Mercury in Capricorn 2027: Budh Gochar Makar Rashi Dates

Two Visits to Makara (मकर राशि में बुध)

Mercury comes out of Sagittarius and into Capricorn at 00:34 IST on 10 January 2027, a little over half an hour into the day. It crosses the whole sign forwards and moves on into Aquarius on 28 January 2027, but that Aquarius entry does not hold: Mercury stations retrograde in Aquarius on 9 February 2027, and moving backwards it re-enters Capricorn on 24 February 2027. It turns direct inside Capricorn on 3 March 2027 and takes the Aquarius boundary forwards a second time on 12 March 2027. So the answer to “when is Budh in Makar?” is two separate stretches with a month in Aquarius between them.

• First spell, forwards: 10 January to 28 January, 18 days.
• In Aquarius between the spells: 28 January to 24 February, 27 days.
• Second spell, backwards then forwards: 24 February to 12 March 2027, 16 days.

The site’s pace table gives Mercury roughly 3 weeks to 2 months in a sign. Neither spell reaches the bottom of that range on its own; together they come to 34 days, and the Aquarius stretch between them is longer than either. For comparison, the table’s previous Capricorn passage, from 17 January 2026 to 3 February, was a single forward spell of 17 days, now in the past. The next one, from 2 January 2028, runs 67 days because that year’s retrograde falls entirely inside Capricorn. The same sign, three years running, three different shapes.

An Entry 34 Minutes After Midnight

The site prints a clock minute only for a sign change faster than 0.1° a day, and all four Mercury crossings on this page clear that floor. The January entry is the one whose date is fragile. Mercury is moving 1.66° a day as it crosses, so one arcminute of longitude corresponds to about 14 minutes of clock. The crossing at 00:34 is therefore between two and three arcminutes’ worth of motion after midnight. An almanac using an ayanamsa that differs from the Lahiri value used here by that much (a slightly smaller ayanamsa moves every sidereal crossing earlier) would date the entry to 9 January late in the evening and be doing its arithmetic correctly. Treat 10 January as the table’s date, not as the only date in print.

The other three crossings are not in that position. 28 January at 03:30 (about 16 minutes per arcminute), 24 February at 04:46 (about 28 minutes per arcminute) and 12 March at 05:00 (about 33 minutes per arcminute) each sit at least 9 arcminutes’ worth of motion from a midnight, so their dates are steadier than their minutes. The February and March rates are slower because both crossings fall within 9 days of the direct station, so each arcminute stretches over more clock time. The two stations and every nakshatra crossing carry a date only.

The Loop Back From Aquarius

The site’s retrograde table has this window running from 9 February 2027 to 3 March 2027, 22 days, across Aquarius and Capricorn. Mercury stops at about 11.8° of Aquarius and turns back; it recrosses the boundary on 24 February at 0.87° a day and comes to rest at about 26.7° of Capricorn on 3 March. The second spell therefore covers only the last 3.3 degrees of the sign, twice: backwards for 7 days, then forwards for 9 days. The monthly position row for 1 March 2027 puts Mercury at 27.1° of Capricorn, just short of its turning point. Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Dhanishta (नक्षत्र)

Mercury arrives in Capricorn already inside Uttara Ashadha, which it entered on 8 January 2027 while still in Sagittarius; that nakshatra runs across the line between Sagittarius and Capricorn. It reaches Shravana, which lies wholly in Capricorn, on 16 January 2027; the table places that crossing within minutes of midnight, so some almanacs will give the day before. Dhanishta follows on 23 January 2027. Dhanishta straddles Capricorn and Aquarius, so Mercury is still in it when it first crosses into Aquarius, and it moves on to Shatabhisha on 2 February 2027.

The retrograde undoes the last of that. Mercury backs out of Shatabhisha into Dhanishta on 17 February 2027, a week before it re-enters Capricorn, and because its direct station falls past the point where Dhanishta begins, the entire second spell is spent in Dhanishta: the nakshatra table records no crossing at all between 24 February and 12 March. Shravana and Uttara Ashadha are not revisited. Shatabhisha comes round again on 19 March 2027, after Mercury is back in Aquarius. The nakshatra table gives the lords as Sun for Uttara Ashadha, the Moon for Shravana, Mars for Dhanishta and Rahu for Shatabhisha. Dates only; no pada is named.

Saturn’s Sign, With the Sun and Then Venus Alongside

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn in the sign table. The planet table lists Gemini and Virgo as Mercury’s own signs, Virgo as its exaltation and Pisces as its debilitation, so on that table Capricorn is none of these: the placement is neutral. The friendship rows read differently in the two directions. Mercury’s row puts Saturn among its neutrals, while Saturn’s own row counts Mercury as a friend. At sign level, the same sign table makes Capricorn the exaltation sign of Mars and the debilitation sign of Jupiter; this page does not quote the degrees attached to those entries. What differs between the two spells is the company. During the first, the Sun enters Capricorn on 14 January 2027, the ingress almanacs name Makara Sankranti, and the two share the sign for 14 days; this page does not say which day the festival is kept, and the Makar Sankranti 2027 page takes that up. The Sun has moved on into Aquarius by 13 February, before Mercury comes back. The second spell has a different neighbour, and the coincidence is in the rows themselves: Venus enters Capricorn at 15:11 on 24 February 2027, the same calendar day Mercury backs into it, a little over 10 hours later. At Venus’s speed of 1.18° a day, one arcminute is about 20 minutes of clock. Venus is still in Capricorn when Mercury leaves, so from that day the two share the sign for the rest of the second spell, 16 days by the calendar, Mercury having come in backwards at the far end of the sign and Venus forwards at the near end. Mercury’s row lists both the Sun and Venus as friends; the Sun’s row lists Mercury as neutral, and Venus’s lists it as a friend. These are relationships between table rows, and the page draws no forecast from them.

In the classical scheme recorded in the planet table, Mercury casts one aspect, the 7th, and from Capricorn it falls on Cancer (Karka), a sign of the Moon. Jupiter, retrograde, backs into Cancer on 25 January 2027, 3 days before Mercury first crosses into Aquarius, and is still there after Mercury’s second spell; Mars, also retrograde, backs into Cancer on 10 March 2027, 2 days before Mercury reaches Aquarius again.

Counting Capricorn From Your Moon Sign (चंद्र राशि से भाव)

Gochara counts a transit from the janma rashi, the Moon’s sign at birth, taken as the 1st house. Both spells are in the same sign, so one table serves for each: the house Capricorn is from every Moon sign, that house’s name in the site’s house tables, and the house the 7th aspect reaches. A house page lists the subjects the tradition assigns to that house; the table does not say what Mercury’s passage does there, and none of it is a forecast.
