Upapada Lagna: The Arudha of the 12th House

What the Upapada Lagna Is (उपपद लग्न)

The upapada, often written UL, is the pada of the 12th house: the sign reached by counting from the 12th house to its lord and the same number again. Jaimini’s sutras read marriage from it, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the same counting rule for the padas of all twelve houses. The count itself, with its two exceptions and worked examples, is set out on the arudha lagna page and is not repeated here. What changes for the upapada is the starting point. The count begins at the 12th sign, not the lagna, so the first step is to know which sign that is and which graha rules it.

The 12th House and Its Lord, Lagna by Lagna

The 12th sign is the one just before the lagna. Its lord, from the single-lord table, is the graha whose position starts the upapada count.

Two lagnas, Leo and Virgo, have a 12th lord that rules nothing else, because their 12th signs, Cancer and Leo, belong to the Moon and the Sun, the two grahas with one sign each. For an Aquarius lagna the 12th lord is Saturn, which also rules the lagna, so a single graha starts both the arudha lagna count and the upapada count. Even then the two never land on the same sign: across all twelve signs Saturn can occupy, the grid on this page and the arudha lagna grid disagree in every column of the Aquarius row. The single-lord table again means Scorpio counts from Mars and Aquarius from Saturn. Some Jaimini practice gives Scorpio and Aquarius a second lord, Ketu and Rahu, with a rule for choosing between them; this page does not use it, so its Sagittarius and Pisces rows, whose 12th signs are those two, would differ under that practice.

How to Find the Upapada (उपपद लग्न कैसे निकालें)

Take an Aries lagna. Its 12th sign is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Suppose Jupiter occupies Cancer, the 4th house from the lagna. From Pisces to Cancer is five signs; five more from Cancer reach Scorpio, which is neither Pisces nor the 7th from it, so no exception applies. The upapada is Scorpio, the 8th house from the lagna.

The table below does the same for each house the 12th lord can occupy. Note the offset in the middle column: the 12th lord in the 1st house from the lagna is in the 2nd from the 12th, and so on round, because the count starts one sign earlier.

The exceptions fire with the 12th lord in the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses from the lagna, which are the angles counted from the 12th. Each upapada house is one less than the arudha lagna house for the same count, since the same arithmetic is run from a sign one place back: row by row, the last column is the arudha lagna table’s last column moved back one house. The house links in the first column go to the site’s pages on the 12th lord in each house.

Where the Upapada Can and Cannot Fall

Counted from the lagna, the upapada can occupy six houses, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th, 9th and 10th, each reached from two positions of the 12th lord. It can never fall in the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th or 12th. The 12th and the 6th are ruled out by the exceptions (the 12th house itself and the 7th from it); the lagna and the 5th, 7th and 11th are ruled out because the doubled count from the 12th always lands on an odd house from the 12th, which is an even house from the lagna, and the exceptions only add the 9th and 3rd.

Upapada Lagna in the 2nd or 8th House

An upapada in the 2nd house means the count from the 12th has landed on the sign after the lagna. That happens with the 12th lord in the 1st or 7th house from the lagna. An upapada in the 8th means the count has landed on the 8th sign from the lagna, which happens with the 12th lord in the 4th or 10th. That is the whole of what the placement says on its own. Jaimini practice goes on to read the upapada with the grahas in it and aspecting it and the signs counted from it, and this page does not attach an outcome to either house.

Find the lagna down the side and the sign the 12th lord occupies along the top. Each lagna has six possible upapada signs, one for each reachable house.

Upapada and Spouse Appearance: Not Answered Here

This page does not describe a spouse’s looks, complexion or character, from the upapada or from anything else in a chart. A chart is cast for the person born; reading another person’s body or nature from it is something the site does not do, and descriptions of a partner’s appearance have a long habit of turning into grades of skin colour. The page also says nothing about whether or how a marriage happens or how it goes. Jaimini practice reads marriage from the upapada as one part of a whole chart, and those readings are not reproduced here.
