Emerald for a Capricorn Ascendant
मरकत · Panna · Mercury owns the 6th and the 9th from Capricorn
The verdict
The Split Verdict
For a Capricorn ascendant, Mercury owns the 6th and the 9th, the 9th is a trikona and the 6th a dusthana, so the two lordships pull against each other — which makes Panna a genuinely split verdict that needs the chart to settle.
This is the rule for Capricorn (Makara) read as an ascendant. Whether emerald is actually your stone depends on where Mercury sits in that chart — owning the 6th and the 9th is not the same as occupying the 6th and the 9th — how strong it is, and which dasha you are running. That is a reading, not a table lookup.

Where the 6th and 9th Lordship Comes From
Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo. Counting from Capricorn as the first house, Gemini is the 6th and Virgo is the 9th — which is the whole of it. Two signs, two houses — the 6th and the 9th from Capricorn — and the verdict on emerald turns on which of the two carries more weight.
Capricorn is the case the one-line tables cannot handle. The 9th is a trikona and argues for the stone; the 6th is a dusthana and argues against it. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra holds trikona lordship the stronger of the two, so the 9th carries and the verdict leans favourable. But leaning is not the same as settled, and a Capricorn native with Mercury in the 6th is not the same case as one with Mercury well placed.
The Capricorn gemstone page states this as a single line — “Emerald (Mercury, 6th and 9th lord)” — and lists it among the stones that help this ascendant.
Wearing It Alongside Blue Sapphire
Blue Sapphire is the Capricorn primary stone, because Saturn rules Capricorn (Makara) and owns the 1st and the 2nd from it. So the pairing a Capricorn native is most likely to consider is emerald with blue sapphire, and whether that is allowed depends on how Mercury and Saturn rate each other.
Mercury rates Saturn a neutral, and Saturn rates Mercury a friend. No enmity in either direction, so the combination is permitted.
On emerald generally: The most heavily faked stone in the Indian market. Green glass, doublets and synthetic hydrothermal emerald all pass a casual look — certification is not optional here.
Mercury in Capricorn Itself
House lordship is one axis and sign dignity is another, and for a Capricorn ascendant they do not always agree. Mercury is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces, and Capricorn is neither. So there is no dignity bonus and no dignity penalty for a Capricorn ascendant, and the verdict on emerald rests entirely on the 6th and the 9th.
Mercury governs intellect, communication and commerce, and its mahadasha runs 17 years. For a Capricorn native those years read through the 6th and the 9th — which is the practical reason the lordship above matters more than the stone's reputation does.
How to Wear It as a Capricorn Ascendant
- Fix the weight first — roughly one ratti per ten kilograms of body weight, three to five ratti as a practical minimum. Confirm whether the quote is in the 0.9-carat ratti or the traditional 0.12-gram one.
- Judge the stone before the setting. Emerald is almost always included — a completely clean emerald is a red flag for glass or synthetic. What you want is a garden of fine internal lines, good transparency and no surface-reaching cracks. Ask specifically whether it is oiled or resin-filled; heavy filling is treated as nullifying. Colour to expect: grass green to deep velvety green.
- Set it in gold / silver with the back left open so the stone rests on skin, and wear it on the little finger of the right hand. These follow Mercury, not Capricorn, so they differ from what the Capricorn primary stone asks for.
- Wash the ring in raw milk, honey, ghee, curd and clean water, place it before Vishnu, and chant ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः — Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah — 9,000 times, or have the japa performed for you.
- Put it on for the first time on Wednesday morning, and fast on Wednesday to support the same graha.
- You may keep blue sapphire, the Capricorn primary stone, on at the same time, since Mercury and Saturn carry no enmity either way. Observe the first thirty days and remove it if anything worsens sharply.
Because the 6th and the 9th pulls in two directions from Capricorn, the trial matters more here than it does for a straightforward recommendation. Tie the stone to the arm or wear it for three to seven days before committing to a setting.
The Ascendants Emerald Reads Differently For
The same stone is not the same advice from every ascendant, and emerald is a clear example. From Capricorn the verdict is split rather than settled. The two ascendants below read differently, and nothing about Mercury or about emerald has changed: Gemini and Virgo land on different houses when the counting starts from a different lagna.
Mercury owns the 3rd and the 6th from Aries — a stone to avoid.
Mercury owns the 3rd and the 12th from Cancer — a stone to avoid.

Everything above follows from Capricorn being the ascendant and nothing else. Mercury owning the 6th and the 9th is not the same as Mercury sitting there; where it actually sits, whether it is combust or retrograde, and which dasha is running can move this verdict either way.
