Arudha Lagna: How to Calculate It, With a Table for All 12 Lagnas

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Arudha Lagna Meaning (आरूढ़ लग्न)

Arudha means mounted or risen, and an arudha, also called a pada, is a sign derived from a house by a fixed count. Every house of a chart has one; the arudha of the 1st house is the arudha lagna, often written AL. Jaimini’s sutras use it beside the lagna rather than in place of it: in that practice the lagna stands for the person, and the arudha lagna for the image of the person in the world, the standing that others see. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the same counting rule for the padas. This page sets out the count, the two exceptions, and what the arithmetic allows and rules out. It does not read an arudha lagna in any sign as good or bad. If the difference between the lagna and the Moon sign is unfamiliar, the rashi and lagna explainer covers it first.

How to Calculate the Arudha Lagna (आरूढ़ लग्न कैसे निकालें)

You need two things: the lagna sign and the sign its lord occupies. Count from the lagna to the lord’s sign, taking the lagna itself as one. Then count the same number again, starting from the lord’s sign as one. The sign you arrive at is the arudha lagna, unless it is the lagna itself or the 7th sign from the lagna. In those two cases the rule moves it to the 10th sign from wherever it fell: from the lagna to the 10th house, or from the 7th house to the 4th.

An example without an exception: a Cancer lagna with the Moon, its lord, in Virgo. From Cancer to Virgo is three signs (Cancer, Leo, Virgo). Counting three from Virgo gives Scorpio, which is the 5th sign from the lagna, so the arudha lagna is Scorpio.

An example with one: a Libra lagna with Venus in Aries, the 7th sign. Counting seven from Aries comes back to Libra, the lagna itself, so the rule takes the 10th sign from Libra, which is Cancer. The arudha lagna is Cancer, in the 10th house.

Lords are the single sign lords of the Parashari table, so Scorpio counts from Mars and Aquarius from Saturn. Some Jaimini practice gives Scorpio and Aquarius a second lord, Ketu and Rahu respectively, with a rule for choosing between the two; this page uses the single lord only, and its tables would differ from that practice for those two lagnas.

Lagna Lord in House n, Arudha Lagna in House m

Because the count is relative, the house the arudha lagna lands in depends only on the house the lagna lord occupies, and the pattern is the same for all twelve lagnas. The table works it out for each of the twelve positions.

Lagna lord inCount from the lord lands inException?Arudha lagna in

12th house11th houseno11th house

The exception fires for four lord positions, the four angles (kendras): the lord in the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th. With the lord in the 1st, the count is one and stays on the lagna, so the arudha lagna moves to the 10th. With the lord in the 7th, seven counted from the 7th returns to the lagna and the result is again the 10th. With the lord in the 4th or the 10th, the count reaches the 7th house and the rule moves it to the 4th. The lord-in-the-4th row has a small curiosity: the 4th sign is where the lord already sits, so for every lagna the arudha lagna is then the very sign the lord occupies.

The Arudha Lagna Never Falls in the 1st or 7th House

Counting n signs from the lagna and then n more from the lord lands on the house numbered 2n − 1, counted round the twelve, so before the exceptions the result is always one of the odd houses, the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. The exceptions then remove the 1st and the 7th and add the 10th and the 4th. What is left is six houses the arudha lagna can occupy, the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th, and each is reached from exactly two lord positions:

  • 3rd house: the lagna lord in the 2nd or 8th
  • 4th house: the lagna lord in the 4th or 10th
  • 5th house: the lagna lord in the 3rd or 9th
  • 9th house: the lagna lord in the 5th or 11th
  • 10th house: the lagna lord in the 1st or 7th
  • 11th house: the lagna lord in the 6th or 12th

The two positions that share a result are always six houses apart, because moving the lord six signs moves the doubled count twelve, a full circle. The six houses the arudha lagna cannot occupy are the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th, 8th and 12th. An arudha lagna shown in one of those houses was not counted by the rule on this page.

Arudha Lagna Lookup: Every Lagna and Lord Sign

There is no arudha calculator on this site, but the grid below does the same job. Find the lagna in the first column and the sign its lord occupies along the top; the cell is the arudha lagna. Each lagna has six possible arudha signs, one for each reachable house, and every sign of the zodiac appears as an arudha lagna for some lagna.

Only the lagna sign is needed to pick the row. The ascendant calculator and the free kundli both give it from the birth date, time and place. The column needs the sign of the lagna lord, which a full birth chart lists.

The Arudha of the Other Houses

The same count from any house to its own lord gives that house’s pada, and Jaimini’s sutras name several of them. The one most often asked about is the pada of the 12th house, the upapada, which that tradition reads for marriage; its table, counted from the 12th sign rather than the lagna, is on the upapada lagna page. Another Jaimini point worked from a chart’s degrees rather than its signs is the atmakaraka, which Jaimini practice takes as the graha with the highest degree within its sign, described on the atmakaraka page.

What This Page Does Not Do

It does not say what an arudha lagna in a given sign or house brings, and it does not describe anyone’s reputation from one. In Jaimini practice the arudha lagna is read together with the grahas occupying it and aspecting it, the signs counted from it and the dasha running, and none of that can be taken from a counting table. The grid also cannot tell you which cell is yours without the birth chart: the lagna sign depends on the birth time and place, and a lagna near the edge of a sign needs an accurate birth time to settle. In Hindi: आरूढ़ लग्न: गणना की विधि, सभी 12 लग्नों की तालिका.

The Signs You Need for the Count

The Janam Kundli report lists the twelve houses with their signs and lords and the sign each lord occupies, which is everything the arudha count uses. It does not compute or interpret the arudha lagna itself.
