Which Sign Was Jupiter or Saturn In? Year by Year 1950–2050

Published 2026-10-28 | Live Pandit Ji

Jupiter moves on by about one sign a year and Saturn by one sign in about two and a half, so the year of birth goes most of the way to answering “which sign was Jupiter in” or “which sign was Saturn in”. The table below gives, for every year from 1950 to 2050, the sidereal sign each of the two held on 1 January and every change of sign in that year, dated in IST. If a change falls in your birth year, compare it with your birthday.

Two examples from the table. In 2014, Jupiter was in Gemini until 19 June 2014, when it entered Cancer; Saturn was in Libra until it entered Scorpio on 2 November 2014. All through 2008 Saturn was in Leo. Signs are Vedic (rashi, Lahiri ayanamsa); a western sign is this one or the next, because the ayanamsa across these years is 23.1° to 24.6°, under one sign.

Now and Through 2027

As this is published Jupiter is in Cancer and enters Leo on 31 October 2026. In 2027 it moves back into Cancer while retrograde on 25 January, returns to Leo on 26 June and enters Virgo on 26 November: three signs in one calendar year, the subject of the atichari Guru page. Saturn is in Pisces and enters Aries on 3 June 2027, then returns to Pisces on 20 October while retrograde; the Saturn transit 2027 page follows that year in detail.

Jupiter and Saturn by Year, 1950 to 2050

Each cell starts with the sign on 1 January (00:00 IST) and then follows every entry that year. “(R)” marks an entry made while retrograde. Both grahas move slowly, Saturn especially, so an entry close to midnight is printed as a span of dates; for Saturn near a station the span can cover three days. The scan behind the table, of the JPL DE421 ephemeris, matches all 150 entries in the site’s 2026–2028 ingress table to the minute.

Jupiter: One Sign a Year, With Exceptions

In 101 years Jupiter made 171 sign entries, 34 of them while retrograde. Only 1971, 1984 and 1997 passed without any change of sign, while 31 years held three entries; in every one of those, a retrograde carried Jupiter back over a boundary it had crossed and it then crossed again. Its longest stay was 396 days in Virgo, from 11 August 2016. Its shortest was a visit to Sagittarius from 29–30 Mar to 22–23 Apr 2019, 24 days, so anyone born in those weeks has a Sagittarius Jupiter while a birth a month either side does not.

Jupiter takes a little under twelve years to go round the zodiac, so the same date twelve years apart gives the same Jupiter sign on 86.2% of dates, against 14.3% at eleven years. Over 83 years the match is 94.5%. The degree-level version of the twelve-year return is on the Jupiter return page.

Saturn: Nearly Half the Years Have No Change

Saturn made only 85 entries in the century, and 46 of the 101 years have no change of sign at all, so for those birth years the year alone is enough. Three entries fall in 8 years: 1958, 1961, 1966, 1990, 1993, 2017, 2041 and 2049. Saturn’s longest stay was 842 days in Capricorn, from 7–8 Oct 1961 to 27 Jan 1964; its shortest, 9 days in Libra from 27–29 Jan to 5–7 Feb 2041, entered just before a station and left just after it.

The same date 29 years apart gives the same Saturn sign on 81.7% of dates, and 30 years apart on 77.9%, because its round of the zodiac takes about twenty-nine and a half years. Two rounds, 59 years, line up much better: 96.1%. Of its 85 entries, 17 are printed as spans: even at its normal pace Saturn takes hours to move half an arcminute, the allowance this table uses, and near a station more than a day, so an entry that close to midnight cannot be given one date. An almanac on a different ayanamsa can move Saturn’s dates by days or more.

Saturn’s Sign Is Not Sade Sati

A year in this table tells you where Saturn was, not whether a person was in Sade Sati. Sade Sati is counted from the Moon sign at birth: it is the stretch while Saturn passes through the sign before the Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the sign after. To find it you need the Moon sign, which turns on the birth time on many dates, and then Saturn’s sign against it. The Moon sign calculator finds the Moon sign from a date and time of birth, and the Sade Sati checker takes that Moon sign and says which of the three phases, if any, Saturn’s present sign puts it in. For a past year, this table gives Saturn’s side of the comparison.

Born on a Change Day

Outside the dates of Jupiter’s 171 and Saturn’s 85 entries, and their printed spans, the date alone settles both signs. For a birth on one of those dates, the sign and degree of each graha at the birth time are in the Janam Kundli report. What the texts set out for each placement is on the planet pages for Guru and Shani, each with a page for all twelve signs, and the faster grahas have their own birth-date tables: Mercury, Venus and Mars.

What This Page Does Not Give

No time of day for any entry, and no single date where an entry cannot be pinned to one. No reading of what Jupiter or Saturn in a sign meant for anyone born that year; a whole year’s births share these two signs, and a chart is read from far more than them. Every sign here is reckoned on the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Key Figures

  • Jupiter: 171 entries; no change in 1971, 1984 and 1997; three entries in 31 years; same sign 12 years apart on 86.2% of dates
  • Saturn: 85 entries; no change in 46 years; longest stay 842 days; same sign 59 years apart on 96.1% of dates
  • Next: Jupiter into Leo 31 October 2026; Saturn into Aries 3 June 2027
  • Sade Sati: counted from the Moon sign, so not readable from this table

Saturn Against Your Moon Sign

Pick your Moon sign and the Sade Sati checker reads Saturn’s present sign from an ephemeris and says whether it is in the 12th, 1st or 2nd from your Moon.
