Mercury Transit 2027: Every Budh Gochar Date

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Sixteen Sign Entries in 2027 (बुध गोचर)

Mercury opens 2027 in Sagittarius, the sign it enters on 22 December 2026; the Mercury in Sagittarius 2026 page covers that crossing. From there the DE421 ingress table lists sixteen sign entries dated 2027, the first into Capricorn on 10 January 2027 and the last into Sagittarius on 15 December 2027. Those sixteen entries touch all twelve rashis, but they are not one entry per sign: Capricorn, Aquarius, Virgo and Libra are each entered twice, and two of the entries are made while Mercury is moving backwards.

Each row below is the moment Mercury’s sidereal longitude crosses into a new sign, in IST, with the day count running to the next row. The last 2027 row is closed by the first row of the next year, Mercury’s entry into Capricorn on 2 January 2028.

Every one of these rows carries a clock minute because every one of them moves faster than 0.1° a day, the floor below which the site prints a date only. The minute is still softer at some rows than others. The slowest crossing of the year is the 12 March return to Aquarius, 9 days after the direct station, at 0.72° a day: there one arcminute of longitude is worth about 33 minutes of clock. The fastest is the 6 May entry into Taurus, at 2.10° a day, where an arcminute is about 11 minutes. An almanac working with an ayanamsa a little different from the Lahiri value used here will move each minute by a multiple of those figures, so a gap of a few minutes against another published list is expected rather than a contradiction. The table’s instants are truncated to the minute, not rounded.

Why Four Signs Appear Twice

Both doubled pairs come from a retrograde that begins shortly after Mercury has crossed a boundary. Mercury enters Aquarius on 28 January 2027, stations retrograde there on 9 February 2027, and moving backwards re-enters Capricorn on 24 February 2027; so the January entry into Aquarius is the first half of a two-stage transit, not a settled one. Mercury turns direct in Capricorn on 3 March 2027 and crosses into Aquarius again on 12 March 2027. That gives Capricorn two spells (18 and 16 days) and Aquarius two (27 and 24 days). The Capricorn crossing that starts the year has its own page, Mercury in Capricorn 2027.

The autumn repeats the shape one sign pair along. Mercury enters Libra on 21 September 2027 and stations retrograde inside it on 7 October 2027; the 21 September 2027 entry is then undone when Mercury backs into Virgo on 21 October 2027. It turns direct in Virgo on 28 October 2027 and enters Libra a second time on 5 November 2027. Virgo gets spells of 21 and 15 days, and Libra spells of 30 and 21.

Two further cases look like repeats and are not. The June retrograde opens and closes inside Gemini, so it crosses no boundary and adds no row. And Sagittarius is occupied at both edges of the year, carried into January from the 22 December 2026 entry and again from 15 December 2027 onwards, but only the second of those is a 2027 entry: the doubling there is the calendar wrapping round, not a retrograde.

The Three Retrogrades, by Date

The site’s retrograde table gives Mercury three retrograde windows starting in 2027, and the six stations that open and close them are all the Mercury stations dated 2027. Stations are given here as dates only:

  • 9 February to 3 March: 22 days, stationing retrograde in Aquarius and direct in Capricorn, so the window crosses back over a sign boundary.
  • 10 June to 5 July: 24 days, stationing retrograde in Gemini and direct in Gemini, without leaving the sign.
  • 7 October to 28 October: 21 days, stationing retrograde in Libra and direct in Virgo, so the window crosses back over a sign boundary.

The station degrees are on the Mercury retrograde 2027 page. This page uses the windows only to explain the table above.

Longest and Shortest Stays

Of the sixteen stays that begin in 2027, the longest is Gemini: 68 days, from 23 May 2027 to 30 July 2027, and by the table’s minutes the entry into Gemini and the entry into Cancer fall at the same clock time, 18:28. It is long because the whole June retrograde happens inside it: Mercury moves forward into the sign, stops, moves back, stops again, and crosses part of the sign a third time before moving on into Cancer. The shortest is Aries, 14 days from 22 April 2027, in a quiet stretch of the year: the nearest station to either of its boundaries is 35 days away.

The site’s pace table gives Mercury roughly 3 weeks to 2 months per sign and flags that figure as a mean and nothing more, on the ground, as its notes put it, that Mercury never leaves the Sun’s neighbourhood. The 2027 rows show how loose a mean it is. Ten of the sixteen stays are shorter than three weeks, Aries among them, and only Gemini runs past two months. Taking the doubled signs together rather than spell by spell, Mercury spends 51 days of the year in Aquarius and 51 in Libra.

Mercury Beside the Sun, Month by Month

The neighbourhood can be read straight off the monthly position table, which records each graha’s longitude at midnight IST on the first of the month. Taking only the sign each longitude falls in:

Position rowMercury inSun inMercury is in
1 January 2027SagittariusSagittariussame sign

1 March 2027CapricornAquariusthe sign before the Sun’s

1 October 2027LibraVirgothe sign after the Sun’s
1 November 2027VirgoLibrathe sign before the Sun’s

On all twelve rows Mercury is either in the Sun’s sign or in one of the two signs beside it: the same sign on five rows (January, May, July, August and December), the sign after the Sun’s on four, and the sign before it on three (March, April and November). This page compares signs only and reads nothing further into the pairing.

Virgo, Gemini and Pisces in the Dignity Table

The site’s planet table lists Gemini and Virgo as Mercury’s own signs, names Virgo as its sign of exaltation as well, and gives Pisces as its sign of debilitation. Read against the 2027 rows, that places Mercury:

  • In Virgo, own sign and exaltation sign: 31 August to 21 September (21 days) and 21 October to 5 November (15 days), the second spell entered moving backwards. See Mercury in Virgo.
  • In Gemini, own sign: 23 May to 30 July (68 days), the year’s longest stay. See Mercury in Gemini.
  • In Pisces, sign of debilitation: 5 April to 22 April (17 days). See Mercury in Pisces.

Those are placements recorded by the dignity scheme, not readings. The table says where Mercury stands in the classical ranking of signs; what that comes to in a particular chart depends on the houses Mercury rules and occupies there, which no year list can supply. The Mercury reference page gathers the rest of what the site’s tables hold about Budh.

Which Dates to Hold Loosely

A sign change close to midnight is the one case where a small difference between almanacs changes the date and not just the minute. Measured in arcminutes of Mercury’s own motion at each crossing, no 2027 row comes within one arcminute of midnight. Two come within three, both just after midnight: the 26 November entry into Scorpio, at 00:25, sits 1.6 arcminutes after it, and the 10 January entry into Capricorn, at 00:34, sits 2.3. A list whose ayanamsa differs from the one used here by a couple of arcminutes, in the direction that brings the crossing earlier, could print either of those on the previous date. Every other row in the table is more than seven arcminutes clear of midnight, so its date should agree across lists that use a Lahiri-type ayanamsa even where the minute does not.

Reading the List Against Your Own Chart

The dates are the same for everybody. Which house each sign is from your Moon sign, and so which field of life the classical gochara count attaches to each row, is not; the Moon sign calculator works out the starting point from your birth details. This page gives no sign-by-sign forecast. What the tradition associates with a Mercury period in the dasha scheme is set out in Mercury Mahadasha, and the Wednesday observances and other practices kept for Budh are collected in remedies for a weak Mercury.

The same year is laid out for the other grahas on Sun transit 2027, Venus transit 2027, Mars transit 2027 and Saturn transit 2027.

Where Mercury Sits in Your Birth Chart

A year list tells you where Mercury is on a date; it cannot tell you which houses Mercury rules for you. The Janam Kundli report computes your lagna, Moon sign, each graha’s sign and house, and your dasha periods with dates, from your date, time and place of birth. It does not interpret these transits; it gives you the chart an interpretation would start from.
