Empty House in Astrology: How a Khali Bhav Is Read

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

What an Empty House Is (कुंडली में खाली भाव)

An empty house, or khali bhav, is a house of the kundli with no graha written in it. On this site houses are counted whole-sign: the sign on the lagna is the entire 1st house, the next sign the entire 2nd, and so on. So a house is empty exactly when no graha stands in its sign. The lagna itself is a point, not a graha, and does not count as an occupant.

People often notice an empty 7th or an empty 10th and wonder whether the box being blank says something on its own. The short answer from the Parashari tradition is that it does not: an unoccupied house is read through other things, set out below. First, though, a piece of arithmetic that settles why the question comes up in every chart.

Why Every Kundli Has at Least Three Empty Houses

A kundli places nine grahas: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are the two ends of one axis and always stand in opposite signs. That is easy to check on the site’s own ingress table: across every stretch of 2026, 2027 and 2028, Ketu’s sign is the 7th from Rahu’s, without exception. So the two nodes can never share a sign, but they also never leave the axis.

Nine bodies can fill at most nine different signs, and only if no two of them share one. Twelve minus nine leaves three, so at least three houses are empty in every chart, and usually more, because grahas often do share signs. Because the houses are whole signs, the number of empty houses in a chart always equals the number of signs that hold no graha at that birth moment; the lagna only decides which house numbers those empty signs become.

How Many Signs Stood Empty in 2026 and 2027

The floor of three is a limit, not a typical value. To see what is typical, the table below cuts 2026 and 2027 at every sign change of all nine bodies and, for each stretch, counts the signs left empty. These are shares of clock time in the sky, not of people born: a chart drawn for any moment in a stretch has that many empty houses, whatever its lagna. Percentages are rounded, so a column can add to 101. The Rahu and Ketu rows of the ingress table are mean-node and soft by up to a day; over two years that is too small to change the picture, though it could tip a rounded figure by one.

Empty signs (houses)Signs occupied20262027Both years
483%4%4%
5734%34%34%
6643%37%40%
7518%22%20%
843%3%3%

Three things stand out. The arithmetic floor of three empty signs never happened in either year: at no point did all nine bodies stand in separate signs, so the fewest empty houses any chart from these two years can show is four. The most was eight. And across the two years the average came to about 5.8 empty signs, so a chart with five, six or seven empty houses is the ordinary case, not a rare one.

The reason is crowding near the Sun. Mercury and Venus never move far from it, so the three often share a sign or sit in neighbouring ones; the Sun and Mercury alone shared a sign for 55% of the clock time in 2026 and 49% in 2027. Every shared sign is one more empty sign elsewhere.

Which signs stood empty depends heavily on where the slow bodies were, so the next table is a fact about these two years only. It gives the share of clock time in 2026 and 2027 together in which each sign held none of the nine:

SignEmpty, share of 2026-2027SignEmpty, share of 2026-2027
Aries (मेष)58%Libra (तुला)64%
Taurus (वृषभ)73%Scorpio (वृश्चिक)74%
Gemini (मिथुन)51%Sagittarius (धनु)76%
Cancer (कर्क)22%Capricorn (मकर)37%
Leo (सिंह)10%Aquarius (कुम्भ)39%
Virgo (कन्या)62%Pisces (मीन)17%

Leo was empty only 10% of the time and Sagittarius 76%: signs that held a slow graha or a node for long spells were rarely empty, and signs that only the fast bodies passed through were empty most of the time. A different pair of years would give a different table.

Empty House in Astrology Meaning: Three Things Read Instead

Since every chart carries several empty houses, a reading that stopped at occupants would have nothing to say about a quarter or more of the kundli. Parashari practice does not stop there. Its practitioners read an empty house through three routes, and none of them treats the emptiness itself as a verdict, good or bad.

  • The house lord. Every house has a lord, the ruler of its sign, whether or not anything sits in it. In this tradition the lord carries the house’s matters to wherever it is placed, so an empty house is read largely from the lord’s sign, house and condition. The names of the twelve lords are on the lagnesh to vyayesh page; every lord in every house is indexed under house-lord placements, and the sign a lord stands in has its own ruler, covered on the dispositor page.
  • The grahas whose full aspect falls on the sign. An empty sign can still be aspected. The site’s planet table gives these full-aspect houses, counted from the graha’s own house as the 1st: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury and Venus the 7th only; Mars the 4th, 7th and 8th; Jupiter the 5th, 7th and 9th; Saturn the 3rd, 7th and 10th. For the nodes the table does not settle it. Rahu’s entry reads “Traditions differ — many follow Jupiter's 5th, 7th and 9th; classical texts give Rahu no aspect at all”, and Ketu’s “Traditions differ; classical texts give Ketu no aspect of its own”. The graha drishti page covers the counting and the Rahu and Ketu aspect page the disagreement.
  • The house’s karaka. Each house also has a natural significator, a graha the tradition reads for that house in every chart regardless of lagna. Its placement is looked at alongside the lord. For the 5th the house table names Jupiter, the Putra Karaka; for the 10th, “Saturn for profession, Sun and Mercury for status”.

Two lines circulate on this subject and neither is a rule from the tradition: that an empty house means its matters never arrive, and the opposite claim that an empty house is somehow protected. Neither appears among the three routes above, all of which look past the empty box to the lord, the aspects and the karaka.

The Twelve Houses When Empty

One row per house, for an empty 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th, 10th or any other. Topics, natural lords and karakas are the site’s house table; the last column is computed from the aspect entries above and lists the houses, counted from the lagna, in which a graha would have its full aspect on this one. The 6th and 8th karaka cells give the graha only. The natural lord is the Kaal Purush lord (the lord for an Aries lagna), not the lord of the house in your chart, which depends on your lagna.

The house number in each row links to that lord’s placement hub. Take the 1st row, the case people describe as “my 1st house is empty”: the routes are the lagnesh, any graha in the 7th facing the lagna, and the karaka, which the house table gives as “Sun, and the Lagna lord itself”. For an empty 4th the karaka entry reads “Moon for the mother and the mind”; for an empty 8th the routes are its lord and Saturn as karaka, and the natural lord column carries the table’s own hedge, “Mars, with Ketu as co-lord”.

Worked Example: An Empty 7th House

The 7th is the Kalatra Bhava (कलत्र भाव), with the topics spouse or partner, marriage, business partnerships and public relations. Suppose a chart has a Taurus lagna and nothing in the 7th. The 7th sign is then Scorpio (वृश्चिक), whose ruler is Mars, so Mars is the 7th lord. A reader in the Parashari line would check, in order:

  1. Where Mars sits. Its house and sign, and that sign’s ruler. The twelve possible houses are worked through on the 7th lord placement hub. One detail falls out of the aspect table: with Mars as 7th lord, a placement in the 1st, 4th or 12th puts the lord’s own aspect on the empty 7th.
  2. What aspects Scorpio. From the table row: any graha in the 1st; Mars in the 4th or 12th; Jupiter in the 3rd or 11th; Saturn in the 5th or 10th. Rahu and Ketu are added or left out according to which of the reckonings quoted above the reader follows.
  3. Where the karaka sits. The site’s house table records the 7th’s karaka in the classical form, “Venus for the spouse, Jupiter for the husband in a woman's chart”. That split is the tradition’s own; this page reports it and adds nothing to it.

That is the whole of the method this page describes. It gives no verdict on an empty 7th, no statement about whether or when anyone marries, and no “delay”. The full set of themes for the house is on the 7th house page.

Empty Houses in the Navamsa (D9)

The same question is asked of divisional charts, most often as “empty 7th house in the D9”. The navamsa is a separate chart with its own lagna, so its empty houses are a separate count and need not match the birth chart’s. Practitioners who read vargas generally apply the same routes there, the D9 lord of the house and the aspects within the D9, and treat the varga as a supplement to the birth chart rather than a replacement. How each divisional chart is built is on the shodashvarga page; this page does not read a D9.

Seeing Your Own Empty Houses

The free kundli tool gives your lagna, Moon sign, nakshatra, running dasha and the sign and house of Mars. That tells you which sign is your 1st house, so you can count the twelve, but it does not place every graha, so it cannot by itself show which houses are empty. The Janam Kundli report below does place the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, but not Rahu and Ketu: a house that looks empty on its chart may hold a node.

What This Page Does Not Do

It counts and describes. It does not read your chart, it does not say an empty house is good or bad for anyone, and it does not time any event. The figures for 2026 and 2027 describe the sky in those years, not any group of people. For the houses themselves, start from the houses hub or the guide to the 12 houses.

The Lords of Your Twelve Houses

The Janam Kundli report computes your lagna from your birth details and lists the twelve houses with their signs, their lords and where each lord sits, with a positions table for the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn. It gives no predictions, verdicts or remedies, and it does not place Rahu and Ketu or draw divisional charts.
