Hamsa Yoga: Jupiter in a Kendra, for Each Lagna

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

What Has to Be True (हंस योग)

Hamsa, the swan, is the Jupiter yoga among Parashara’s five Pancha Mahapurusha combinations. At birth Jupiter must be in Sagittarius or Pisces, the two signs it rules, or in Cancer, its exaltation sign, and the sign it is in must be a kendra from the lagna. A Jupiter in Pisces in the 9th house is in its own sign and in a trikona, but it is not Hamsa. The angle is part of the definition.

Since the definition is a sign and a house, the tables below are computed from the site’s planet, sign and house data, and the dates from the DE421 ingress table. They say which charts contain the yoga. They say nothing about how a life with it will go.

Fixed-Sign Lagnas Are Left Out

Kendras keep a lagna’s type: the angles of a movable sign are all movable, those of a fixed sign all fixed, those of a dual sign all dual. Jupiter’s exaltation sign, Cancer, is movable, and both of its own signs are dual. None is fixed. So the dual lagnas (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) have two ways to Hamsa, the movable lagnas (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) have one, through an exalted Jupiter in Cancer, and the fixed lagnas (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) have none.

The Kendra-Lordship Question for Gemini and Virgo

For Gemini and Virgo ascendants Jupiter rules two kendras and no trikona: the 7th and 10th for the first, the 4th and 7th for the second. In Parashara’s scheme of lordships a natural benefic that owns angles loses some of its benefic quality, the rule known as kendradhipati dosha, and Jupiter is the greatest benefic in the planet table. These two lagnas are where that rule bears on Jupiter most directly. Astrologers differ on how far the dignity of a Hamsa Jupiter outweighs the doctrine in those two charts. The table can show the conflict; it cannot settle it.

Two further rows stand out. For Libra and Capricorn Jupiter rules neither a kendra nor a trikona (3rd and 6th, and 3rd and 12th), so Hamsa there is an exalted Jupiter in an angle that rules only the 3rd, 6th or 12th. For Sagittarius and Pisces it is the lagna lord. And the planet table gives Jupiter its digbala, directional strength, in the 1st house, which is one Hamsa option for each of Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces.

Only Cancer, Only Twice, From 2026 to 2028

Jupiter takes about one year per sign, so its windows are long and rare. In the 2026–2028 ingress table it never reaches Sagittarius or Pisces; the only qualifying sign it occupies is Cancer, in two spells:

  • 2 June 2026 to 31 October 2026, 151 days. This window closes on 31 October 2026, when Jupiter moves on into Leo.
  • 25 January 2027 to 26 June 2027, 152 days. Jupiter re-enters Cancer moving backwards, 86 days after leaving it, and finally leaves on the second date.

That is 303 days in three years. Because Cancer is a movable sign, a birth inside either window has Hamsa only with a movable sign rising: Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. After 26 June 2027 the table holds no further Hamsa window at all. The back-and-forth itself is laid out on the Jupiter transit 2027 and Jupiter in Leo 2026 pages.

What the Texts Attach to It

The planet table makes Jupiter the karaka of children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma and wealth, among other significations, and Hamsa is read through those, given a Jupiter with full dignity in an angle. The classical lakshana chapters on the five Mahapurusha natives are mostly about the body; they are not reproduced here, and no claim is made about what the yoga brings. In a reading it is weighed with the Jupiter mahadasha and antardasha, aspects on Jupiter and the planets in its sign.

The other four Mahapurusha yogas are compared on the Pancha Mahapurusha yoga page, and Jupiter’s other famous yoga, with the Moon, has its own page: Gajakesari yoga. What the tradition says of Jupiter in particular houses is in Jupiter in the 1st house and Jupiter in the 7th house.

Running the Test

With a fixed sign rising the answer is no. With any other lagna, look up the row and compare it with Jupiter’s sign at birth. The ascendant calculator gives the lagna; a birth time that is uncertain by more than an hour may give the wrong one. In Hindi: हंस योग: केन्द्र में गुरु, बारह लग्नों की तालिका.

Where Is Jupiter in Your Chart?

The Janam Kundli report gives your lagna, the sign and house of Jupiter and the other grahas, and your dasha periods with their dates, from your birth details: the two facts the Hamsa test needs, and the timeline a reading would set them against. It does not grade the yoga or forecast from it.
