Upachaya Houses 3, 6, 10 and 11: The Lords by Lagna

Upachaya Meaning (उपचय भाव)

The Sanskrit noun upachaya means increase or accumulation, and in Hindi the word उपचय is glossed the same way, as वृद्धि. In Parashari usage an upachaya bhava is one of a fixed group of four houses counted from the lagna. The site’s house table marks the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th with the identical label, “Upachaya (malefics gain here)”, and no other house carries it. The Four Houses and Their Other Labels

Read across the last column, the four do not sit in one other class. The 10th is the only kendra among them, an angle as well as an upachaya. The 6th is the only house in the whole table to be both an upachaya and a dusthana, so it appears again on the dusthana houses page. The 3rd is labelled apoklima (cadent) and the 11th panapara (succedent), while the 6th has no label of that kind at all; the table’s labelling is partial, and the page reports it as it stands. The 3rd also carries “Dusthana in some traditions”. The site’s lordship code does not count that as a dusthana, and neither does this page.

The matters the table lists for these houses are mixed. Under the 3rd it gives younger siblings, courage and effort, communication style and short journeys; under the 10th, career and profession and public reputation; under the 11th, friends and networks and aspirations; and among the 6th’s, service and routine. Those are what each house is read for, not what any graha placed there brings about.

Which Grahas the Planet Table Lists for Them

Each graha’s entry in the planet table has a line of houses it is read as doing well in. Only Mars, Saturn and Rahu name all four upachayas there. The lists for Mars and Rahu are exactly the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, while Saturn’s adds the 7th. Ketu’s list has the 3rd, 6th and 11th but not the 10th. The Sun and Mercury list the 10th and 11th; the Moon, Jupiter and Venus list the 11th and none of the others. So the 11th appears in all nine lists, the one house every graha’s line shares. Among the seven sign lords, Mars and Saturn are the two that the same table classes plainly as malefic; it calls the Sun a mild malefic, and Rahu and Ketu malefic (shadow).

The Upachaya Lords for Each Lagna

Lordship here is whole-sign: the lagna’s sign is the 1st house, and each house belongs to the ruler of the sign on it. Each cell gives the sign and its lord.

Six Lagnas Give Two Upachayas to One Graha

The last column splits the zodiac cleanly. For Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, the fire and air lagnas, at least one graha rules two of the four houses. For the six earth and water lagnas, the four upachayas always have four different lords. Aries is the extreme row: Mercury holds the 3rd and 6th and Saturn the 10th and 11th, so two grahas share the whole group. Counting across the rows, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn each rule at least one upachaya for seven lagnas, Mars and Venus for six, and the Sun and the Moon for four each. No graha is shut out of the group.

Since the label speaks of malefics, it is worth seeing where Mars and Saturn stand as lords. For eleven lagnas at least one of them rules an upachaya. Libra is the exception: its four are held by Jupiter (the 3rd and 6th), the Moon and the Sun. And for Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces, the lagna lord is itself an upachaya lord, through the 6th for Taurus, 10th for Virgo, 6th for Scorpio and 10th for Pisces. Two of those run through the 6th, the house that is a dusthana too, and two through the 10th, the kendra. Saturn, Jupiter and Rahu in the Upachayas, to 2028

The three grahas tracked here change sign only a few times between 26 October 2026 and 31 December 2028, a window of 798 days. Their signs, from the site’s ingress table, are below; dates are days only. Rahu’s rows come from the mean node, so its days are soft by up to a day.

Counting houses from each lagna, the next table adds up the days each of the three is in an upachaya, split by house and rounded to whole days.

Saturn moves only between Pisces and Aries in the window, and for a Gemini lagna those are the 10th and the 11th, so for Gemini alone Saturn is in an upachaya on every one of the 798 days. For Aries, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces it is in none of them at any point. Rahu’s largest total belongs to Pisces, where Capricorn and Sagittarius are the 11th and 10th: 191 days in the 10th and 566 days in the 11th. These counts describe the sky, measured against each lagna; they are not counts of people and they forecast nothing.

What This Page Does Not Do

Nothing above reads an outcome. The label “malefics gain here” is quoted as the house table gives it, and the page does not turn it into a promise about Mars, Saturn or Rahu in anyone’s 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, or say that a transit through those houses will bring or hold back anything. It also gives no age at which these houses are supposed to show their results.
