The 8th Lord in the 11th House

The 8th lord in the 11th house is the ruler of the 8th, the Ayur / Mrityu Bhava, placed in the 11th, the Labha Bhava. The 8th is a dusthana and the 11th an upachaya. Which graha that lord is depends on the ascendant, so the table below answers for all twelve.

Counted from the 8th, the 11th is the 4th house, which from any house is a kendra position; counted back from the 11th, the 8th is the 10th, a kendra and an upachaya position from it.

On the Parashari reading, in which a lord carries its house’s matters to wherever it sits, the 8th lord in the 11th reads the 8th’s matters — sudden change, occult and research, and inheritance — through the 11th’s: income and gains, friends and networks, aspirations, and elder siblings. For the 8th lord in the 11th that is a frame, not a forecast; what it comes to depends on the graha, its dignity below, and the rest of the chart.

The 8th Lord in the 11th, Ascendant by Ascendant

Across the twelve ascendants the 8th lord in the 11th is exalted for Scorpio, in its own sign for Taurus, in a friend's sign for Cancer, Capricorn and Pisces, in a neutral sign for Aries, Sagittarius and Aquarius, in an enemy's sign for Leo and Libra and debilitated for Gemini and Virgo. The Sun and the Moon rule one sign each, so for Sagittarius and Capricorn, where one of them is the 8th lord, it rules no other house; for the other ten the last column gives the second house the 8th lord brings with it to the 11th.

For Taurus ascendant the 8th lord, Jupiter, also rules the 11th, so in the 11th it sits in its own other sign, Pisces. For Scorpio ascendant the 8th lord, Mercury, also rules the 11th, so in the 11th it sits in its own other sign, Virgo.

The Reverse: the 11th Lord in the 8th

Where the 11th lord sits in the 8th in the same chart as the 8th lord in the 11th, each lord occupies the other’s sign, an exchange the texts call parivartana. That is possible for ten ascendants. For Taurus (Jupiter) and Scorpio (Mercury) one graha rules both the 8th and the 11th, so there is nothing to exchange.
