The 1st Lord in Each of the Twelve Houses
Houses here are whole signs: the ascendant’s sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on round the zodiac. The 1st lord is the graha that rules the sign falling in the 1st, so it changes with the ascendant — Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus, Mercury for Gemini, Moon for Cancer, Sun for Leo, Mercury for Virgo, Venus for Libra, Mars for Scorpio, Jupiter for Sagittarius, Saturn for Capricorn, Saturn for Aquarius and Jupiter for Pisces. In the Parashari method a bhava lord carries the matters of its house to wherever it sits; for the 1st those matters are personal identity and life direction.
