The 8th Lord in the 10th House

The 8th lord in the 10th house is the ruler of the 8th, the Ayur / Mrityu Bhava, placed in the 10th, the Karma Bhava. The 8th is a dusthana and the 10th a kendra and an upachaya. Which graha that lord is depends on the ascendant, so the table below answers for all twelve.

Counted from the 8th, the 10th is the 3rd house, which from any house is an upachaya position; counted back from the 10th, the 8th is the 11th, an upachaya position from it.

On the Parashari reading, in which a lord carries its house’s matters to wherever it sits, the 8th lord in the 10th reads the 8th’s matters — sudden change, occult and research, and inheritance — through the 10th’s: career and profession, public reputation, authority, and achievements. For the 8th lord in the 10th that is a frame, not a forecast; what it comes to depends on the graha, its dignity below, and the rest of the chart.

The 8th Lord in the 10th, Ascendant by Ascendant

Across the twelve ascendants the 8th lord in the 10th is exalted for Aries, in a friend's sign for Scorpio and Sagittarius, in a neutral sign for Taurus, Gemini, Aquarius and Pisces, in an enemy's sign for Leo, Virgo and Libra and debilitated for Cancer and Capricorn. The Sun and the Moon rule one sign each, so for Sagittarius and Capricorn, where one of them is the 8th lord, it rules no other house; for the other ten the last column gives the second house the 8th lord brings with it to the 10th.

The Reverse: the 10th Lord in the 8th

Where the 10th lord sits in the 8th in the same chart as the 8th lord in the 10th, each lord occupies the other’s sign, an exchange the texts call parivartana. For all twelve ascendants the 8th and the 10th have different lords, so the exchange is possible whatever the ascendant.
