Badhakesh for Each Lagna: The Badhaka House and Its Lord
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Badhaka Sthana and Badhakesh (बाधक स्थान, बाधकेश)
Badhaka means one who obstructs. The badhaka sthana is a house singled out by the nature of the lagna sign, and its lord is the badhakesh, or badhakadhipati. The rule comes from Prashna Marga, the Kerala manual of horary astrology, where it is used to locate the source of a difficulty a question is about, and it is also applied to birth charts. Unlike the trines, angles and dusthanas, the badhaka house is not fixed: which house it is depends on whether the lagna is a movable, a fixed or a dual sign.
The Rule: Movable 11th, Fixed 9th, Dual 7th
- Movable (chara) lagnas, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn: the 11th house.
- Fixed (sthira) lagnas, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius: the 9th house.
- Dual (dvisvabhava) lagnas, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces: the 7th house.
The three counts carry a pattern that is easy to miss. The 11th sign from a movable sign is always fixed, the 9th from a fixed sign is always movable, and the 7th from a dual sign is always dual. So the badhaka sign of a movable lagna is a fixed sign, the badhaka sign of a fixed lagna is a movable one, and a dual lagna’s badhaka stays among the duals. The sign itself, and so its lord, follows from the lagna alone.
Badhaka House and Badhakesh for All 12 Lagnas
Houses are whole-sign, counted from the lagna sign, and the badhakesh is the single Parashari lord of the badhaka sign. The last column links the gemstone page for that lagna and that graha’s stone, which already takes the badhaka lordship into account. Your lagna comes from the ascendant calculator.
| Lagna | Kind | Badhaka house | Badhaka sign | Badhakesh | Houses it owns | Gemstone page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries (मेष) | Chara | 11th | Aquarius | Saturn | 10th, 11th | Blue Sapphire |
| Taurus (वृषभ) | Sthira | 9th | Capricorn | Saturn | 9th, 10th | Blue Sapphire |
| Gemini (मिथुन) | Dvisvabhava | 7th | Sagittarius | Jupiter | 7th, 10th | Yellow Sapphire |
| Cancer (कर्क) | Chara | 11th | Taurus | Venus | 4th, 11th | Diamond |
| Leo (सिंह) | Sthira | 9th | Aries | Mars | 4th, 9th | Red Coral |
| Virgo (कन्या) | Dvisvabhava | 7th | Pisces | Jupiter | 4th, 7th | Yellow Sapphire |
| Libra (तुला) | Chara | 11th | Leo | Sun | 11th | Ruby |
| Scorpio (वृश्चिक) | Sthira | 9th | Cancer | Moon | 9th | Pearl |
| Sagittarius (धनु) | Dvisvabhava | 7th | Gemini | Mercury | 7th, 10th | Emerald |
| Capricorn (मकर) | Chara | 11th | Scorpio | Mars | 4th, 11th | Red Coral |
| Aquarius (कुम्भ) | Sthira | 9th | Libra | Venus | 4th, 9th | Diamond |
| Pisces (मीन) | Dvisvabhava | 7th | Virgo | Mercury | 4th, 7th | Emerald |
The badhakesh is never the lagna lord, for any lagna. Each graha with two signs is the badhakesh of two lagnas, and the luminaries of one each: the Sun for Libra; the Moon for Scorpio; Mars for Leo and Capricorn; Mercury for Sagittarius and Pisces; Jupiter for Gemini and Virgo; Venus for Cancer and Aquarius; Saturn for Aries and Taurus. The Sun for Libra and the Moon for Scorpio own nothing besides the badhaka sign.
Fixed Lagnas: When the Badhakesh Is Also the Yogakaraka
For a fixed lagna the badhaka house is the 9th, a trine, and in Parashari functional lordship the 9th lord is among the most favoured grahas of a chart. For three of the four fixed lagnas the conflict is sharper still, because the badhakesh also owns an angle and is the yogakaraka: Saturn for Taurus (9th, 10th), Mars for Leo (4th, 9th) and Venus for Aquarius (4th, 9th). The fourth, Scorpio, has the Moon as badhakesh, owning the 9th alone.
The badhaka rule comes from horary practice and the trine rule from Parashari natal lordship, and this page does not rank one above the other. The site’s gemstone pages keep the trine lordship as the main reading and name the badhaka role beside it: the blue sapphire page for a Taurus lagna, for example, keeps Saturn’s yogakaraka verdict and names the badhaka lordship beside it.
Dual Lagnas: The Badhakesh Is the 7th Lord
For the four dual lagnas the badhaka house is the 7th, so the badhakesh is the 7th lord, and for every one of them that lord owns a second angle as well: Jupiter for Gemini (7th, 10th), Jupiter for Virgo (4th, 7th), Mercury for Sagittarius (7th, 10th) and Mercury for Pisces (4th, 7th). Only Jupiter and Mercury fill the role, each for the two dual lagnas that are not its own. The same 7th is a maraka house, so for these lagnas one graha carries the badhaka label, the maraka label and, as a natural benefic owning two angles, kendradhipati dosha. The maraka planets and kendradhipati dosha pages tabulate the other two labels.
Movable Lagnas: The 11th Lord
The 11th is the house of gains in ordinary reading, an upachaya, and for movable lagnas its lord is the badhakesh. Three of the four also own an angle: Saturn for Aries (10th, 11th), Venus for Cancer (4th, 11th) and Mars for Capricorn (4th, 11th). The Sun for Libra owns the 11th and nothing else. The upachaya houses page covers the 11th in its other role.
What This Page Does Not Do
It does not say what a badhakesh will obstruct in your life, when, or how to remove it. In Prashna Marga the badhaka is read together with the grahas in and aspecting the badhaka house and with the question being asked, and Kerala practice goes on to connect it with particular deities and with sarpa dosha; none of that can be taken from a sign table, and this page does not reproduce it. It sells no puja for a badhakesh. A graha that owns the badhaka sign for your lagna is not, on that account, a graha to fear.
In Hindi: बाधकेश: हर लग्न का बाधक भाव और बाधक ग्रह.
Every House Lord in Your Chart
The Janam Kundli report lists your lagna, the twelve houses with their signs and lords, and where each lord sits, which is what the badhaka count starts from. It does not make a badhaka or prashna reading.
