Dusthana Houses 6, 8, 12 (Trik Bhav): Lords by Lagna
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Dusthana Meaning, and Why It Is Called Trik Bhav (त्रिक भाव)
The word is a Sanskrit compound of dus-, hard or ill, and sthana, place. In Hindi the same group also goes by trik bhav or trik bhava, from trika, a set of three, because there are exactly three of them. The site’s house table gives the label “Dusthana (malefic house)” to the 6th, 8th and 12th and to no other house. That label is a classification in the Parashari scheme. It sorts houses for the purpose of judging lordship; it is not a verdict on a chart, and this page treats it only as a sorting rule. The general picture of the twelve houses is in the twelve houses guide.
Three Houses, Three Different Sets of Labels
| House | Name in the house table | Classification labels |
|---|---|---|
| 6th | 6th House (Ari / Shatru Bhava) (शत्रु भाव) | Dusthana (malefic house); Upachaya (malefics gain here) |
| 8th | 8th House (Ayur / Mrityu Bhava) (आयु भाव) | Dusthana (malefic house) |
| 12th | 12th House (Vyaya / Moksha Bhava) (व्यय भाव) | Dusthana (malefic house); Moksha Trikona (with the 4th and 8th) |
The three share one label and then part ways. The 6th is listed as an upachaya as well, the only house that sits in both groups; its other side is set out on the upachaya houses page. The 8th carries the dusthana label and nothing else. The 12th adds “Moksha Trikona (with the 4th and 8th)”, which ties two of the three dusthanas to the 4th, a kendra. Outside the three, the 3rd is noted as “Dusthana in some traditions”. The lordship code behind the site’s house pages leaves the 3rd out, and so do the tables below; what counting it would change is shown on the Vipreet Raja yoga page.
Of the matters the table lists, this page names only a few that describe a field rather than an event: service and routine under the 6th, occult and research under the 8th, and foreign residence and spiritual liberation under the 12th. The rest of what the table attaches to these houses is left to the individual house pages, and the 12th is treated at more length in 12th house astrology.
Trik Bhav in the Kundli, Lagna by Lagna
With whole-sign houses, the trik bhav of a kundli are the 6th, 8th and 12th signs from the lagna, and their lords are those signs’ rulers. Beside each lord is the class the planet table gives it. The last column is the element shared by the 4th, 8th and 12th signs, the moksha trikona.
| Lagna | 6th: sign, lord (class) | 8th: sign, lord (class) | 12th: sign, lord (class) | 4th, 8th, 12th element |

| Taurus (वृषभ) | Libra, Venus (benefic) | Sagittarius, Jupiter (benefic) | Aries, Mars (malefic) | Fire |
| Gemini (मिथुन) | Scorpio, Mars (malefic) | Capricorn, Saturn (malefic) | Taurus, Venus (benefic) | Earth |

No Graha Is Exempt, and the Classes Vary by Row
Every one of the seven sign lords rules a dusthana for some lagna. Each sign is the 6th from one lagna, the 8th from another and the 12th from a third, so the Sun and the Moon, with one sign each, are dusthana lords for three lagnas apiece, and the other five, with two signs, for six each. That count works only because a single graha never holds two of the three for the same lagna, and the reason for that is laid out on the Vipreet page rather than repeated here.
The class column is where the rows differ. The planet table calls Jupiter and Venus benefic outright, and calls Mars and Saturn malefic and the Sun a mild malefic. Virgo is the only lagna whose three dusthana lords, Saturn, Mars and the Sun, all fall in the malefic classes. Aquarius also has neither Jupiter nor Venus among them; its three are the Moon, Mercury and Saturn. At the other end, Taurus and Libra have both Jupiter and Venus as dusthana lords, Venus holding the 6th and Jupiter the 8th for Taurus, and the reverse for Libra. The remaining eight lagnas have one of the two. A different lordship rule, about benefics that own angles, is set out on kendradhipati dosha.
In five rows the lagna lord is one of the three: Aries (the 8th), Taurus (the 6th), Libra (the 8th), Scorpio (the 6th) and Aquarius (the 12th). How astrologers weigh that, and what changes when the lord of an angle or trine also holds a dusthana, is the subject of the Vipreet page and of the kendra-trikona raja yoga tables, which this page does not repeat.
The Moksha Trikona Always Shares One Element
The 4th, 8th and 12th signs from any lagna are four signs apart from each other, a trine, and signs a trine apart always share an element in the sign table. The element is fixed by the lagna’s own: fire lagnas have a water moksha trikona, earth lagnas a fire one, air lagnas an earth one and water lagnas an air one. So for an Aries lagna the three are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, and for an Aquarius lagna Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The house table records the grouping on the 12th only; the 4th’s and the 8th’s own entries do not mention it.
The planet table’s lists of houses each graha is read as doing well in treat the three dusthanas very differently too. No graha’s list includes the 8th. The 6th is on the lists of Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, and the 12th on those of Venus and Ketu. Only Ketu’s list holds both.
Saturn, Jupiter and Rahu in the Trik Bhav, to 2028
From 26 October 2026 to 31 December 2028, 798 days, the table below counts the days each of three slow grahas is in a dusthana from each lagna, by house and rounded to whole days. Saturn is in Pisces at the start, moves to Aries on 3 June 2027, returns to Pisces on 20 October 2027 and is back in Aries from 23 February 2028; the sign dates for Jupiter and Rahu are listed on the upachaya page. Rahu’s rows are mean-node, so its days can be off by up to a day.
| Lagna | Saturn | Jupiter | Rahu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 12th: 347 days | 6th: 249 days | none |
| Taurus | 12th: 451 days | 6th: 5 days | 8th: 191 days |
| Gemini | none | none | 8th: 566 days |
| Cancer | none | none | 6th: 191 days, 8th: 41 days |
| Leo | 8th: 347 days | 12th: 158 days | 6th: 566 days |
| Virgo | 8th: 451 days | 12th: 386 days | 6th: 41 days |
| Libra | 6th: 347 days | 12th: 249 days | none |
| Scorpio | 6th: 451 days | 12th: 5 days | none |
| Sagittarius | none | 8th: 158 days | none |
| Capricorn | none | 8th: 386 days | 12th: 191 days |
| Aquarius | none | 6th: 158 days, 8th: 249 days | 12th: 566 days |
| Pisces | none | 6th: 386 days, 8th: 5 days | 12th: 41 days |
Saturn’s column divides the lagnas in half. Pisces is the 12th for Aries, 8th for Leo and 6th for Libra; Aries is the 12th for Taurus, 8th for Virgo and 6th for Scorpio. Those six lagnas each have Saturn in one dusthana for part of the window, and Gemini, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces have it in none. Jupiter’s column is empty only for Gemini and Cancer, and Rahu’s for Aries, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius; no row is empty in all three. The figures measure the sky against each lagna and nothing else.
What This Page Does Not Do
This page reads no outcome from a dusthana. It does not say what a graha in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or a transit through one, does to a person, and it gives no period or age for anything. The house table attaches much stronger language to these three houses than to most, and none of that language is used here. A placement in a dusthana is read in the whole chart: the graha’s sign and dignity, which houses it rules for that lagna, what joins or aspects it, and the dasha. Your lagna comes from the ascendant calculator, and the row above then gives your three lords. In Hindi: दुःस्थान भाव 6, 8, 12 (त्रिक भाव): हर लग्न के स्वामी.
The Trik Bhav Lords in Your Kundli
The Janam Kundli report works out your lagna, which graha rules the 6th, 8th and 12th for it, and the sign and house each graha occupies, from your birth details. It does not grade those houses or forecast from them.
