Dispositor in Astrology: The Sign Lord, Its Chains and Its Loops

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Every graha sits in a sign, and every sign has a lord. That lord is the graha’s dispositor. Because the lord is itself a graha sitting in some sign, it has a dispositor too, and the links can be followed one after another until they stop. This page gives the definition, the twelve sign lords it rests on, the two ways a chain can end, and a count of how the sky’s chains ended on each of the 1,096 days from 1 Jan 2026 to 31 Dec 2028, worked from the site’s own ingress table.

Dispositor Meaning in Hindi and in Astrology (राशि स्वामी)

“Dispositor” is an English word from Western astrology, sometimes misspelt “depositor”. In Jyotish the same idea is the lord of the rashi a graha occupies: राशि स्वामी (rashi swami) or राशीश (rashish). With Mars in Gemini, the dispositor of Mars is Mercury, because Mercury is the lord of Gemini. With Mars in Aries, Mars is its own dispositor. The relation runs one way only: Mercury is the dispositor of Mars in Gemini, and that says nothing about where Mercury itself sits.

The Twelve Sign Lords

The lords below are the Parashari ones, the same assignment Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives and the one every chart on this site uses. Western astrology adds co-rulers for three signs: Pluto for Scorpio, Uranus for Aquarius, Neptune for Pisces. None of the three is a graha, and this page does not use them; the dispositor of a graha in Scorpio is Mars and nothing else.

Why the Sun and Moon Hold One Sign Each

Seven grahas share twelve signs. The Sun takes Leo and the Moon Cancer, and the other five take two signs each, which is exactly ten. The table has a mirror in it. Fold the zodiac along the line between Cancer and Leo, and every sign lands on another with the same lord, except that the fold line separates the two luminaries. Moving outward from that line, the pairs belong to Mercury, then Venus, then Mars, then Jupiter, then Saturn. The usual explanation in Jyotish teaching is that this is the order of the five by their periods around the zodiac, quickest nearest the luminaries and slowest farthest away; the arrangement itself is what the table shows.

  • Cancer and Leo: the Moon and the Sun
  • Gemini and Virgo: both Mercury
  • Taurus and Libra: both Venus
  • Aries and Scorpio: both Mars
  • Sagittarius and Pisces: both Jupiter
  • Capricorn and Aquarius: both Saturn

The count matters for chains. The Sun and the Moon each end a chain only from one sign, while each of the others can do so from either of two.

Following the Chain: A Final Dispositor or a Loop

Take any graha, move to its dispositor, then to that graha’s dispositor, and so on. Every sign lord is one of the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, so the walk never leaves those seven, and with only seven places to go it has to repeat within seven steps. The repeat can take two shapes:

  • A final dispositor. The walk reaches a graha in its own sign, which is its own dispositor, and stays there.
  • A loop. The walk reaches two or more grahas each sitting in the next one’s sign and goes round them. A loop of two, each graha in the other’s sign, is a parivartan, or sign exchange, which has its own page and its own table of dates.

A chart can hold more than one end at once: two grahas in their own signs give two final dispositors, each collecting its own branch. Tracing a whole chart’s chains to a single last graha is a technique that belongs more to modern practice, Western and Vedic, than to the Parashari texts; this site has not traced it to a classical source and treats the chains here as arithmetic.

Worked Example: The Sky on 1 Nov 2026

Jupiter entered Leo on 31 Oct 2026 by the site’s ingress table, so on 1 Nov 2026 its dispositor is the Sun, the lord of Leo. The full sky at 12:00 IST that day, graha by graha:

GrahaSignDispositorChainEnds at
SunLibraVenusSun → VenusVenus (own sign)
MoonCancerMoonMoonMoon (own sign)
MarsCancerMoonMars → MoonMoon (own sign)
MercuryLibraVenusMercury → VenusVenus (own sign)
JupiterLeoSunJupiter → Sun → VenusVenus (own sign)
VenusLibraVenusVenusVenus (own sign)
SaturnPiscesJupiterSaturn → Jupiter → Sun → VenusVenus (own sign)

Two grahas sit in their own signs, Venus in Libra and the Moon in Cancer, so the day has two final dispositors. Mars in Cancer belongs to the Moon’s branch; every other chain ends at Venus. Saturn’s chain is the longest, 3 steps: Saturn in Pisces to Jupiter, Jupiter in Leo to the Sun, the Sun in Libra to Venus.

The Chains on Six Dates

The same walk on six dates, 1 Nov 2026 among them, each taken at 12:00 IST and each at least three hours from any sign change in the table.

20 Mar 2028PiscesCapricornPiscesAquariusLeoAriesAriesthe Sun–Jupiter loop

On 1 Jan 2026 Jupiter in Gemini and Mercury in Sagittarius were each in the other’s sign, and all five remaining chains ran into that pair. On 9 Jul 2026 Mercury in Gemini was the only graha in its own sign, and Saturn’s chain to it was the longest in the whole three years: Saturn → Jupiter → Moon → Mars → Venus → Sun → Mercury, 6 steps. On 29 Jan 2027 six grahas formed a single ring, each in the sign of the next, with Mercury in Aquarius outside it and leading in through Saturn; it is the only day of the 1,096 with a six-graha loop.

Every Day from 2026 to 2028, Counted

The table below sorts all 1,096 days by how the seven chains ended. The Moon changes sign every two or three days, so the instant chosen matters at the edges; the counts are given at 12:00 IST and, for comparison, at 00:00 IST. They are counts of days of sky, not of people or of birth charts.

How the chains endedDays (12:00 IST)Days (00:00 IST)
Every chain ends at one graha in its own sign160165
Chains end at two or more grahas in their own signs, no loop186185
Every chain ends in one loop445450
At least one loop, plus another end (an own-sign graha or a second loop)305296

A single final dispositor was the least common outcome, 160 days at noon. A loop of some kind was present on 750 days, and a two-graha loop, a sign exchange somewhere among the seven, on 392. When there was a single final dispositor, it was one of these:

Sole final dispositorDaysDays in an own sign (any structure)
Mercury61263
Venus58327
Sun1893
Mars13121
Moon1085
Jupiter00
Saturn00

Jupiter and Saturn never appear, for a plain reason: across the table Saturn stays in Pisces and Aries and Jupiter moves from Gemini to Libra, so neither is ever in a sign of its own. That is a fact about these three years of sky and would be different in another stretch. The loops that recurred most, with the number of days each was present:

LoopGrahasDays (12:00 IST)
Jupiter–Mercury–Saturn3136
Jupiter–Mercury274
Mars–Sun272
Mercury–Venus261
Jupiter–Sun260
Jupiter–Moon255
Jupiter–Moon–Saturn353
Jupiter–Mars–Mercury330

A day with two loops counts once under each, so this column does not add up to the loop total above. Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn head the list because Saturn spent long stretches in Jupiter’s Pisces while Jupiter was in Mercury’s Gemini or Virgo; whenever Mercury was in Capricorn or Aquarius at the same time, the three closed into a ring.

Dispositor of Rahu and Ketu: Two Conventions

The nodes own no sign in the Parashari lordship table, and practice divides over what follows from that.

  • Sign lord only. Astrologers who give the nodes no sign of their own take the lord of the sign a node occupies as its dispositor, exactly as for any graha, and never count राहु or केतु as anyone’s dispositor. Under this reading the nodes hang off the chains and never end one.
  • Co-lordship. Another convention, recorded in this site’s graha table, makes Rahu a co-lord of Aquarius and Ketu a co-lord of Scorpio, acting as a second dispositor there beside Saturn and Mars. Under it, a graha in Aquarius has two dispositors, and Rahu in Aquarius sits in a sign it co-lords.

The page takes neither side. The node signs and their sign lords across the table are below. The rows come from the mean node, so only the date is given; a true-node ephemeris can place each change some way from these days.

FromRahu (mean node)Its sign lordKetuIts sign lord
1 Jan 2026 (table opens)AquariusSaturnLeoSun
5 Dec 2026CapricornSaturnCancerMoon
24 Jun 2028SagittariusJupiterGeminiMercury

For the nodes’ own dispositors, the two conventions part company only in the first row, while Rahu is in Aquarius; Ketu does not reach Scorpio in these three years. For the seven grahas, the co-lordship question comes up on any day one of them is in Aquarius or Scorpio, which at noon was 518 of the 1,096 days. Whether the nodes cast aspects is a separate question, covered on Rahu and Ketu drishti.

What This Page Does Not Do

It names dispositors and follows chains, and stops there. It does not say what a dispositor, a final dispositor or a loop means for a person, it reads no one’s chart, and it times nothing in a life. The counts describe the sky on these dates and are not a share of charts or of people. How a graha and its dispositor regard each other on the natural friendship scheme is on the planet friendship table; the same lordship applied to houses, the lord of each house and where it sits, is on the house lords page, and each graha’s own signs are on the nine planets page. The free kundli gives the Moon sign, the Sun sign, the lagna and the sign of Mars, enough to find those grahas’ dispositors from the table above.

Every Graha’s Sign Lord, From Your Birth Data

The Janam Kundli report gives the sign of each graha from the Sun to Saturn, that sign’s ruler and the graha’s relation to it, and where each house lord sits. It does not place Rahu or Ketu, and it gives no reading of a chain or a final dispositor.
