The 8th Lord in the 12th House

The 8th lord in the 12th house is the ruler of the 8th, the Ayur / Mrityu Bhava, placed in the 12th, the Vyaya / Moksha Bhava. The 8th is a dusthana and the 12th a dusthana, so the 8th lord in the 12th joins two houses of the same class. Which graha that lord is depends on the ascendant, so the table below answers for all twelve.

Counted from the 8th, the 12th is the 5th house, which from any house is a trikona position; counted back from the 12th, the 8th is the 9th, a trikona position from it.

On the Parashari reading, in which a lord carries its house’s matters to wherever it sits, the 8th lord in the 12th reads the 8th’s matters — sudden change, occult and research, and inheritance — through the 12th’s: expenses and losses, foreign residence, spiritual liberation, and subconscious mind. For the 8th lord in the 12th that is a frame, not a forecast; what it comes to depends on the graha, its dignity below, and the rest of the chart.

The 8th Lord in the 12th, Ascendant by Ascendant

Across the twelve ascendants the 8th lord in the 12th is exalted for Leo, in a friend's sign for Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces, in a neutral sign for Aquarius and debilitated for Libra and Sagittarius. The Sun and the Moon rule one sign each, so for Sagittarius and Capricorn, where one of them is the 8th lord, it rules no other house; for the other ten the last column gives the second house the 8th lord brings with it to the 12th.

The Reverse: the 12th Lord in the 8th

Where the 12th lord sits in the 8th in the same chart as the 8th lord in the 12th, each lord occupies the other’s sign, an exchange the texts call parivartana. For all twelve ascendants the 8th and the 12th have different lords, so the exchange is possible whatever the ascendant.
