Ruchaka Yoga: Mars in a Kendra, for Each Lagna
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Mars, Three Signs and Four Angles (रुचक योग)
Ruchaka is the Mars yoga among the five that Parashara calls the Pancha Mahapurusha. Two things must both be true in the birth chart. Mars occupies one of its own signs, Aries or Scorpio, or its exaltation sign, Capricorn. And that sign is a kendra from the lagna: the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house. Mars in Capricorn in the 5th house is exalted, but it is not Ruchaka; Mars in the 10th in Leo sits in a kendra, but not in one of its signs.
That makes Ruchaka something the site can compute instead of describe. The sign list below comes from the planet table, the angular houses from the house table, and the dates from the DE421 ingress table. None of it is a prediction about anybody.
Why Four Lagnas Can Never Have It
The four kendras from any sign are always signs of the same type as the lagna: movable (chara), fixed (sthira) or dual (dvisvabhava). Aries and Capricorn are movable, and Scorpio is fixed. So a movable lagna (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) has two ways to form Ruchaka, a fixed lagna (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) has one, through Scorpio, and a dual lagna (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) has none at all. For those last four ascendants no position of Mars produces the yoga.
| Lagna | Ruchaka if Mars is in | Mars rules |
|---|---|---|
| Aries (मेष) | Aries (1st) or Capricorn (10th) | 1st and 8th |
| Taurus (वृषभ) | Scorpio (7th) | 7th and 12th |
| Gemini (मिथुन) | not possible | 6th and 11th |
| Cancer (कर्क) | Aries (10th) or Capricorn (7th) | 5th and 10th |
| Leo (सिंह) | Scorpio (4th) | 4th and 9th |
| Virgo (कन्या) | not possible | 3rd and 8th |
| Libra (तुला) | Aries (7th) or Capricorn (4th) | 2nd and 7th |
| Scorpio (वृश्चिक) | Scorpio (1st) | 1st and 6th |
| Sagittarius (धनु) | not possible | 5th and 12th |
| Capricorn (मकर) | Aries (4th) or Capricorn (1st) | 4th and 11th |
| Aquarius (कुम्भ) | Scorpio (10th) | 3rd and 10th |
| Pisces (मीन) | not possible | 2nd and 9th |
Ruchaka and Mangal Dosha in One Chart
The site’s planet table defines Mangal dosha by house: Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. Three of the four Ruchaka houses, the 1st, 4th and 7th, are on that list, so 9 of the 12 placements in the table are ones a house-only check would mark as Manglik. Only the 10th-house version escapes it. The tradition resolves the clash through its cancellation rules, and the site’s own Mangal dosha checker counts Mars in its own sign or its exaltation sign as one of them. A house-only label on a Ruchaka chart therefore leaves out the very condition that made it Ruchaka. The fuller treatment is in the Manglik dosh guide.
Lordship and Directional Strength
For Cancer and Leo ascendants Mars rules a kendra and a trikona together, which makes it the yogakaraka in the tradition’s terms, so in those two charts Ruchaka is the yogakaraka itself in one of its signs. For Aries and Scorpio it is the lagna lord. The planet table also gives Mars its digbala, directional strength, in the 10th house, and that is the Ruchaka house for one option each in Aries, Cancer and Aquarius. These are separate layers of the reading and the table keeps them apart. It does not add them up into a score.
The sign placements on their own are described on Mars in Aries, Mars in Scorpio and Mars in Capricorn.
Mars in Its Signs, 2026 to 2028
Mars moves through a sign in about eight weeks, so its qualifying windows are short and far apart. Across the three years of the ingress table they add up to about two hundred days (198 by the dates below). The longest gap runs from 20 June 2026 to 8 October 2027, 475 days in which Mars is in none of its three signs and no birth anywhere can have Ruchaka.
| Mars in | From | Until | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capricorn | 16 January 2026 | 23 February 2026 | 38 |
| Aries | 11 May 2026 | 20 June 2026 | 40 |
| Scorpio | 8 October 2027 | 18 November 2027 | 41 |
| Capricorn | 27 December 2027 | 3 February 2028 | 38 |
| Aries | 20 April 2028 | 31 May 2028 | 41 |
Inside a window the lagna still decides. When Mars is in Scorpio, only the four fixed signs rising give Ruchaka; when it is in Aries or Capricorn, only the four movable signs do. The whole Mars sequence for the coming year is on the Mars transit 2027 page.
How the Tradition Reads It
The planet table names Mars the karaka of younger siblings, land and property, engineering and the armed forces, and Ruchaka is read through those significations, with the difference that the Mars in question has full dignity and an angular seat. The classical chapters on the five Mahapurusha types describe the native’s body at length; this page leaves those descriptions out, and it attaches no outcome to the yoga. In the texts a yoga is one input to a chart, weighed with the Mars mahadasha and antardasha, the aspects falling on Mars, and whatever else occupies its sign.
The four sibling yogas are compared on the Pancha Mahapurusha yoga page. What the tradition attaches to Mars in particular houses is covered in Mars in the 10th house and Mars in the 1st house.
Checking a Chart
Find the lagna first. If it is a dual sign, the answer is no and nothing else needs checking. Otherwise look up the lagna in the table, then check the sign Mars occupied at birth. The ascendant calculator gives the lagna from date, time and place; an uncertain birth time can move it into the next sign. In Hindi: रुचक योग: केन्द्र में मंगल, हर लग्न के लिए.
Your Lagna and Your Mars
The Janam Kundli report calculates your lagna, the sign and house of Mars and every other graha, and your dasha sequence with dates, from your birth details. With it you can run the Ruchaka test yourself. It does not rate the yoga or make a forecast from it.
