Vakri Grah Kya Hota Hai: Retrograde Planet in Kundli

Vakri Grah: Backward Motion as Seen From Earth (वक्री ग्रह)

वक्री (vakri) means “crooked” or “turned back”, and a vakri graha is one whose position against the stars is sliding backwards through the zodiac instead of forwards. Nothing in space reverses. The backward drift is apparent: it comes from watching one moving planet from another, the Earth, and it falls out of the orbital geometry without being added to it. The site’s ephemeris code defines it the plain way, as a graha whose geocentric longitude is decreasing from one day to the next.

The moment the drift turns round is called a station. A planet goes from direct to vakri at one station and back to direct at the next, and the stretch between the two is its retrograde window. Close to a station the motion is so slow that the exact day can differ by one between sources, which matters for a birth that falls right on one.

Which grahas can be vakri? The site’s retrograde table holds windows for exactly five of them: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The Sun and the Moon never appear in it, because neither is ever seen to move backwards, so a kundli never marks either one as retrograde.

Rahu and Ketu are a separate case. The table gives them spans rather than windows, with the note that they are retrograde permanently, and every node row in the ingress table is flagged retrograde with the same steady daily motion of -0.0529°, a negative number, meaning backwards. Those rows are the mean node, which is a formula rather than an observed position, and the same file says so. The statement “the nodes are always vakri” is a statement about that mean node. The site does not tabulate the true node, and this page says nothing about it.

How Often Each Graha Is Vakri, 2024-2031

The retrograde table covers 2024 to 2031, which is 2,922 calendar dates. For each of the five, the table below counts the windows that start in that range, gives the shortest and longest gap between the two stations, and counts the dates the retrograde checker would show the planet as vakri, both station dates included. One window runs past the end of the range (Saturn’s, from 5 October 2031), and its dates are counted only up to 31 December 2031.

GrahaWindows starting 2024-2031Days between the stationsDates vakriShare of the 2,922 dates
Mercury (Budh, बुध)2520 to 2458219.9%
Venus (Shukra, शुक्र)541 to 432167.4%
Mars (Mangal, मंगल)476 to 8132011.0%
Jupiter (Guru, गुरु)7118 to 12386029.4%
Saturn (Shani, शनि)8134 to 1391,04935.9%

Two columns pull in opposite directions. Mercury has by far the most windows, 25 of them, but each lasts only 20 to 24 days, so its share of dates is 19.9%. Saturn has eight windows, roughly one a year, and each one runs 134 to 139 days, so Saturn is vakri on 35.9% of the dates, the largest share of the five; Jupiter follows at 29.4%. Venus has the fewest dates, 7.4%, from five windows of about six weeks. Mars sits between, with four long windows and whole calendar years with none.

Taken together, 786 of the 2,922 dates (26.9%) have none of the five retrograde, and on no date in the range are more than three of them retrograde at once. Read these numbers for what they are: shares of time in the sky, over eight particular years. They are not shares of people, they are not a count of anyone’s chart, and they do not make a vakri Venus “rarer” or more significant in a kundli than a vakri Saturn. Each planet’s own windows, date by date, are on its page under the retrograde planets hub, for example Saturn retrograde dates.

Vakri Grah Kaise Pata Kare: The R Mark in a Kundli

Kundli software marks a vakri graha beside its abbreviation. The usual forms are R, Rx or (R) in English charts and व or वक्री in Hindi ones; the kundli symbols page sets these out with the other marks a chart carries. The mark records one fact about the instant of birth: that graha’s longitude was decreasing. It carries no grade or degree of “how vakri”.

On this site the Janam Kundli report shows it three ways. Its North Indian chart writes “(R)” after the graha in its house, so a vakri Saturn in the lagna reads “As Sa(R)”. Its positions table has a column headed “Retro” that holds “R” for each graha retrograde at birth, and each graha’s own paragraph says in words that it was retrograde at birth. The free kundli tool shows only one graha’s position, Mars, and prints “vakri” beside it when Mars was retrograde at birth. Neither the report nor the tool marks Rahu or Ketu, since the report engine does not compute the nodes for a birth.

Without a chart, the birth date alone settles it for any date in the table’s range except a station date. The retrograde checker shows which of the five are retrograde today and lists every window from 2024 to 2031 year by year, with the sidereal signs each one passes through; it does not take a birth date as input, so the reader matches the date against the schedule. As a worked example, a chart cast for 26 October 2026, the day this page was published, would mark Saturn, Venus and Mercury as vakri, with Rahu in Aquarius and Ketu in Leo on the mean-node reckoning. Mercury’s window there had opened only two days earlier, on 24 October 2026. A birth on a station date itself is the one case a date cannot settle: the birth time decides it, and ephemerides can put the station on either side of midnight. For a birth before 2024 the checker’s table does not reach.

Vakri Grah ke Fal: What the Tradition Reads, and Where It Disagrees

The one point the classical scheme states outright concerns strength, not results. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra counts cheshta bala, strength from motion, as one of the six components of shadbala, and in that scheme a graha in retrograde motion scores well on it; the site’s planet table, in its entry for Mercury, uses the phrase “chesta bala, the strength of motion” for this. The shadbala page lists cheshta bala among the six and notes that the Sun and the Moon, which never turn retrograde, are handled differently. That is a score inside one strength system. It is not, on its own, a statement of what a vakri graha brings.

On what a vakri graha brings, practitioners do not agree, and the page reports the positions without choosing:

  • Intensified. One line of readers follows the cheshta bala logic through: a strong graha’s significations show more fully, so a vakri benefic is read as more benefic and a vakri malefic as more malefic.
  • Delayed or repeated. Others read the backward motion as a return over ground already covered, and look for a graha’s matters to arrive late or by a second attempt. This reading leans on the sky picture rather than on any count in the texts.
  • Turned inward. A third reading, met mainly in modern writing, treats retrogression as the graha’s significations showing in reflection rather than in outward event.

The three can lead to opposite readings of the same placement, and nothing in the site’s tables decides between them. A reader who sees “retrograde Saturn in birth chart” explained with a single confident consequence is reading one of these schools, whether or not the school is named. The page draws no outcome from a vakri graha for marriage, work, money or health, and gives no age at which anything happens.

Vakri at Birth vs a Retrograde Transit

Two different things share the word. A natal vakri graha is a fixed feature of one chart: the R stays in that kundli for good, whatever the sky does afterwards. A retrograde transit is the sky’s own calendar, the same for everyone on the same dates, and it is what the retrograde hub, the per-planet pages such as Mercury retrograde and Jupiter retrograde, and the 2026 retrograde dates page list. A transit window that falls later in life does not add an R to a birth chart, and a natal R does not make a reader’s transit windows different from anyone else’s; practitioners who combine the two do so by their own method, which this page does not set out.

What This Page Does Not Do

It reads no one’s chart and does not say which grahas were vakri at the reader’s birth. It times no event, offers no remedy for a vakri graha, and treats none of the interpretive schools above as correct. The counts are counts of dates in 2024-2031, read off the retrograde table, and say nothing about how common a vakri graha is among people. In Hindi: वक्री ग्रह क्या है: कुंडली में वक्री ग्रह कैसे पहचानें.

See Which of Your Grahas Were Vakri

The Janam Kundli report computes the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn for your birth and marks each one that was retrograde, in the chart as (R) and in the positions table beside sign, degree, nakshatra, house and sign-level dignity. It does not compute Rahu and Ketu for a birth, and it contains no predictions, verdicts or remedies.
