Disha Shool Chart: The Barred Direction for Each Weekday

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Disha Shool Meaning (दिशा शूल)

Disha means direction. Disha shool, often run together as dishashool, is a travel custom of the muhurta manuals: for each day of the week they mark one of the four cardinal directions as closed for setting out on a journey. Nothing else about the day enters into it. The tithi, the nakshatra and the yoga can all be acceptable and the direction still barred, because the rule looks only at the weekday and at where you are headed.

That second input is why a date list cannot settle it for you. The site’s travel shortlist, on the travel muhurat pages, tests each day’s panchang and leaves the direction to the reader. This page sets out the weekday rule on its own terms, turns it round so you can start from your destination, and then counts how it cuts into the shortlist over the next few months.

Disha Shool Chart by Weekday

One direction is closed on each weekday, so three remain open every day. The barred column is the site’s own table; the open column is simply what is left.

WeekdayBarred directionOpen directions
SundayWestEast, North and South
MondayEastWest, North and South
TuesdayNorthWest, East and South
WednesdayNorthWest, East and South
ThursdaySouthWest, East and North
FridayWestEast, North and South
SaturdayEastWest, North and South

Three of the directions are closed on two days each and one on a single day. Tuesday and Wednesday, back to back in the week, both close North. Sunday and Friday close West and Monday and Saturday close East, two pairs that sit apart in the week. Thursday is the only day that closes South.

Disha Shool for East, West, North and South

Most people start from the destination, not the calendar. Read the other way, the same table gives each direction its closed and open days. South is barred on one weekday only; West, East and North are barred on two each. That is the whole of the asymmetry: seven days spread over four directions cannot come out even, and in this table the odd one out is the south.

NorthTuesday and WednesdaySunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (5 days)

Disha Shool Beside the Travel Weekday Rule

The site’s travel filter has a weekday rule of its own, separate from the direction. It leaves out Tuesday and Saturday, which its notes call the generally avoided days for a journey, and keeps Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Alongside that it asks for one of the 11 nakshatras in its travel set, the movable (Chara) and swift (Kshipra) groups plus Mrigashira, Anuradha and Revati; a tithi that is neither one of the three Rikta tithis nor Amavasya; none of the 9 ashubha yogas; and no Vishti karana at sunrise.

The two weekday rules overlap. Tuesday is North’s barred day and Saturday is East’s, so the filter has already taken out one of the closed days for each of those two directions before the direction is asked. West gets no such head start: both of its barred days, Sunday and Friday, are days the filter keeps. Within the five weekdays the shortlist can return, that leaves West open on three and every other direction on four.

How Many Travel Days Stay Open: November 2026 to February 2027

The weekday table only says how many kinds of day are open. What a traveller has to choose from depends on which weekdays the shortlisted days happen to fall on, and that changes month to month. Below are the days that pass every limb of the travel filter in each of the next four months, with the number left after the direction is applied.

MonthShortlisted daysWest openEast openNorth openSouth open
November 20263: 1 (Sun), 26 (Thu), 29 (Sun)1332
December 20264: 4 (Fri), 6 (Sun), 25 (Fri), 31 (Thu)1443
January 20275: 11 (Mon), 15 (Fri), 20 (Wed), 27 (Wed), 31 (Sun)3435
February 20277: 7 (Sun), 11 (Thu), 12 (Fri), 18 (Thu), 19 (Fri), 26 (Fri), 28 (Sun)2775

Across the four months the filter shortlists 19 days. A journey east keeps 18 of them, north 17 and south 15, but a journey west keeps only 7, because 12 of the 19 land on a Sunday or Friday. West has the fewest open days, or ties for the fewest, in every one of the four months. In November 2026 it is down to a single day, 26 November, a Thursday, and that day is the one the south loses. January 2027 is the only month of the four with no Thursday on its shortlist, so every one of its days is open to the south.

Each month page lists these days with their tithi and nakshatra and also shows the days that miss by one rule, which this count leaves out.

Using the Chart With a Date List

Begin with the direction of the journey and the weekdays the second table leaves open for it. Then open the travel month you need from the muhurat hub and keep only the shortlisted days that fall on those weekdays. For an occasion other than travel, the shubh muhurat finder runs the same kind of filter, and the choghadiya tool divides a chosen day into its periods if you also want to pick a part of the day. For why the weekday carries weight in these lists at all, see the best day to start new work; for a check that depends on your own birth star rather than on the calendar alone, see Tara Bala.

What This Page Leaves Out

The site’s table gives one barred direction per weekday among the four cardinal points and nothing for north-east, south-east, south-west or north-west, so the page does not assign those. It says nothing about what happens on a journey begun in a barred direction, and offers nothing to do about one. The chart reports a custom for choosing when to set out; it is not a forecast for the trip. In Hindi: दिशा शूल चार्ट: किस वार कौन-सी दिशा वर्जित है.

Travel Muhurat, Month by Month

Every month of 2026 and 2027 tested against the travel filter, with the barred direction printed beside each shortlisted day.
