Gajakesari Yoga: Jupiter in a Kendra From the Moon

The Definition (गजकेसरी योग)

Gajakesari, “elephant and lion”, is the classical name for Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon. Count the Moon’s sign as the 1st house. If Jupiter is in that sign, or in the 4th, 7th or 10th from it, the condition is met. Unlike the Mahapurusha yogas it does not involve the lagna at all, so the birth time matters only when the Moon is close to changing sign.

Some texts add conditions on Jupiter’s own state, such as its not being debilitated or combust, and benefic aspect on it. This page sets out the bare condition, computed from the site’s sign, house and DE421 ingress tables, and says what those tables show about it. It does not say what the yoga does for anyone.

Your Moon Sign and the Jupiter Signs That Qualify

For any Moon sign there are exactly four Jupiter signs that complete the yoga: the Moon’s own sign and the signs three, six and nine places on. Find your Moon sign, then check where Jupiter was at birth.

The list repeats every third row because a sign’s kendras share its type: every movable Moon sign has the four movable signs as its list, and the same holds for the fixed and the dual signs. If you do not know your Moon sign, the Moon sign calculator works it out from your birth details.

About a Third of the Time

Four signs out of twelve is a third, and the measured figure agrees. Intersecting the Moon’s sign changes with Jupiter’s in the ingress table, the bare Gajakesari condition holds for 33.1% of the clock hours of 2026 and 32.9% of 2027. The Moon goes round the zodiac every month, so whatever sign Jupiter is in, the Moon passes through the four qualifying signs month after month.

That changes how the yoga is best read. As a bare sign condition it is common, which is why the extra conditions matter to those who apply them, and why finding it in a chart is the start of a reading and not the end of one. The same arithmetic explains the “Gajakesari today” lines in daily columns: for about a third of the time the transiting Moon is in a kendra from transiting Jupiter.

Jupiter’s Signs, 2026–2028

For a birth in these years, the Moon signs that qualify depend on which spell the birth falls in. Jupiter moves slowly and backtracks, so Cancer and Virgo each come round twice and Leo three times.

Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October 2026 and stays until 25 January 2027, so for births in that stretch the qualifying Moon signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. The whole sequence is explained on the Jupiter transit 2027 page.

One Added Condition the Table Can Answer

Of the extra conditions, one can be checked from the ingress table directly. The planet table gives Capricorn as Jupiter’s sign of debilitation, and in 2026–2028 Jupiter is never there: its signs are Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra. For a birth in these years, a debilitated Jupiter is not what stands between a chart and the stricter reading of the yoga. Combustion and aspects need the full chart.

What the Tradition Associates With It
