Shakata Yoga: The Moon 6th, 8th or 12th From Jupiter
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
The Cart Yoga (शकट योग)
Shakata, also spelt Sakata and written शकट in Hindi, is Sanskrit for a cart. In the Parashari tradition the name belongs to one Moon-Jupiter relation: take Jupiter’s sign as the 1st house and count on, and if the Moon falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the chart has Shakata. Those three are the houses the site’s house table classes as dusthanas, though here they are counted from Jupiter and not from the lagna.
Not every author counts it that way round. Some later writers state the rule as Jupiter in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon. That sounds like the same thing and is not. Counting in the other direction turns the 6th into the 8th and the 12th into the 2nd: with the Moon 6th, 8th or 12th from Jupiter, Jupiter is respectively 8th, 6th or 2nd from the Moon. The two versions agree on the 6/8 relation and disagree about the 2/12 one. This page computes both and leaves the choice to the reader’s own school.
Gajakesari’s Counterpart
Gajakesari asks for Jupiter in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the Moon. Under the Parashari count, Shakata puts Jupiter 2nd, 6th or 8th from the Moon, and none of those is a kendra, so one chart cannot carry both. Measured across the ingress table, Gajakesari holds for 33.1% of 2026, Shakata for 26.1%, and the remaining 40.9% of the year has neither.
About a Quarter of the Time
Three Moon signs out of twelve is a quarter, and the hour counts land close to it. Intersecting the Moon’s sign changes with Jupiter’s, the Parashari condition holds for 26.1% of the clock hours of 2026 and 25.5% of 2027. The reversed form gives 26.3% and 25.7%, within a point of it. Count a chart as Shakata if either form applies and the figure rises to 34.5% and 33.1%, about a third, because the two forms share only two of their three positions.
These are fractions of clock time in a calendar year: how long the sky shows the relation, not how many people are born with it. A Moon that changes sign every two days or so passes through the three qualifying signs every month wherever Jupiter is, which is why a bare Shakata is common, and why the birth time matters chiefly when the Moon is close to the edge of a sign.
Moon Sign by Moon Sign
Find your Moon sign in the first column. The second gives the Jupiter signs that complete the Parashari form, the third the Jupiter signs for the reversed form; two of the three are always the same. The last column belongs to the cancellation discussed below. If you do not know your Moon sign, the Moon sign calculator gives it from birth details.
| Moon sign | Jupiter in (Moon 6/8/12 from Jupiter) | Jupiter in (Jupiter 6/8/12 from Moon) | Lagnas with this Moon in a kendra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries (मेष) | Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio | Virgo, Scorpio, Pisces | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn |
| Taurus (वृषभ) | Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius | Aries, Libra, Sagittarius | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius |
| Gemini (मिथुन) | Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn | Taurus, Scorpio, Capricorn | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces |

Jupiter’s Signs, 2026–2028
For a birth in these three years, Jupiter’s sign at the time fixes which three Moon signs give the Parashari Shakata. Every Jupiter sign has exactly three.
| Jupiter in | Dates | Moon signs that give Shakata |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | From the start of the table to 2 June 2026 | Taurus, Scorpio, Capricorn |
| Cancer | 2 June 2026 to 31 October 2026 | Gemini, Sagittarius, Aquarius |
| Leo | 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027 | Cancer, Capricorn, Pisces |
| Cancer | 25 January 2027 to 26 June 2027 | Gemini, Sagittarius, Aquarius |
| Leo | 26 June 2027 to 26 November 2027 | Cancer, Capricorn, Pisces |
| Virgo | 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028 | Aries, Leo, Aquarius |
| Leo | 28 February 2028 to 24 July 2028 | Cancer, Capricorn, Pisces |
| Virgo | 24 July 2028 to 26 December 2028 | Aries, Leo, Aquarius |
| Libra | 26 December 2028 onwards | Taurus, Virgo, Pisces |
In Jupiter’s Leo spell of 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027, a Moon in Cancer, Capricorn or Pisces gives the Parashari form. Jupiter’s full sequence of sign changes is on the Jupiter transit 2027 page.
A Cancellation Some Authors Give
One exception, given by some authors, holds that Shakata does not stand when the Moon is in a kendra counted from the lagna. Astrologers who use the rule treat the lagna as overriding the Moon-Jupiter count; others do not apply it. Whichever sign the Moon occupies, the table above shows four lagnas that put it in a kendra, always the four signs of the Moon sign’s own type, so for a Moon in Cancer they are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Applying the exception needs the lagna, and so the birth time, not just the date.
What the Tradition Associates With It
The cart image aside, the reading runs through the two planets. The planet table lists Jupiter as karaka of teachers and gurus, higher learning and dharma, and the Moon of the mind (manas) and the public, and both entries name the 6th, 8th and 12th as their weakest houses from the lagna. Shakata borrows that set of houses but counts them from Jupiter, which is why astrologers who use it read it as a relation between the two significators and not as a placement of either. This page draws no outcome from it. Moon-centred yogas of other kinds are set out on the Kemadruma and Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara pages, and the whole family is compared on the kundli yoga list.
On the Search for a Remedy
This page gives no Shakata remedy. What it can state from the site’s tables is the condition, which signs meet it, and how much of the year the sky holds it; a practice for a reading belongs to the astrologer making the reading. In Hindi: शकट योग: गुरु से छठे, आठवें या बारहवें भाव में चन्द्रमा.
The Moon, Jupiter and Your Lagna
The Janam Kundli report lists your Moon sign, lagna and the sign and house of Jupiter and every other graha, with your dasha periods and their dates. Either form of Shakata, and its lagna exception, needs only those three placements. The report does not grade the yoga or forecast from it. A free chart is also available from the free kundli tool.
