Atichari Guru 2026–2028: Jupiter's Five-Month Sign Stays

Published 2026-10-27 | Live Pandit Ji

Jupiter takes 11.86 years to go round the zodiac, which is about one year in each sign on average: 361 days if the 4332-day cycle is shared out evenly. Hindi almanacs and gochar columns call it atichari (अतिचारी, from aticāra, “overstepping”) when it moves on into the next sign long before that year is up. The years from 2026 to 2028 are a clear run of it. Jupiter enters Cancer on 2 June 2026 and is already in Leo on 31 October 2026, 151 days later, and the same thing then happens to Leo and to Virgo.

This page lays out that motion from the site’s ephemeris tables and stops there. The word describes how fast Jupiter is moving through the signs; nothing below reads it as good or bad for anyone.

Every Jupiter Sign Change, 2026–2028

These are the eight Jupiter sign changes in the DE421 ingress table, which covers 2026 to 2028, and the seven spells between them. Dates are IST and given by the day.

SignEnteredLeftDays
Cancer2 June 202631 October 2026151
Leo31 October 202625 January 202786
Cancer (backed in, retrograde)25 January 202726 June 2027152
Leo26 June 202726 November 2027153
Virgo26 November 202728 February 202894
Leo (backed in, retrograde)28 February 202824 July 2028147
Virgo24 July 202826 December 2028155

Two spells stand out as the shortest: 86 days for the first look at Leo and 94 for the first look at Virgo. Every other spell is about five months. None comes near a year. The last row ends with Jupiter crossing into Libra on 26 December 2028, where the table stops.

The Pattern: Touch, Back Out, Re-enter

Leo and Virgo are each reached twice in the table. Jupiter crosses into the new sign while moving forward, turns retrograde inside it 43 and 47 days later respectively, backs over the line into the sign it came from, turns direct there, and crosses forward again. The second crossing is the one that holds. For Leo: first crossing 31 October 2026, retrograde station 13 December 2026, back in Cancer from 25 January 2027, direct station 13 April 2027, and Leo for good from 26 June 2027, 238 days after the first crossing. For Virgo the sequence is the same: first crossing 26 November 2027, retrograde 12 January 2028, back in Leo from 28 February 2028, direct 14 May 2028, and Virgo for good from 24 July 2028, 241 days after the first.

That is where the “short stay” comes from. Once Jupiter has entered a sign for good, its next forward crossing arrives within months:

  • Cancer: entered 2 June 2026, Leo first reached 31 October 2026, 151 days
  • Leo: entered 26 June 2027, Virgo first reached 26 November 2027, 153 days
  • Virgo: entered 24 July 2028, Libra first reached 26 December 2028, 155 days

All three runs are under half of the 361-day average, and each is a little longer than the one before. Counted by sign rather than by run, the speed is not uniform. Leo holds it for 386 days across three separate spells, which is more than the average year. What is unusual is that those days are cut up, so a sign is entered, left and entered again.

Every Retrograde Loop Since 2025 Crosses a Sign Line

The site’s retrograde table runs from 2024 to 2031 and holds seven Jupiter loops. The first, 2024–25, starts and ends inside Taurus. Each of the other six starts within five degrees of the beginning of a sign and backs about ten degrees, which takes it over the boundary into the previous sign:

RetrogradeDirectTurns back atTurns forward at
9 October 20244 February 2025Taurus 27.1°Taurus 17.0°
11 November 202511 March 2026Cancer 0.9°Gemini 20.9°
13 December 202613 April 2027Leo 2.8°Cancer 22.8°
12 January 202814 May 2028Virgo 3.3°Leo 23.3°
10 February 202914 June 2029Libra 3.2°Virgo 23.3°
13 March 203015 July 2030Scorpio 3.4°Libra 23.5°
15 April 203116 August 2031Sagittarius 4.7°Scorpio 24.8°

Six boundary-crossing loops in a row, through six consecutive signs from Cancer to Sagittarius, is the kind of run the atichari label describes. The table also shows why it happens. From 2025 on, each loop starts about a sign further on than the one before, so as long as the loops keep starting just past a boundary, each one will also cross back over it. In 2024 the loop started 27 degrees into its sign, with room to spare, and no crossing followed. Only the 2026–27 row has both stations taken from the DE421 kernel. The others rest wholly or partly on the site’s planetary series, which can put a station a few hours away from the kernel’s, so read their dates to the day and their degrees to the nearest one. The retrograde pages, starting with Jupiter retrograde 2026–27, cover each loop on its own.

Faster Than Average, by How Much

Set the loops aside and take the net movement. From the Cancer entry of 2 June 2026 to the first Libra crossing of 26 December 2028 is 938 days for three signs, or 313 days a sign against the 361-day average. Over a whole cycle Jupiter moves about 0.083° a day. At each forward crossing in the table it is moving at 0.12° to 0.19° a day, which is how a five-month run can cover a whole sign.

The Signs Involved

The three signs Jupiter shuttles between in these years carry different standing for it in the classical scheme. Cancer is its exaltation sign, so the 151 days from 2 June and the 152 days of the 2027 return are both spells of an exalted Jupiter. Leo belongs to the Sun, which the table lists as a friend of Jupiter. Virgo and Libra belong to Mercury and Venus, both listed as enemies. These are sign-level facts, the same whichever chart they fall in. Which house each sign is in depends on the chart, and the transit pages do that count for each Moon sign: Jupiter in Leo from October 2026, every Jupiter date in 2027 and Jupiter in Virgo.

What This Page Does Not Claim

Gochar columns attach predictions to an atichari year. Those are readings rather than measurements, and this page leaves them out. None of the site’s muhurat rules applies an atichari test either. What a retrograde graha means inside a birth chart is a separate question, covered in vakri grah in the kundli. Jupiter’s three aspects, which move with it through each spell, are in Guru drishti. To see whether Jupiter, or any graha, was retrograde on a date that matters to you, use the retrograde checker.
