Parivartan Yoga: Sign Exchange, Maha, Khala and Dainya
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Each in the Other’s Sign (परिवर्तन योग)
Parivartan means exchange. Two grahas form it when each sits in a sign the other rules: Mercury in Libra, ruled by Venus, while Venus is in Virgo, ruled by Mercury, is the pattern. In a birth chart those two signs are two houses, so the exchange is also an exchange between the lords of two houses, and that is how the classical texts sort it.
The site’s sign table gives every sign a single ruler, and this page uses only that. Rahu and Ketu rule no sign there; the planet table notes that Rahu co-lords Aquarius and Ketu co-lords Scorpio in some reckonings, but that co-lordship is not used here, so no exchange below involves a node.
Maha, Khala and Dainya: The Three Classes
Phaladeepika sorts parivartana by the two houses whose lords exchange. If either house is a dusthana, the 6th, 8th and 12th in the site’s house table, it is Dainya. If neither is a dusthana but one is the 3rd, it is Khala. Every other pair, both houses drawn from the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th, is Maha. There are 66 pairs of houses in all, and counted this way 28 are Maha, 8 Khala and 30 Dainya.
The 3rd is the house that needs a separate rule. The site’s house table lists it as an upachaya and marks it “dusthana in some traditions”, because it is the 8th from the 8th. Under a scheme that counted the 3rd a dusthana, its eight Khala pairs would fall into Dainya; Phaladeepika keeps them apart, and this page does not choose between the two.
| Class | Pairs | House pairs |
|---|---|---|
| Maha | 28 | 1-2, 1-4, 1-5, 1-7, 1-9, 1-10, 1-11, 2-4, 2-5, 2-7, 2-9, 2-10, 2-11, 4-5, 4-7, 4-9, 4-10, 4-11, 5-7, 5-9, 5-10, 5-11, 7-9, 7-10, 7-11, 9-10, 9-11, 10-11 |
| Khala | 8 | 1-3, 2-3, 3-4, 3-5, 3-7, 3-9, 3-10, 3-11 |
| Dainya | 30 | 1-6, 1-8, 1-12, 2-6, 2-8, 2-12, 3-6, 3-8, 3-12, 4-6, 4-8, 4-12, 5-6, 5-8, 5-12, 6-7, 6-8, 6-9, 6-10, 6-11, 6-12, 7-8, 7-12, 8-9, 8-10, 8-11, 8-12, 9-12, 10-12, 11-12 |
Not every pair can exchange in every chart, because a graha that rules both houses has nothing to swap with. Five grahas rule two signs each, so every ascendant has five such pairs, and 61 of the 66 are open to it. The lord-by-lord detail for any pair, ascendant by ascendant, is on the house lords pages.
The 6th and 8th, and the 2nd and 12th
Both pairs are Dainya in Phaladeepika’s scheme, and both are possible for all twelve ascendants, since the two signs never share a ruler. The 6-8 exchange puts each dusthana lord in the other dusthana, which is also the placement the Viparita Raja rule looks for; that rule and its three named forms are on the Vipreet Raja yoga page, and this page does not rank one reading above the other. The 2-12 exchange is Dainya through the 12th alone. Each placement is worked through for every ascendant on the 6th lord in the 8th and the 2nd lord in the 12th.
Every Exchange in the Sky, 2026 to 2028
Testing every pair from the Sun to Saturn against the ingress table gives the list below. None lasts more than about a month. Late 2026 has three in a row: Mercury and Venus from 6 November 2026, then the Sun and Mars from 16 November 2026, and the Sun and Jupiter from the day that one ends, 16 December 2026, to 14 January 2027. The Sun-Mercury, Sun-Saturn, Mars-Mercury, Mars-Jupiter, Mars-Venus, Mercury-Saturn, Jupiter-Venus, Jupiter-Saturn and Venus-Saturn pairs do not exchange at any point in the table.
| Pair and signs | Dates | Length | Dignity in the planet table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Gemini | Start of the table (1 January 2026) to 17 January 2026 | at least 16 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
| Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter in Gemini | 11 April 2026 to 30 April 2026 | 19 days | Mercury debilitated |
| Mercury in Taurus, Venus in Gemini | 15 May 2026 to 29 May 2026 | 14 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
| Mercury in Libra, Venus in Virgo | 6 November 2026 to 22 November 2026 | 17 days | Venus debilitated |
| Sun in Scorpio, Mars in Leo | 16 November 2026 to 16 December 2026 | 30 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
| Sun in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Leo | 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027 | 29 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
| Sun in Aries, Mars in Leo | 26 April 2027 to 15 May 2027 | 19 days | Sun exalted |
| Mercury in Libra, Venus in Virgo | 21 September 2027 to 3 October 2027 | 12 days | Venus debilitated |
| Mercury in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Virgo | 15 December 2027 to 2 January 2028 | 19 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
| Mars in Aquarius, Saturn in Aries | 23 February 2028 to 12 March 2028 | 18 days | Saturn debilitated |
| Sun in Pisces, Jupiter in Leo | 14 March 2028 to 13 April 2028 | 30 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
| Sun in Libra, Venus in Leo | 17 October 2028 to 23 October 2028 | 6 days | Sun debilitated |
| Mercury in Libra, Venus in Virgo | 30 October 2028 to 16 November 2028 | 17 days | Venus debilitated |
| Sun in Scorpio, Mars in Leo | 16 November 2028 to 8 December 2028 | 23 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
| Mercury in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Virgo | 6 December 2028 to 26 December 2028 | 20 days | neither exalted nor debilitated |
A birth inside one of these stretches has the exchange whatever the hour; which two houses it links depends on the lagna. Some exchanges carry a debilitated graha, and the rules for when a debilitation is read as cancelled are on the Neecha Bhanga page. Kendra and trikona lords, which make up several of the Maha pairs, are the subject of Kendra-Trikona Raja yoga.
The Moon’s Exchanges
The Moon rules Cancer alone, so it exchanges with a graha only while that graha is in Cancer and the Moon is in one of the graha’s signs. The Moon reaches those signs every month; the limit is the other graha. Measured as clock time, the Moon-Jupiter exchange holds for 7.7% of 2026 and 7.3% of 2027, the largest of the set, because Jupiter spends long spells in Cancer in these years. The Sun, Mars, Mercury and Venus give 1.1%, 2.6%, 1.6% and 1.2% of 2026 respectively, and the Moon and Saturn never exchange, since Saturn is never in Cancer in the table. These are fractions of the sky’s time, not counts of people born with the yoga.
Parivartan in the Navamsa
Astrologers who work with divisional charts also look for exchanges in the navamsa, the D9. Everything on this page is computed from the rasi chart, the D1, and the site’s sign tables hold no navamsa positions for the grahas, so nothing here says whether a D9 exchange exists for any date. How the navamsa is built is explained in the D9 navamsa chart, and a full chart with its divisional placements needs the exact birth time.
Reading an Exchange
Astrologers who use the yoga read it through the two houses whose lords have exchanged, and the class name is a first sorting, not a verdict. This page states which pairs exist, how they are classed, and when the sky held them, and gives no outcome for any of them. The other combinations, with how often each comes up, are gathered in the kundli yoga list. In Hindi: परिवर्तन योग: राशि परिवर्तन, महा, खल और दैन्य.
House Lords in Your Own Chart
The Janam Kundli report works out your lagna, the lord of each house and the sign it occupies, so any exchange between two lords can be read straight off it, along with your dasha periods. The report does not grade an exchange or forecast from one. For a quick chart, try the free kundli tool.
