Wednesday Fasting (Budhwar Vrat): Which Wednesdays Actually Suit It

Published 2026-08-21 | Live Pandit Ji

Every guide to the Budhwar vrat tells you to keep it on a Wednesday, wear green, and offer moong to Ganesha. None of them mentions the thing that makes Wednesdays different from Saturdays or Tuesdays: Mercury's condition changes faster than any other planet's. Saturn spends two and a half years in a sign; Mercury can be exalted, combust, retrograde and back to normal inside eight weeks. So the fifty-two Wednesdays of a year are genuinely not interchangeable, and it is possible to say which ones are which.

This page does that for 2026 and 2027 from the site's DE421 ephemeris table in the sidereal Lahiri frame. It is not a claim that a vrat only works on the right Wednesday — the tradition makes no such claim, and weekly discipline is worth more than timing. It is the answer to a fair question that normally gets no answer at all: if Budhwar is Mercury's day, what is Mercury actually doing on it?

Fifty-Two Wednesdays, Twenty-Seven of Them Clean

There are fifty-two Wednesdays in 2026 and fifty-two in 2027. Across the two years, taking the two conditions that actually weaken Budh:

  • 20 of the 104 fall while Mercury is retrograde.
  • 41 of the 104 fall inside a combustion window — 20 in 2026 and 21 in 2027 — taking combustion at the common twelve degrees of separation from the Sun.
  • 11 fall under both at once, which is not a coincidence: every inferior conjunction of Mercury in these two years happens inside a retrograde loop, so "retrograde and combust" names one situation, not two.
  • 27 Wednesdays in 2026 and 27 in 2027 have Mercury neither retrograde nor combust. Exactly the same count in both years, and just over half.

That last number is the useful one. Roughly one Wednesday in two has Mercury in ordinary working condition, which is a rather different picture from the impression that a Wednesday is a Wednesday. It also means anyone who resolves to keep the vrat "until things improve" will, on average, spend about half those Wednesdays under one Mercury affliction or another — worth knowing in advance rather than reading into it later. If you want to see where a given week falls, the retrograde checker takes a date and answers directly.

The Twenty Retrograde Wednesdays

Mercury retrogrades six times in these two years, three times a year, and the Wednesdays inside each loop are these:

  • Mercury turns retrograde on 26 February 2026 at 12:17 IST and direct on 21 March 2026 at 01:03 — 4, 11 and 18 March 2026.
  • Retrograde on 29 June 2026 at 23:05 and direct on 24 July 2026 at 04:28 — 1, 8, 15 and 22 July 2026.
  • Retrograde on 24 October 2026 at 12:42 and direct on 13 November 2026 at 21:24 — 28 October, 4 and 11 November 2026.
  • Retrograde on 9 February 2027 at 23:05 and direct on 3 March 2027 at 18:02 — 10, 17 and 24 February and 3 March 2027.
  • Retrograde on 10 June 2027 at 23:44 and direct on 5 July 2027 at 01:10 — 16, 23 and 30 June 2027.
  • Retrograde on 7 October 2027 at 20:06 and direct on 28 October 2027 at 19:40 — 13, 20 and 27 October 2027.

Three, four, three, four, three, three. The four-Wednesday loops are the two longest retrogrades, both around twenty-four days; the three-Wednesday ones are shorter or land awkwardly against the week. And of the twelve station instants in these two years, exactly one falls on a Wednesday: Mercury turns direct in Capricorn on 3 March 2027 at 18:02 IST. That is the only Budhwar in twenty-four months on which Mercury changes direction — retrograde through the morning puja and direct by evening. If you keep the vrat and want one date to mark, that is the one nobody else will have found.

Budhashtami: All Five, With Mercury's Condition on Each

Budhashtami is the coincidence of a Wednesday with Ashtami tithi, and it is the day the tradition singles out for Budh worship. Because the seven-day week and the roughly fifteen-day tithi cycle drift past each other, it happens only a handful of times in a couple of years. Computing the tithi at sunrise in Delhi gives five across 2026 and 2027 — and the interesting part is that Mercury's condition on them is wildly uneven:

  • 11 March 2026, Krishna Ashtami. Mercury is in Aquarius, retrograde and combust.
  • 8 July 2026, Krishna Ashtami. Mercury is again retrograde and combust, and it had reversed back into Gemini the previous day, on 7 July 2026 at 10:53 IST. Both of 2026's Budhashtamis fall under both afflictions at once.
  • 14 April 2027, Shukla Ashtami. Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, having entered on 5 April 2027 at 16:13 — and it passes the fifteenth degree, the deepest point of the debilitation, that same Wednesday. More on this date below.
  • 25 August 2027, Krishna Ashtami. Mercury is in Leo and direct, and it left combustion the day before, on 24 August 2027.
  • 8 September 2027, Shukla Ashtami. Mercury is exalted in Virgo, having entered on 31 August 2027 at 01:57, direct, not combust, and one day short of its deepest exaltation degree.

So of the five Budhashtamis of these two years, two have Mercury retrograde and combust, one has it at the very bottom of its debilitation, and one — 8 September 2027 — has it exalted, direct and clear of the Sun. That single date is the strongest Budh observance available in twenty-four months, and it is worth planning around in a way that a generic "keep the Wednesday vrat" instruction can never tell you.

One honest caveat: these are the days on which the tithi at sunrise in New Delhi is Ashtami. Panchangs differ by a day when the tithi turns close to sunrise, and they differ by location. Treat the list as the computed condition and let your own panchang or your pandit settle the observance.

Wednesdays With Mercury Exalted, and With It Debilitated

Mercury is the only planet that rules one sign and is exalted in another next door to it: Virgo is both its own sign and its exaltation, and Pisces opposite is its debilitation. Because Mercury never strays far from the Sun, it visits Virgo at roughly the same time each year, and so do the Wednesdays.

Eight Wednesdays in these two years have Mercury exalted in Virgo: 9, 16 and 23 September 2026, then 1, 8 and 15 September 2027, and then two more late in 2027, on 27 October and 3 November, because Mercury reverses back into Virgo on 21 October 2027. The 27 October one is exalted but retrograde, which is a fair illustration of why a single label is never the whole reading.

Six have Mercury debilitated in Pisces: 15, 22 and 29 April 2026, and 7, 14 and 21 April 2027. Mid-April is therefore the weakest stretch of Wednesdays in the year, every year, and mid-September the strongest. That is a fact about the solar calendar rather than about you, and it is one of the few genuinely predictable things in this whole subject.

Four Sankrantis on a Wednesday, and One Remarkable Date

Of the twenty-four Sankrantis in these two years — the Sun's entries into the twelve signs — four fall on a Wednesday: the Sun enters Capricorn on 14 January 2026 at 15:04 IST, Sagittarius on 16 December 2026 at 10:20, Aries on 14 April 2027 at 15:23, and Scorpio on 17 November 2027 at 01:53. For comparison, exactly one falls on a Sunday.

Which brings us to Wednesday 14 April 2027, the single most crowded date in this entire two-year window. Three things coincide on it. The tithi at sunrise is Shukla Ashtami, so it is a Budhashtami. The Sun enters Aries on 14 April 2027 at 15:23 IST, so it is Mesha Sankranti, the solar new year. And Mercury, in Pisces since 5 April 2027, passes the deepest degree of its debilitation the same day. A Budh observance day, a Sankranti, and Mercury at its lowest point — all on one Wednesday, and it does not happen again in these two years.

What to make of that is a question for a pandit rather than for arithmetic. The arithmetic's contribution is simply that the coincidence is real and that it is the only one of its kind here. Read alongside the Budh remedies page, which works through what debilitation, combustion and retrogression each actually mean.

How the Budhwar Vrat Is Kept (बुधवार व्रत विधि)

The practice itself is simple, and it is the same on a good Wednesday and a bad one:

  • The deity — Ganesha on most Wednesdays, and Vishnu in the traditions that assign Budh to him. Either is correct; keep to one.
  • The fast — one meal, taken after the evening puja, of things without salt in the stricter form. Green moong, green vegetables, and moong dal are the usual foods, and dark green cloth the usual colour.
  • The offering — durva grass to Ganesha, which is his specific offering and not interchangeable with other leaves; modak or laddoo; and green flowers or leaves where you can find them.
  • The mantra — the Budh beej mantra ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः (Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah) 108 times, or the Ganapati Atharvashirsha, or for the Vishnu form the Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • The donation — moong dal, green cloth, or bronze, given rather than displayed.
  • The count — seven, twenty-one or forty-five consecutive Wednesdays are the usual resolutions. Given the arithmetic above, a run of twenty-one will contain roughly four retrograde Wednesdays and eight or so combust ones; that is normal and is not a sign the vrat has failed.

The Budhwar vrat is prescribed for the things Budh governs: speech and writing, study and examinations, trade and negotiation, nervous complaints, and the general clarity of thinking. If the reason you are considering it is a chart reading that named a weak Mercury, read the Budh remedies first, because a Mercury described as weak is very often merely combust — which is a fact about the Sun. The companion practice on the other side of the week is Sunday fasting for Surya, and the other planetary vrats follow the same shape: Monday for Shiva, Thursday for Guru, Saturday for Shani.

Where the Numbers on This Page Come From

Station and ingress instants are DE421 values from the site's committed ephemeris table — apparent geocentric longitude, true equinox and ecliptic of date, Lahiri ayanamsa subtracted, times in IST. It is the same table the monthly rashifal pages are checked against, and the same one the retrograde tool reads. Tithi and weekday facts come from the site's day-by-day panchang, computed from the same kernel and read at sunrise for New Delhi.

Two things here are deliberately given as dates and not as minutes. Combustion depends on a threshold somebody chose — twelve degrees of separation in most texts, fourteen in others — so a boundary printed to the minute would claim a precision the convention does not have. The same goes for the fifteenth degree of Pisces or Virgo: the crossing has an exact instant, but its significance is a shastra convention, so the day is as far as the claim should go.

Check Your Own Budh Before You Start

Whether a Budhwar vrat is the right remedy depends on what Mercury is doing in your chart, not in the sky this week. A free kundli prints Mercury's sign, degree, house and distance from the Sun, which settles the diagnosis; a consultation with a pandit settles what to do about it and which of the observances above is worth your Wednesdays.
