Budhaditya Yoga: How Often the Sun and Mercury Share a Sign
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Budha and Aditya Together (बुधादित्य योग)
Budhaditya joins the names of Mercury (Budha) and the Sun (Aditya), and in its simplest form it means only that the two occupy the same sign at birth. With whole-sign houses that also puts them in the same house. Some astrologers ask for more, a close conjunction by degree, or a Mercury that is not combust, but every version starts from the shared sign, and that part can be measured.
The figures below come from the site’s DE421 ingress table, intersecting the Sun’s sign changes with Mercury’s on IST instants. They describe the sky. They do not say what the yoga does for anyone born under it.
About Half of Every Year
The planet table notes that Mercury is never far from the Sun, and the hour counts show what follows. The Sun and Mercury are in the same sign for 55% of 2026 and 49% of 2027. As a bare condition, then, Budhaditya is in the sky for about half of each year, whatever the lagna, and a chart cast for any moment of it has about an even chance of showing the yoga. That frequency is the first thing to know about it. Finding the yoga in a chart says little until the sign, the house, the lordships and the stricter conditions have been looked at.
Every Stretch of 2027
In 2027 the pair shares a sign in 15 separate stretches and meets in all twelve signs at least once. The longest is in Gemini, about 31 days, and the shortest in Aquarius, about 3 days. Libra and Aquarius each appear twice, because Mercury’s retrograde loops take it out of the Sun’s sign and back, and Sagittarius appears at both ends of the year. Dates are by the day, from the entry of the second planet to the exit of the first.
| Shared sign | From | Until | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sagittarius (धनु) | already together on 1 January | 10 January | 9 days in 2027 |
| Capricorn (मकर) | 14 January | 28 January | 13 days |
| Aquarius (कुम्भ) | 13 February | 24 February | 11 days |
| Aquarius (कुम्भ) | 12 March | 15 March | 3 days |
| Pisces (मीन) | 5 April | 14 April | 9 days |
| Aries (मेष) | 22 April | 6 May | 14 days |
| Taurus (वृषभ) | 15 May | 23 May | 8 days |
| Gemini (मिथुन) | 15 June | 17 July | 31 days |
| Cancer (कर्क) | 30 July | 14 August | 15 days |
| Leo (सिंह) | 17 August | 31 August | 13 days |
| Virgo (कन्या) | 17 September | 21 September | 4 days |
| Libra (तुला) | 18 October | 21 October | 3 days |
| Libra (तुला) | 5 November | 17 November | 11 days |
| Scorpio (वृश्चिक) | 26 November | 15 December | 19 days |
| Sagittarius (धनु) | 16 December | still together on 31 December | 15 days in 2027 |
The Sun’s own dates for the year are on the Sun transit 2027 page and Mercury’s on Mercury transit 2027.
What the Lagna Changes
The yoga is not the same thing in every chart, because the Sun and Mercury rule different houses for each lagna. The Sun always rules one house and Mercury two, and one of Mercury’s houses always sits next to the Sun’s, since Virgo, a Mercury sign, directly follows Leo, the Sun’s. For Gemini, Leo and Virgo one of the pair is the lagna lord. For Aries and Sagittarius the Sun rules a trikona and no kendra. Where the pair sits matters too: the shared sign falls in a different house for each lagna, and a reading weighs that house as well.
| Lagna | The Sun rules | Mercury rules |
|---|---|---|
| Aries (मेष) | 5th | 3rd and 6th |
| Taurus (वृषभ) | 4th | 2nd and 5th |
| Gemini (मिथुन) | 3rd | 1st and 4th |
| Cancer (कर्क) | 2nd | 3rd and 12th |
| Leo (सिंह) | 1st | 2nd and 11th |
| Virgo (कन्या) | 12th | 1st and 10th |
| Libra (तुला) | 11th | 9th and 12th |
| Scorpio (वृश्चिक) | 10th | 8th and 11th |
| Sagittarius (धनु) | 9th | 7th and 10th |
| Capricorn (मकर) | 8th | 6th and 9th |
| Aquarius (कुम्भ) | 7th | 5th and 8th |
| Pisces (मीन) | 6th | 4th and 7th |
Combustion, and Where the Page Stops
Because Mercury so often shares the Sun’s sign, it is also often combust, too close to the Sun, and readings of Budhaditya often turn on that question. The planet table records combustion orbs for each graha, but this site does not publish a combustion boundary as a date or a degree, and so this page does not say which stretches above contain a combust Mercury. That needs the degrees of both planets in the birth chart.
How the Tradition Reads It
Older posts on this site place Budhaditya among career and wealth combinations, and the tradition reads it through what the two planets signify: the Sun as karaka of government, authority and administration, and Mercury of speech, writing, trade and accounts. This page draws no outcome from it. When Mercury is also in Gemini or Virgo in a kendra, the same chart has Bhadra yoga; the other sign-and-house yogas are on the Pancha Mahapurusha and Gajakesari pages. For Mercury’s own period see Mercury mahadasha, and for the Sun’s, Sun mahadasha. In Hindi: बुधादित्य योग: सूर्य और बुध एक राशि में.
The Sun and Mercury in Your Own Chart
The Janam Kundli report gives the sign and house of the Sun, Mercury and the other grahas, your lagna, and your dasha periods with their dates, from your birth details. That shows whether the pair shares a sign and which house it is. The report does not grade the yoga or forecast from it.
