How Long Does Each Planet Stay in a Sign? 2026-2028

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

A quick answer gives one round figure per graha. This page measures instead. Every number below is read off the site’s own sign-change table, which is computed from the JPL DE421 ephemeris for the sidereal zodiac and covers 2026, 2027 and 2028. The measured stays turn out to be anything but round: the same graha can sit in one sign for a fortnight and in the next for two months.

Two conventions run through the page. A complete stay is one whose entry and exit both fall inside the three years; a stay that was already running on 1 January 2026, or is still running at the end of 2028, is never given a length, because the table does not hold its other end. And lengths are the elapsed time between the two table entries, rounded to the nearest day (the Moon’s to the nearest hour), so subtracting the two printed dates can come out a day different. Dates are given as days only.

Kaun Sa Grah Ek Rashi Mein Kitne Din Rahata Hai? (ग्रह एक राशि में कितने दिन रहता है)

The short answer, graha by graha. The middle column counts sign changes in each of the three years; “back” counts the ones that went into the sign behind, which for the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn only happens around a retrograde station.

GrahaSign changes 2026 / 2027 / 2028Shortest complete stayLongest complete stay
Sun (सूर्य)12 / 12 / 1229 days31 days
Moon (चन्द्र)160 / 160 / 16147 hours61 hours
Mercury (बुध)14 (1 back) / 16 (2 back) / 1314 days69 days
Venus (शुक्र)12 (1 back) / 15 / 1017 days126 days
Mars (मंगल)8 / 7 (1 back) / 838 days117 days
Jupiter (गुरु)2 / 3 (1 back) / 3 (1 back)86 days155 days
Saturn (शनि)0 / 2 (1 back) / 1126 days139 days
Rahu (राहु)1 / 0 / 1566 daysthe same single stay
Ketu (केतु)1 / 0 / 1566 daysthe same single stay

Rahu and Ketu have no “back” figure because every one of their rows is a move into the sign behind: that is the direction the nodes run through the zodiac in this table, not a loop. The sections below explain the spread in each row.

The Moon: 47 to 61 Hours in a Sign

The Moon changes sign 160 times in 2026, 160 in 2027 and 161 in 2028, and never moves backwards. Its 480 complete stays run from 47 to 61 hours, a band of more than half a day. Counting twelve sign changes in a row, the Moon takes between 27.2 and 27.5 days to come back to the sign it started from.

Stays this short are counted in days, which is how the Chandrashtama days page works: it lists every stretch the Moon spends in the 8th sign from each rashi. The Moon sign calculator finds which sign it was in at a given birth.

The Sun: 29 to 31 Days, Twelve Changes a Year

The Sun is the steady one. It changes sign twelve times in every year of the table, never goes back, and stays the same length of time in a given sign each year to within a couple of hours. What varies is the sign, which is why the table below gives one decimal: six signs round to the same whole number. Its longest stay is in Gemini and its shortest in Sagittarius, and the speed column shows why: the table records the Sun’s daily motion at each entry, and that motion is lowest when it enters Cancer and highest when it enters Capricorn. A slower Sun takes longer to cross the same thirty degrees.

SignDays the Sun stays (one decimal)Motion on entry in 2027 (°/day)
Aries (मेष)30.90.980
Taurus (वृषभ)31.30.964
Gemini (मिथुन)31.40.955
Cancer (कर्क)31.30.954
Leo (सिंह)31.00.961
Virgo (कन्या)30.50.975
Libra (तुला)30.00.992
Scorpio (वृश्चिक)29.61.007
Sagittarius (धनु)29.41.017
Capricorn (मकर)29.51.019
Aquarius (कुम्भ)29.91.011
Pisces (मीन)30.40.997

From one entry into a sign to the next entry into the same sign, the Sun takes 365.2 to 365.3 days in this table. The dates of each entry are on the Sun transit 2027 page.

Mercury and Venus: Retrograde Stretches the Stay

Mercury’s complete stays with no station inside run from 14 to 24 days. The table holds nine Mercury retrograde stations, and they work out in one of two ways. In six of them, Mercury turns retrograde and turns direct again inside the same sign, and each of those stays runs 66 to 69 days. In the other three, the backward motion carries it over the line into the previous sign, which is where the three back-moves in the summary come from.

The longest of all is the Taurus stay of 27 April 2028 to 5 July 2028, 69 days, with the retrograde station on 21 May 2028 and the direct station on 14 June 2028 both inside it. The Mercury transit 2027 page has the year’s entries in order.

Venus is the cleaner case. In 2027, a year with no Venus station at all, every stay that begins in the year lasts 24 to 28 days. Its longest stay is in Taurus, 28 March 2028 to 1 August 2028: 126 days, with the retrograde station on 11 May 2028 and the direct station on 23 June 2028 inside it. The 2026 loop goes the other way. Venus turns retrograde in Libra on 3 October 2026, backs into Virgo on 6 November 2026, turns direct there on 14 November 2026 and re-enters Libra on 22 November 2026. That 17-day fragment of Virgo is Venus’s shortest complete stay, and the same retrograde stretched the Libra stays either side of it to 64 and 40 days. Every station date is on the retrograde planets page, and the retrograde checker answers it for a single date.

Mars: The Leo and Cancer Loop of 2026-2027

Outside one loop, every complete Mars stay runs from 38 days (in Aquarius in 2028) to 55 days. The loop is a single retrograde. Mars enters Leo on 12 November 2026, turns retrograde there on 10 January 2027 and backs into Cancer on 10 March 2027, a 117-day stay. It turns direct in Cancer on 1 April 2027, spends 47 days there in all, and is back in Leo from 26 April 2027 to 5 July 2027, another 70 days. That one loop accounts for the 2027 back-move and for Mars’s two longest stays. The Mars transit 2027 page sets the year out month by month.

Jupiter: Five Signs in Three Years, With Two Returns

Jupiter’s run is short enough to print whole. It visits five signs in the three years, and twice a retrograde station takes it back into the sign it had just left.

Jupiter inDatesLengthStation inside
GeminiAlready there on 1 January 2026; to 2 June 2026not complete in the tabledirect, 11 March 2026
Cancer2 June 2026 to 31 October 2026151 daysnone
Leo31 October 2026 to 25 January 202786 daysretrograde, 13 December 2026
Cancer25 January 2027 to 26 June 2027152 daysdirect, 13 April 2027
Leo26 June 2027 to 26 November 2027154 daysnone
Virgo26 November 2027 to 28 February 202894 daysretrograde, 12 January 2028
Leo28 February 2028 to 24 July 2028147 daysdirect, 14 May 2028
Virgo24 July 2028 to 26 December 2028155 daysnone
LibraFrom 26 December 2028; still there at the end of 2028not complete in the tablenone

The shortest complete stay, 86 days in Leo, is the first visit before the retrograde return to Cancer on 25 January 2027; the longest, 155 days in Virgo, is the stay after the second loop. Three years show five of the twelve signs, so the table cannot show a full Jupiter round, and this page does not quote one. The Jupiter transit 2027 page covers the Cancer and Leo months in detail.

Saturn: Pisces Until 3 June 2027, Then Two Crossings

Saturn was already in Pisces on 1 January 2026, so its Pisces stay has no start in the table and no length on this page. It enters Aries on 3 June 2027, turns retrograde there on 9 August 2027, and goes back into Pisces on 20 October 2027 after 139 days. It turns direct in Pisces on 24 December 2027, re-enters Aries on 23 February 2028 after 126 more days, and is still there at the end of 2028. Those two are Saturn’s only complete stays, and each has a station inside it: the retrograde that takes Saturn back into Pisces is what holds the first Aries stay to 139 days.

Saturn moves slowly enough near these crossings that the table marks every one of its sign changes as too slow to publish with a clock time, so only the day is given. The Saturn transit 2027 page counts the same dates from each Moon sign.

Rahu and Ketu: One Complete Stay of 566 Days

Rahu and Ketu change sign on the same day, always into the sign behind. Rahu was in Aquarius and Ketu in Leo when the table opens; they move to Capricorn and Cancer on 5 December 2026 and to Sagittarius and Gemini on 24 June 2028. That gives one complete stay, 566 days, and two partial ones. The node rows are mean-node values, a formula rather than an observed position, so both dates and the 566 are soft by up to a day. The Rahu-Ketu transit page follows the move through each Moon sign.

Kitne Din Mein Rashi Parivartan: The Round of Twelve

The table measures a full round of all twelve signs for two grahas only: the Moon, in 27.2 to 27.5 days, and the Sun, in 365.2 to 365.3 days. Mercury, Venus and Mars do go all the way round within three years, but their retrograde loops make each round a different length, so this page gives their stays rather than an average. Jupiter visits five signs, Saturn two and each node three; a three-year table cannot show their full rounds, and figures quoted for those from outside the table are not checked here.

How Long Does Each Planet Stay in a House?

In a gochar reading of the Parashari kind, a transiting graha’s house is counted whole-sign from the Moon sign, and some readers count from the lagna sign as well. On either count the house is a whole sign, so a graha stays in a transit house exactly as long as it stays in the sign. Take a Moon sign of Aries: Jupiter’s Leo stay of 26 June 2027 to 26 November 2027 is the 5th house from it for those 154 days, and the same stay is a different house for every other rashi. The Chandra Bala page sets out the counting from the Moon sign. The house a graha occupied at birth is a different question: it is fixed in the birth chart, and no stay in this table changes it.

What This Page Does Not Do

Every figure here is a length of time in a sign. The page does not read any stay, say what a graha in a sign or house will bring, or time anything in a reader’s life by it. It gives no clock time for any sign change and no stay lengths beyond 2028.

Where the Grahas Stood at Your Birth

The Janam Kundli report places the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn by sign, degree, house and retrograde state at your birth, with the Vimshottari dasha dates. It is a birth chart, not a transit tracker: it does not follow how long any graha stays in a sign after birth, and it does not place Rahu and Ketu.
