The 12th Lord in the 8th House

The 12th lord in the 8th house is the ruler of the 12th, the Vyaya / Moksha Bhava, placed in the 8th, the Ayur / Mrityu Bhava. The 12th is a dusthana and the 8th a dusthana, so the 12th lord in the 8th joins two houses of the same class. Which graha that lord is depends on the ascendant, so the table below answers for all twelve.

Counted from the 12th, the 8th is the 9th house, which from any house is a trikona position; counted back from the 8th, the 12th is the 5th, a trikona position from it.

On the Parashari reading, in which a lord carries its house’s matters to wherever it sits, the 12th lord in the 8th reads the 12th’s matters — expenses and losses, foreign residence, spiritual liberation, and subconscious mind — through the 8th’s: sudden change, occult and research, and inheritance. For the 12th lord in the 8th that is a frame, not a forecast; what it comes to depends on the graha, its dignity below, and the rest of the chart.

The 12th Lord in the 8th, Ascendant by Ascendant

Across the twelve ascendants the 12th lord in the 8th is exalted for Virgo and Pisces, in a friend's sign for Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius, in a neutral sign for Cancer and Leo and debilitated for Sagittarius. The Sun and the Moon rule one sign each, so for Leo and Virgo, where one of them is the 12th lord, it rules no other house; for the other ten the last column gives the second house the 12th lord brings with it to the 8th.

The Reverse: the 8th Lord in the 12th

Where the 8th lord sits in the 12th in the same chart as the 12th lord in the 8th, each lord occupies the other’s sign, an exchange the texts call parivartana. For all twelve ascendants the 12th and the 8th have different lords, so the exchange is possible whatever the ascendant.
