Amala Yoga: A Benefic in the 10th From the Moon

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

The Rule (अमला योग)

Amala is Sanskrit for spotless or stainless. The yoga that carries the name is a single-house test: a natural benefic in the 10th sign, counted either from the lagna or from the Moon. Astrologers who apply it usually name Jupiter, Venus or Mercury as the benefics that count. A stricter reading, which takes the name literally, adds a second condition: no malefic may stand in that 10th beside the benefic. Both readings are computed below.

One detail is worth flagging before any numbers. The site’s planet table labels Jupiter and Venus “Benefic”, but gives Mercury as “Neutral — takes on its company”, not as a benefic. Lists of the yoga still put Mercury alongside Jupiter and Venus; the figures below do the same, with that caveat on record. On the other side, the table calls the Sun a “mild malefic”, Mars and Saturn “malefic”, and Rahu and Ketu “malefic (shadow)”; those five are what the strict reading keeps out.

From the Lagna or From the Moon

Counted from the lagna, the 10th is simply the 10th sign, counting the lagna’s own sign as the 1st: for an Aries lagna it is Capricorn. That version depends on the rising sign, so it needs an accurate birth time, and a sky table cannot supply one. Some authors also accept a waxing Moon in the 10th from the lagna, in line with the planet table’s “benefic when waxing” label for the Moon; this page has no phase test and leaves that variant uncomputed. What the sky alone does fix is the Moon’s version, and every figure here is counted from the Moon.

The counting runs both ways. A sign X is the 10th from the Moon exactly when the Moon is in the 4th sign from X, so a benefic in, say, Leo puts the yoga on a Scorpio Moon. The site’s house table gives the 10th as the Karma Bhava, glossed “visible work in the world”, and classes it as a kendra.

About a Fifth of the Year, Bare

Cutting the ingress tables at every sign change of the Moon and the eight other bodies, at least one of the three benefics sits in the 10th from the Moon for 20.1% of the clock time of 2026 and 22.4% of 2027. Add the strict condition and the figures fall to 11.0% and 9.2%. These are fractions of time in the sky, not of people or of births.

Reading20262027
Bare: Jupiter, Venus or Mercury in the 10th from the Moon20.1%22.4%
Strict: bare, and none of the five malefics in that 10th11.0%9.2%
Strict as a share of the bare time54.9%41.1%

So the strict test keeps a little over half of the bare time in 2026 and about two parts in five in 2027. The malefic found most often beside a benefic in that sign is the Sun: present in 26.0% of the bare time in 2026 and 28.9% in 2027. That follows from the tables too, since the Sun shares a sign with Mercury or Venus for 60.6% of 2026 and 65.5% of 2027. In 2027 Ketu comes second, at 19.8%, ahead of Mars at 14.6%.

Which Benefic Supplies It

Split the bare time by which benefic is present and the three come out close. Jupiter is in the 10th from the Moon for 42.8% of the bare time in 2026 and 40.6% in 2027, the largest share both years; Venus has 40.3% and 37.2%, Mercury 39.3% and 36.7%. The rows add to more than a hundred because two or three benefics can share the sign: two or more are there together for 19.1% of the bare time in 2026 and 14.4% in 2027.

Which Moon Signs Carry It, November 2026 to January 2027

Over a few weeks the answer turns only on the Moon’s sign, because the other eight bodies move far more slowly. Each row is a stretch in which none of those eight changes sign. The last two columns list the Moon signs whose 10th holds a benefic, first on the bare reading and then on the strict one. Rows marked soft begin or end at a Rahu-Ketu sign change, which the table gives on the mean node and so may be off by about a day.

Every row has 2 or 3 Moon signs on the bare reading and at most 2 on the strict one; only the opening stretch has none at all on the strict test. Two cases show how the strict test bites. While Jupiter is in Leo, up to 25 January 2027, a Scorpio Moon meets the bare rule in every row and the strict one in none, because Leo also holds Ketu at the start of the window and Mars by the end. A Capricorn Moon, whose 10th is Libra, has Venus and Mercury there when the window opens and meets the bare rule from the first row, but passes the strict test only from 16 November 2026, when the Sun leaves Libra.

To read your own row you need your Moon sign; the Moon sign calculator gives it from a birth date, time and place.

What the Name Is Connected With

The classical texts connect the name with an unstained reputation. This page draws no outcome from the yoga on either reading: a configuration present for about a fifth of the year on the bare test, and roughly a tenth on the strict one, sorts few charts on its own, and any reading of it sits inside the whole chart and whatever rules the reader’s astrologer follows.

Jupiter’s place in the kendras from the Moon, which includes the 10th, is measured on the Gajakesari yoga page. The grahas in the signs either side of the Moon are the subject of Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara, and Venus with Mercury in one sign is Lakshmi Narayan yoga. Shares for every yoga in this series sit side by side on the list of kundli yogas and how common they are. In Hindi: अमला योग: चन्द्रमा से दसवें भाव में शुभ ग्रह.

The 10th From Your Moon and Lagna

The Janam Kundli report lists your Moon sign, your lagna and the sign of every graha, so both versions of the Amala test can be read straight off it. Grading the yoga, and forecasting from it, are outside what the report does.
