Bhadra Yoga: Mercury in Gemini or Virgo in a Kendra
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Two Signs, Not Three (भद्र योग)
Bhadra is Mercury’s place in the Pancha Mahapurusha set, and it is the odd one out. The other four grahas each have three qualifying signs, two of their own and one of exaltation. Mercury has two, because the planet table gives Virgo as both its own sign and its exaltation sign, beside Gemini, its other own sign. The rule is otherwise the same: Mercury in Gemini or Virgo at birth, and that sign a kendra, the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the lagna.
Every row and date below is computed from the site’s planet, sign and house tables and the DE421 ingress table. The page reports where the yoga can occur and when; it does not say what it will do.
Only the Dual Lagnas
Gemini and Virgo are both dual (dvisvabhava) signs, and the four kendras of any sign share its type. So Bhadra is confined to the four dual lagnas, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, and each of those has two ways to it. For the eight movable and fixed lagnas no position of Mercury satisfies the rule.
| Lagna | Mercury in Gemini is the | Mercury in Virgo is the | Mercury rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini (मिथुन) | 1st | 4th | 1st and 4th |
| Virgo (कन्या) | 10th | 1st | 1st and 10th |
| Sagittarius (धनु) | 7th | 10th | 7th and 10th |
| Pisces (मीन) | 4th | 7th | 4th and 7th |
Mercury Rules Angles in All Four
The last column has a pattern no other Mahapurusha table shares. In every chart that can hold Bhadra, both of Mercury’s houses are kendras. For Gemini and Virgo one of them is the lagna, so Mercury is the chart’s ruler. For Sagittarius and Pisces Mercury owns two angles and no trikona, which brings in Parashara’s rule that a natural benefic owning kendras loses some of its benefic quality (kendradhipati dosha). The planet table classes Mercury as neutral, taking the character of what it sits with, and astrologers differ on whether the rule applies to it with full force. That disagreement belongs to the reading, not to the yoga’s definition.
Mercury’s digbala, its directional strength, is the 1st house in the planet table. For Gemini and Virgo lagnas the 1st-house Bhadra puts Mercury in its own sign, on the ascendant, with directional strength. The sign placements are described on Mercury in Gemini and Mercury in Virgo.
Mercury in Gemini and Virgo, 2026 to 2028
Mercury is fast, but it retrogrades three times a year, and that makes its stays uneven. The ingress table gives 8 spells in the two signs across three years, 260 days in all. The two longest, in Gemini 2027 and Virgo 2028, each run past sixty days because both stations of a retrograde fall inside them.
| Mercury in | From | Until | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 29 May 2026 | 22 June 2026 | 24 |
| Gemini (re-entered moving backwards) | 7 July 2026 | 5 August 2026 | 29 |
| Virgo | 7 September 2026 | 26 September 2026 | 19 |
| Gemini | 23 May 2027 | 30 July 2027 | 68 |
| Virgo | 31 August 2027 | 21 September 2027 | 21 |
| Virgo (re-entered moving backwards) | 21 October 2027 | 5 November 2027 | 15 |
| Gemini | 5 July 2028 | 21 July 2028 | 16 |
| Virgo | 23 August 2028 | 30 October 2028 | 68 |
Inside a window only a dual sign rising completes the yoga, so even then it is present for part of each day and not the rest. The full Mercury calendar for the coming year is on the Mercury transit 2027 page, and the retrogrades on the retrograde hub.
Bhadra Next to the Sun
The planet table notes that Mercury is never far from the Sun. One result shows up in the hour counts: of the time Mercury spends in Gemini or Virgo across the three years, the Sun is in the same sign for about 39% of it. In those charts Bhadra and Budhaditya yoga, the Sun and Mercury in one sign, come together. Combustion, Mercury lying too close to the Sun, is a separate test that a reading applies to such a Mercury. This page gives no combustion boundary, and whether a particular Mercury is combust is a question for the full chart.
What the Tradition Reads Into It
The planet table makes Mercury the karaka of speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics and students, and readings of Bhadra lean on those significations for a Mercury in full dignity in an angle. The classical chapters that describe the five Mahapurusha natives deal mostly with the body, and this page leaves them out. It also leaves out any claim about results: the yoga is weighed alongside the Mercury mahadasha and antardasha and the planets that share or aspect Mercury’s sign.
The full set of five is compared on the Pancha Mahapurusha yoga page. The tradition’s reading of Mercury’s own period is in Mercury mahadasha, and of Mercury in the 10th in Mercury in the 10th house.
Is It in Your Chart?
Look at the lagna first. If it is not Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces, the answer is no. If it is, the yoga is there when Mercury was in Gemini or Virgo at birth. The ascendant calculator finds the lagna, and an uncertain birth time can change it. In Hindi: भद्र योग: केन्द्र में मिथुन या कन्या राशि का बुध.
Mercury, Lagna and Dasha in One Place
The Janam Kundli report works out your lagna, Mercury’s sign and house with every other graha’s, and your dasha sequence with dates, from your date, time and place of birth. That is enough to check the Bhadra condition. The report does not rate the yoga or make predictions from it.
