Where the 4th and 11th Lordship Comes From

Mars owns Aries and Scorpio. Counting from Capricorn as the first house, Aries is the 4th and Scorpio is the 11th — which is the whole of it. Two signs, two houses — the 4th and the 11th from Capricorn — and the verdict on red coral turns on which of the two carries more weight.

Neither of these is a trikona or a dusthana, so the rule that decides most cases does not apply. Red coral is not contraindicated for Capricorn and it is not indicated either — it becomes relevant only if Mars is specifically afflicted in the chart, or if a dasha of Mars is running.

The Capricorn gemstone page states this as a single line — “Red Coral — Mars rules the 4th and the 11th” — and lists it among the stones to avoid for this ascendant.

That is a stricter line than this page takes, and the difference is worth naming. The Capricorn page puts 11th-lordship on its avoid side, and it does so consistently — in all twelve places on the grid where a graha owns the 11th from an ascendant, its stone is on that ascendant's avoid list and never on its good one. The trikona and dusthana test this page runs says nothing about the 11th in either direction. On this combination there is a further reason to take the stricter reading seriously: it cannot be worn alongside blue sapphire, the Capricorn primary stone and Mars owns the badhaka house from here. Neither page overrules the other: the lordship does not forbid red coral, and nothing on this page is a case for wearing it without a reading.

Wearing It Alongside Blue Sapphire

Blue Sapphire is the Capricorn primary stone, because Saturn rules Capricorn (Makara) and owns the 1st and the 2nd from it. So the pairing a Capricorn native is most likely to consider is red coral with blue sapphire, and whether that is allowed depends on how Mars and Saturn rate each other.

Saturn counts Mars an enemy while Mars rates Saturn neutral. Parashari friendship is not symmetric — eleven of the twenty-one graha pairs rate each other differently in the two directions, and seven of those eleven are a one-sided enmity exactly like this one. Tradition does not split the difference: one-way enmity is enough to rule the combination out, so a Capricorn native should not wear red coral and blue sapphire together.

On red coral generally: Coral is soft and porous. Remove it before applying perfume, chemicals or chlorinated water, and expect to replace it every few years as the colour dulls.

Mars in Capricorn Itself

House lordship is one axis and sign dignity is another, and for a Capricorn ascendant they do not always agree. Capricorn is Mars's exaltation sign, deepest at 28°. A Capricorn ascendant is one of the few from which Mars is dignified by sign before house lordship is considered at all, and that argues for red coral on grounds entirely separate from the 4th and the 11th.

Mars governs energy, courage, siblings and property, and its mahadasha runs 7 years. For a Capricorn native those years read through the 4th and the 11th — which is the practical reason the lordship above matters more than the stone's reputation does.

The Two Padas of Capricorn Where the Two Routes Disagree

Selecting a stone by janma nakshatra is the more precise route, because it pins the birth Moon to one nakshatra instead of a whole sign. Three nakshatras touch Capricorn — but a sign is nine padas of 3°20′ and the three divide them unevenly, not into thirds. Dhanishta (Capricorn 23°20′ – Aquarius 6°40′) is ruled by Mars, and covers two of the nine.

So there is a real disagreement for those births: the nakshatra lord is Mars, which argues for red coral, while the 4th and the 11th from the ascendant argue against it. Neither route overrules the other on paper. In practice the ascendant's lordship is what a reading weighs first, and a birth under Dhanishta is the one circumstance in which a Capricorn native might be pointed at red coral anyway.

What a Capricorn Ascendant Should Wear Instead

A graha owning neither a trikona nor a dusthana from Capricorn has no particular work to do for that ascendant, and Mars is in exactly that position here. These stones do have work to do.

Venus is the yogakaraka for a Capricorn ascendant, holding the 5th and the 10th, so diamond is often the better first stone than blue sapphire even though Saturn is your lagna lord. If you do wear Neelam, trial-wear it — it is your 1st lord, so the effect will be pronounced either way.

If the appeal is red coral itself rather than Mars, its upratna is carnelian — a substitute of the same graha with a far milder effect, which is the usual compromise where the primary stone is contraindicated.

The Ascendants Red Coral Reads Differently For

The same stone is not the same advice from every ascendant, and red coral is a clear example. From Capricorn it is neither indicated nor forbidden. The two ascendants below read differently, and nothing about Mars or about red coral has changed: Aries and Scorpio land on different houses when the counting starts from a different lagna.
