D7 Saptamsa Chart: Seven Parts of a Sign, Computed

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

The Saptamsha (सप्तांश), the seventh-part chart, is the D7 of the sixteen divisional charts. It divides each sign of the birth chart into seven equal parts and assigns a sign to each. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, in its list of what each varga is examined for, gives the D7 to children and grandchildren. That assignment is the whole of what this page says about meaning. Everything else below is the arithmetic: how wide a part is, which sign each part takes, and how to find the D7 sign of a graha from its degree. The other fifteen charts are set side by side on the shodashvarga hub.

“D7 Chart Boy or Girl”: Not Answered Here

A common search asks whether the D7 shows if a child will be a boy or a girl. This page does not read a child’s sex from the D7, and Live Pandit Ji does not read it from any chart, any placement or any other method. That is a fixed rule of the site, not a gap waiting to be filled, and no method for it is described here, attributed or otherwise. Pre-natal sex determination is prohibited in India under the PCPNDT Act, and a chart reading offered for the same purpose would serve the same end. Fertility, pregnancy, how many children a person will have and when a child will be born are left out for the same reason: a sign table gives none of them, and the page will not dress a guess up as arithmetic. The same goes for the query “d7 chart prediction”; there is no prediction on this page.

Seven Arcs of 4°17′09″

Thirty degrees does not divide evenly by seven. Each part is 30/7 of a degree, a little over four and a quarter degrees, which comes to 4°17′09″ once rounded to the nearest second of arc. The boundaries below are rounded the same way, so two neighbouring arcs share an edge to the second and not beyond it.

Odd Signs Count From Themselves, Even Signs From Their 7th

The starting sign depends on whether the sign being divided is odd or even. The six odd signs, Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, begin their first part with the sign itself and run forward one sign per part, so the 7th part lands on the 7th sign from them, their opposite. The six even signs, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces, begin from the 7th sign from themselves and run forward until the 7th part comes back to the sign itself. Either way the seven parts span seven consecutive signs with the sign and its opposite at the two ends. The difference is which half of the zodiac they take: an odd sign covers the half that runs forward from itself to its opposite, an even sign the half that runs forward from its opposite back round to itself.

The cell where a sign meets its own name is picked out in gold. For every odd sign it is the 1st part, the opening 4°17′09″; for every even sign it is the 7th, the closing 4°17′09″ from 25°42′51″ to the end of the sign. A graha in one of those arcs holds the same sign in the birth chart and the D7. Each sign has exactly one such part, and its position flips with odd and even, where the D4’s repeating quarter is always the first and the navamsa’s moves with movable, fixed and dual signs (see the vargottama page for that one).

One Unbroken Cycle of 84 Parts

Put the rows end to end and the odd–even rule turns out to be a single count. Aries closes on Libra, and Taurus opens on Scorpio, the next sign. Taurus closes on itself and Gemini opens on itself, again the next sign. That continues all the way round: the 84 parts of the zodiac run through the twelve signs in order without a jump, seven full rounds, from the first part of Aries to the last part of Pisces, which is Pisces. The navamsa is built on the same kind of count, nine parts to a sign and 108 in all; how that chart is used is covered in the D9 navamsa guide.

Two consequences can be checked against the table. Each column contains all twelve signs exactly once, so the 3rd part, say, is a different sign for every rashi. And across the whole grid each sign appears seven times, once per round of the cycle.

D7 Chart Kaise Dekhe: Reading Off a Graha’s Saptamsha

Three steps find the D7 sign of any graha, or of the lagna. Take a graha at 10° of Taurus as the example.

  1. Find the part. 10° lies between 8°34′17″ and 12°51′26″, the 3rd part.
  2. Find the starting sign. Taurus is an even sign, so its parts start from the 7th sign from it, Scorpio.
  3. Count forward. The 3rd part is two signs on from Scorpio, which is Capricorn. The graha’s D7 sign is Capricorn, the same entry the table gives in the Taurus row.

A full D7 chart repeats this for the lagna and each graha and sets the D7 lagna’s sign as the first house. A free kundli gives the lagna degree, and the Kundli report gives every graha’s. The lagna needs care: a part is barely over four degrees wide, so a birth time that is a little out, or a chart cast with a different ayanamsa, can put the lagna in the neighbouring part and change the D7 lagna sign. A graha near one of the boundaries in the arc table carries the same uncertainty.

Where the Page Stops

Parashari practice reads the D7 against the birth chart, and in the birth chart children belong to the 5th house, the Putra Bhava; that house has its own page, the 5th house guide. How an astrologer combines the two is a matter of the D7 lagna, the lords of its houses and where they fall, read alongside the dasha running, and none of it sits in a sign table. This page gives the signs and the arcs. It does not say what a graha in any D7 sign brings, it gives no verdict on any placement, and it does not touch a child’s sex, the number of children or their timing. In Hindi: सप्तमांश (D7) कुंडली: हर राशि के सात भाग, गणना सहित.

The Degrees a D7 Is Built From

The Janam Kundli report calculates the degree of your lagna and of every graha, from which each D7 sign follows. It makes no forecast about children from the D7.
