists and from the house the pair occupies.
