Tara Bala Chart: The Nine Taras for All 27 Nakshatras
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
What Tara Bala Is
Tara Bala, or tarabalam in the south, is the strength of a day’s nakshatra counted from your own birth nakshatra, the janma nakshatra the Moon held when you were born. The count is sorted into nine taras, and the muhurta manuals use the result to decide whether a given day suits a beginning. It is the nakshatra half of a pair. The other half, Chandra Bala, counts signs from your Moon sign, and the convention the site follows checks the two together rather than either alone.
The same nine taras appear in kundli matching, as Tara koota, where the count runs between two people’s birth stars instead of from a birth star to a day. That use is covered on the Tara koota page. This page is about the daily use.
The Nine Taras, Janma to Ati-Mitra
The names, the glosses and the three verdicts below are the ones in the site’s muhurta table, quoted as the convention holds them.
| Count | Tara | What the name stands for | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1, 10, 19 | Janma | the birth star — intensifies rather than helps | mixed |
| 2, 11, 20 | Sampat | wealth; the strongest for anything undertaken for gain | auspicious |
| 3, 12, 21 | Vipat | danger and loss; not chosen for beginnings or travel | avoided |
| 4, 13, 22 | Kshema | well-being; for what needs to hold rather than to win | auspicious |
| 5, 14, 23 | Pratyari | obstruction; avoided where another party must consent | avoided |
| 6, 15, 24 | Sadhaka | accomplishment; for finishing rather than starting | auspicious |
| 7, 16, 25 | Vadha | harm; the heaviest of the three, rejected outright | avoided |
| 8, 17, 26 | Mitra | friendship; for dealings with people rather than things | auspicious |
| 9, 18, 27 | Ati-Mitra | close friendship, also Parama Mitra; the mildest of the nine | auspicious |
Five taras are marked auspicious, three are avoided (the third, fifth and seventh: Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha) and the first, Janma, is marked mixed: the table glosses it as intensifying rather than helping. The avoided three are the ones every lineage rejects, according to the same table, which is why the chart further down lists them and not the others.
How to Calculate Tara Bala
Count from your birth nakshatra to the day’s nakshatra, along the usual order from Ashwini to Revati, with your own star as one. If the count is 9 or less, that is the tara. If it is more, divide by 9 and take the remainder, reading a remainder of 0 as the ninth tara, Ati-Mitra.
Two worked examples, for someone born in Rohini. On a day the Moon is in Hasta, the count from Rohini to Hasta is 10; divided by 9 that leaves 1, so the day is in the Janma tara, the same tara as the birth star itself. On a day the Moon is in Ardra, the count is 3, which is Vipat, one of the avoided three. The day’s nakshatra is printed on every dated panchang page; your own comes from the nakshatra finder.
Two Things the Count Guarantees
Because there are 27 nakshatras and nine taras, the cycle runs round exactly three times, and every tara is held by three nakshatras nine apart. The nakshatra lords also repeat every nine, in the order the Vimshottari dasha uses, so the three stars of any one tara always share a lord. Your Janma group is simply the three nakshatras ruled by your birth star’s lord, your Vipat stars are the three ruled by one other graha, and so on. A chart that seems to have 27 rows really has nine patterns.
The second guarantee concerns counting the other way. If a day’s star is tara t from yours, then yours is tara 11 minus t from it, except that Janma stays Janma. So Sampat in one direction is Ati-Mitra in the other, Vipat pairs with Mitra, Kshema with Vadha, and Pratyari with Sadhaka. Each of the three avoided taras pairs with one the table marks auspicious, and no two avoided taras pair with each other. The page checks this for all 702 ordered pairs of different stars. It is the same arithmetic that keeps both directions of Tara koota from being unfavourable at once.
Tara Bala Chart: Avoided Stars for Each Birth Nakshatra
For each janma nakshatra, its lord, its Janma group, and the three nakshatras in each of the three avoided taras. On a day the Moon is in one of the stars in the last three columns, the convention the site follows does not choose that day for a beginning.
Read across, the lords give the pattern away: for a Ketu-ruled birth star the avoided taras fall on the Sun’s, Mars’s and Jupiter’s nakshatras; move one lord along the dasha order and every column moves one lord with it. Every other nakshatra, the ones in Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra and Ati-Mitra, is in a tara the table marks auspicious.
Tara Balam and Chandra Balam Together
The two answer different questions and can disagree. Tara Bala depends on the day’s nakshatra, which changes about once a day; Chandra Bala depends on the Moon’s sign, which changes about every two and a half days. A day can be a good Chandra Bala day in an avoided tara, or the reverse. The sharpest Chandra Bala case, the Moon in the 8th sign from your own, has its own dated list: Chandrashtama days 2026–2027. Neither factor is a score, and the site does not add them into one.
Tara Bala also sits beside the nakshatra’s own muhurta class, fixed, movable, fierce and so on, which is a property of the star and not of the count from yours. That class is on each nakshatra page.
What This Page Does Not Do
It does not say what a tara does to a person, and it does not turn a tara into a forecast for the day. The verdicts are a convention for choosing when to begin something, reported as the convention states them, and the chart applies the count; nothing more is read from it. In Hindi: तारा बल चार्ट: 27 नक्षत्रों के लिए नौ ताराएँ.
Know Your Birth Nakshatra
The Janam Kundli report computes your birth nakshatra and Moon sign from your birth details, the two starting points for Tara Bala and Chandra Bala. It does not forecast from them.
