D45 Akshavedamsa Chart: 45 Parts, Three Starts, No Chain
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
In the D45 every sign is cut into 45 parts of 0°40′ each, and the count of signs through those parts begins in one of only three places: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Since 45 parts make three full trips round the zodiac with nine signs to spare, and the starts are fixed by mobility rather than carried over, the count never runs on from one sign into the next, and at every sign boundary the D45 sign jumps. This page builds the whole table from the Parashari rule and pins each pattern it describes.
D45 Chart in Astrology: the Akshavedamsha (अक्षवेदांश)
The akshavedamsha is the 15th of the sixteen charts in the Parashari list, which the shodashvarga hub compares side by side. For its area of life that list writes “all matters, read together”, word for word the entry it gives the D60 shashtiamsha and no other chart. So unlike the navamsa (D9), which the same list ties to one subject, the D45 is not tied to a single topic. The page reports that entry as the tradition’s and does not attach a reading to any D45 sign.
Three Starting Signs, Set by Mobility
- Movable (chara) signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn: the first part is Aries.
- Fixed (sthira) signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius: the first part is Leo.
- Dual (dvisvabhava) signs, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces: the first part is Sagittarius.
From that first part the count moves on one sign per part. The three starting signs are the three fire signs, and the four signs of each mobility share one row, so the whole twelve-row table reduces to three distinct rows. Among the sixteen, the D16 is the only other chart with exactly these starts; the D20 uses the same three signs but gives Sagittarius to the fixed signs and Leo to the dual ones.

Look along any single line of the table and only three signs ever appear in it, four signs apart: a trine of one element. Across the whole twelve-by-45 grid that gives each fire sign 48 cells and every other sign 44.
Three Rounds and Nine Over: Four Parts or Three
Forty-five is three twelves and nine. In each row, then, the starting sign and the eight after it get four parts apiece, and the three signs just before the starting sign get three.
| Row | Four parts each | Three parts each |
|---|---|---|
| Movable | Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius | Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces |
| Fixed | Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries | Taurus, Gemini, Cancer |
| Dual | Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo | Virgo, Libra, Scorpio |
Each three-part group holds one earth, one air and one water sign.
Own-Sign Parts: Four Each, Except the Earth Signs
A sign meets its own name in the D45 as often as its row repeats it. For nine signs that is four times; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, the three earth signs, each fall among the three-part signs of their own row and so get three. Consecutive own-sign parts sit twelve parts, 8°00′, apart.
- Aries: parts 1, 13, 25 and 37
- Taurus: parts 10, 22 and 34
- Gemini: parts 7, 19, 31 and 43
- Cancer: parts 4, 16, 28 and 40
- Leo: parts 1, 13, 25 and 37
- Virgo: parts 10, 22 and 34
- Libra: parts 7, 19, 31 and 43
- Scorpio: parts 4, 16, 28 and 40
- Sagittarius: parts 1, 13, 25 and 37
- Capricorn: parts 10, 22 and 34
- Aquarius: parts 7, 19, 31 and 43
- Pisces: parts 4, 16, 28 and 40
The navamsa has one such arc per sign, the case the vargottama page covers; the D45 arcs are each one-fifth as wide.
Why the D45 Is Not One Chain
For the parts of the zodiac to run as one unbroken count, each sign would have to start on the sign after the one its predecessor ended on. That would put the first part of each sign 9×i signs after Aries, for the sign i places along: Aries, then Capricorn, Libra, Cancer and round again. Those are exactly the navamsa’s starting signs, since 45 and 9 leave the same remainder after dividing by twelve. The D45’s actual starts match that pattern for Aries alone.
So every join breaks. Aries ends on Sagittarius, and Taurus opens not on Capricorn but on Leo. At all twelve joins the first part of the new sign is the 9th sign from the last part of the old one, a fire sign to a fire sign. The D16 shares the D45’s starts and still runs as one chain, because its sixteen parts carry the count four signs past whole rounds, exactly the gap between Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
D45 Chart Calculator: a Worked Degree
Multiply the degree within the sign by 1.5 (there are one and a half parts to a degree) and drop the fraction: that is the part number counted from zero. Take 23°50′ Aquarius: 23.833 × 1.5 is 35.750, so the count is 35, part 36, the 23°20′–24°00′ arc. Aquarius is fixed and starts on Leo; 35 signs on from Leo is Cancer.
Move the same point to 24°02′ Aquarius, a few minutes of arc later, and it has crossed the 24°00′ boundary into part 37, which gives Leo. For a graha the difference is a reminder that the degree has to be right to the minute of arc. For the lagna it matters more.
Birth Time and the D45 Lagna
The lagna is the degree on the eastern horizon, and it travels through the zodiac far faster than any graha, the Moon included. A D45 part is only 0°40′ of that travel, so a birth time recorded a little early or late can be enough to move the lagna into the next part, and if the move carries it over a sign boundary the D45 sign jumps instead of stepping on by one. The grahas’ own D45 signs barely register the same small change. How the lagna differs from the Moon’s sign is set out under rashi and lagna. This page gives no clock figure for a part, and no method for correcting a birth time.
What This Page Does Not Do
It sets out the Parashari construction of the akshavedamsha and the counts that follow, and nothing beyond. It names no meaning for a graha or lagna in any D45 sign, forecasts nothing, and does not score a cell or a row. The forty-five divisions are not given names here, because the site’s data holds none, and other schemes for this division are not covered.
Degrees for the D45 Table
The Janam Kundli report calculates the degree of your lagna and of every graha to the minute of arc. It does not interpret the D45, and the lagna degree is only as good as the birth time you enter.
