Vasumati Yoga: Benefics in the Upachaya Houses

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

The Definition (वसुमती योग)

Vasumati yoga is a placement rule. Astrologers who use it look at the benefic grahas, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, and ask whether they stand in the upachaya houses, which the site’s house table gives as the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. Most accounts count those houses from the Moon’s sign; some count them from the lagna as well, and a few accept either. Houses are whole signs here, as everywhere on the site, so the 3rd from a Moon in Aries is simply Gemini.

The house table glosses an upachaya as a house where malefics gain, so Vasumati is the less familiar use of these houses: it asks about benefics in them instead. Two overlaps are worth knowing. The 6th is both an upachaya and a dusthana in that table, the only house carrying both labels, alongside the 8th and 12th as the remaining dusthanas. The 3rd is not counted a dusthana by the site’s classifier, though the table notes that some traditions treat it as one.

On which grahas count: the site’s planet table lists Jupiter and Venus as benefic, while Mercury’s entry reads “Neutral — takes on its company”, meaning it takes the character of whatever it sits with. The Vasumati lists nonetheless count Mercury with the other two, and this page follows them without settling the question of Mercury’s company.

What the Name Means, and What This Page Leaves Out

Vasu is the Sanskrit for wealth or goods, and vasumati is “one possessed of vasu”; the classical authors who list the yoga attach it, accordingly, to wealth. That is the meaning of the name and nothing further is taken from it here. The page draws no outcome from Vasumati, full or partial, and no chart state described on it is a reason to take a financial position of any kind. What follows is how often the sky meets the rule.

How Often It Holds, Counted From the Moon

Cutting the ingress table at every sign change of the Moon and the three benefics, all three sit in upachayas from the Moon for 5.2% of the clock hours of 2026 and 4.2% of 2027, roughly one hour in twenty. These are shares of time in the sky, not of people or of births. Looser readings that accept fewer than three give very different figures, so each count is shown.

Exactly two21.3%22.7%
Two or more26.5%27.0%
At least one68.8%69.6%
None31.2%30.4%

A version satisfied by a single benefic holds for 68.8% of 2026 and 69.6% of 2027, which is over two thirds of the year and separates very little. Two or more brings it to about a quarter. Only the full form, with all three, is a narrow condition, and that is the one the figures on the rest of this page describe.

Beside Adhi Yoga

Adhi yoga uses the same three benefics but a different set of houses from the Moon, the 6th, 7th and 8th. Measured the same way, its full form holds for 6.7% of 2026 and 5.4% of 2027, a little more than full Vasumati in each year. The two lists share one house, the 6th, so one benefic there counts toward both lists at once. The two full forms can hold together only when all three benefics are in the 6th from the Moon, which the table shows for 0.2% of 2026 and 0.7% of 2027. The Adhi yoga page sets out its own figures.

Why the Sun’s Position Matters

Two of the three benefics never stray far from the Sun. Over the whole table, 2026 to 2028, Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun’s sign and Venus never more than two. Only Jupiter moves independently. So the full yoga needs the Sun itself to be in or close to the upachaya band counted from the Moon, with Mercury and Venus carried along beside it.

The table below adds up the full-Vasumati time of 2026 and 2027 by the Sun’s house from the Moon. The Sun is in the 10th for the largest part, and it never stands in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th or 12th during those hours. About two thirds of the days have the Sun in an upachaya itself; the rest have it a sign or two away, with Mercury and Venus reaching across.

Counted From the Lagna, 2026 to 2028

The lagna-based form leaves the Moon out, so it depends only on the three planets and can be measured for all three table years. Holding the lagna fixed, each cell is the share of the year with Mercury, Jupiter and Venus all in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from it. In 2026 five lagnas never meet it, in 2027 five, in 2028 six; no lagna, though, is at zero in all three years. The highest cells are Virgo in 2026 at 16.5%, Libra in 2027 at 10.4% and Pisces in 2028 at 18.8%. A birth time is needed to know the lagna, which the free kundli tool works out.

Month by Month From the Moon, 2026 and 2027

The full Moon-based form comes in bursts. In 2026, five months have none of it at all, and in 2027 seven do, while the busiest months are February 2026 at 16.4% and August 2027 at 21.9%. The pattern follows the Sun. In the busier months the Sun, its two companions and Jupiter are placed so that, somewhere on the Moon’s monthly circuit, there are signs from which Mercury, Jupiter and Venus all fall in upachayas; in the empty months the Moon never passes through one.

To check the Moon-based form for yourself you need only the Moon’s sign and the signs of the three benefics; the Moon sign calculator gives the first. Jupiter’s other Moon-counted yoga, with Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, is measured on the Gajakesari yoga page, the wider family of wealth-named combinations is listed on dhan yoga in the kundli, and the list of kundli yogas and how common they are sets Vasumati beside the others.
