Indu Lagna: How to Calculate It, With a Table for Every Lagna

Indu Lagna Kya Hota Hai (इंदु लग्न)

Indu is a name of the Moon, and the Indu lagna is a sign worked out from two others: the lagna and the Moon sign. Mantreswara’s Phaladeepika gives the rule and reads the resulting sign for wealth. It is a derived sign, like the arudha lagna, and not a second rising sign: nothing rises at the Indu lagna, and it is found by counting, not from the sky. This page sets out the arithmetic and a lookup for every combination. What the Phaladeepika goes on to say about wealth is reported as its view and not extended.

The Kala Values of the Seven Grahas

The rule gives each sign lord a number of kalas, often translated as rays. Rahu and Ketu own no sign in this scheme and have no value.

Because the sum is divided by 12 at the end, only the third column matters to the result. Two consequences follow. Venus’s 12 kalas leave a remainder of 0, so a Venus 9th lord adds nothing to the count. And the Sun’s 30 and Mars’s 6 both leave 6, so the two act identically even though one carries five times the kalas of the other.

How to Calculate the Indu Lagna (इंदु लग्न कैसे निकालें)

1. Find the 9th sign from the lagna and note its lord.
2. Find the 9th sign from the Moon sign and note its lord.
3. Add the two lords’ kalas.
4. Divide by 12 and keep the remainder. A remainder of 0 counts as 12; a sum of 12 or less is used as it stands.
5. Count that many signs from the Moon sign, taking the Moon sign as one. The sign you reach is the Indu lagna.

A short sum: a Leo lagna with the Moon in Taurus. The 9th from Leo is Aries, ruled by Mars (6 kalas). The 9th from Taurus is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn (1). The total is 7, below 12, so count seven signs from Taurus: the Indu lagna is Scorpio, the 4th sign from the lagna.

A sum above 12: a Sagittarius lagna with the Moon in Cancer. The 9th from Sagittarius is Leo, ruled by the Sun (30); the 9th from Cancer is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter (10). 40 divided by 12 leaves 4, and the 4th sign from Cancer is Libra, the 11th from the lagna.

Why Twelve Lagnas Need Only Seven Rows

The lagna enters the rule only through its 9th lord, and five grahas are the 9th lord of two lagnas each. Lagnas that share a 9th lord therefore share every Indu lagna, whatever the Moon sign: Leo and Pisces (Mars); Libra and Capricorn (Mercury); Aries and Cancer (Jupiter); Virgo and Aquarius (Venus); Taurus and Gemini (Saturn). Only Sagittarius, with the Sun as 9th lord, and Scorpio, with the Moon, have rows of their own. Across all 144 combinations the sum runs from 2 to 60.

Two cases are easy to get wrong by hand. In 17 of the 144 cells the remainder is 0, so the Indu lagna is the 12th sign from the Moon. In eight cells the remainder is 1 and the Indu lagna is the Moon sign itself.

Indu Lagna Lookup: Every Lagna and Moon Sign

Find the lagna in the first column and the Moon sign along the top; the cell is the Indu lagna. The free kundli gives both inputs, the lagna and the Moon sign, from the birth date, time and place, and the Moon sign calculator gives the second on its own.

A lagna near the edge of a sign, or a Moon close to a sign boundary, can move you to a different row or column, so both inputs need an accurate birth time. The grid assumes sidereal signs, as every table on this site does.

What This Page Does Not Do

It does not say what an Indu lagna in a given sign means for your income, and it does not tell anyone to make or avoid a financial decision because of one. The Phaladeepika goes on to read the grahas placed in the Indu lagna as part of its account of wealth, and that reading needs the whole chart, not a lookup grid. Money questions belong with the facts of your situation and, where it matters, a qualified adviser. The 2nd house page covers the house the tradition reads first for savings, and the list of kundli yogas sets out the named combinations this site has measured.
