The 1st Lord in the 2nd House

The 1st lord in the 2nd house is the ruler of the 1st, the Lagna / Tanu Bhava, placed in the 2nd, the Dhana Bhava. The 1st is a kendra and a trikona and the 2nd in none of them. Which graha that lord is depends on the ascendant, so the table below answers for all twelve.

Counted from the 1st, the 2nd is the 2nd house; counted back from the 2nd, the 1st is the 12th, a dusthana position from it.

On the Parashari reading, in which a lord carries its house’s matters to wherever it sits, the 1st lord in the 2nd reads the 1st’s matters — personal identity and life direction — through the 2nd’s: savings and wealth, family of origin, speech and voice, and values. Across the twelve ascendants the 1st lord in the 2nd is in its own sign for Capricorn, in a friend's sign for Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces, in a neutral sign for Aries, Leo, Libra and Aquarius, in an enemy's sign for Gemini and debilitated for Sagittarius. The Sun and the Moon rule one sign each, so for Cancer and Leo, where one of them is the 1st lord, it rules no other house; for the other ten the last column gives the second house the 1st lord brings with it to the 2nd.

For Capricorn ascendant the 1st lord, Saturn, also rules the 2nd, so in the 2nd it sits in its own other sign, Aquarius.

The Reverse: the 2nd Lord in the 1st

Where the 2nd lord sits in the 1st in the same chart as the 1st lord in the 2nd, each lord occupies the other’s sign, an exchange the texts call parivartana. That is possible for eleven ascendants. For Capricorn (Saturn) one graha rules both the 1st and the 2nd, so there is nothing to exchange.
