Signs and the Sun
Is Ophiuchus the 13th Zodiac Sign? Sun Dates 2026–2028
Published 2026-10-28 | Live Pandit Ji
The Sun will be in the constellation Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, from 30 November 2026 until 18 December 2026 (IST), about 18 days. In 2027 the stretch runs from 30 November to 19 December, and in 2028 from 29 November to 18 December. That is why Ophiuchus gets called the 13th zodiac sign. It is a constellation, though, and neither Vedic nor western astrology counts it as a sign. Both divide the Sun’s path into twelve equal signs of 30 degrees, and the thirteen constellations along that path are not equal and do not line up with them.
The dates on this page come from the JPL DE421 ephemeris and the official constellation borders. The same computation reproduced all 26 of the site’s sidereal Sun-sign entries from November 2026 to December 2028 to the minute. Dates are IST.
A Constellation Is Not a Sign
A constellation is an area of sky. The International Astronomical Union recognises 88 of them, and the borders it adopted, drawn by the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte and published in 1930, give every point of the sky to exactly one. The Sun’s yearly path, the ecliptic, runs through thirteen of these areas: the twelve with zodiac names, plus Ophiuchus, which reaches down between Scorpius and Sagittarius. The areas are uneven, so the Sun spends very different stretches of time in each.
A sign is a 30-degree slice of the ecliptic, named after the constellation that lay near it when the zodiac was laid out. Western astrology counts its signs from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac). Vedic astrology counts them from the stars, with the Lahiri ayanamsa as the usual offset (the sidereal zodiac), so its signs sit about 24 degrees further on. Neither scheme uses constellation borders, and that is why Ophiuchus never enters either one. The Lahiri ayanamsa page gives the size of the offset and what it moves.
The 13 Constellations of the Sun in 2027
Each row gives the date the Sun enters the constellation and the date it moves on to the next. The last two columns give the 2027 date the Sun enters the Vedic sign of the same name, and the western start of that sign that comes before it. Constellations take their Latin names, so Scorpius is the constellation and Scorpio the sign.
| Constellation | Sun in it | Days | Vedic sign starts | Western sign starts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capricornus | 20 Jan – 17 Feb | 27.4 | Makara: 14 Jan | Capricorn: 22 Dec 2026 |
| Aquarius | 17 Feb – 13 Mar | 24.1 | Kumbha: 13 Feb | Aquarius: 20 Jan |
| Pisces | 13 Mar – 19 Apr | 37.5 | Meena: 15 Mar | Pisces: 19 Feb |
| Aries | 19 Apr – 15 May | 25.5 | Mesha: 14 Apr | Aries: 21 Mar |
| Taurus | 15 May – 22 Jun | 38.3 | Vrishabha: 15 May | Taurus: 20 Apr |
| Gemini | 22 Jun – 21 Jul | 29.2 | Mithuna: 15 Jun | Gemini: 21 May |
| Cancer | 21 Jul – 11 Aug | 21 | Karka: 17 Jul | Cancer: 21 Jun |
| Leo | 11 Aug – 17 Sep | 37.1 | Simha: 17 Aug | Leo: 23 Jul |
| Virgo | 17 Sep – 1 Nov | 44.5 | Kanya: 17 Sep | Virgo: 23 Aug |
| Libra | 1 Nov – 24 Nov | 23.1 | Tula: 18 Oct | Libra: 23 Sep |
| Scorpius | 24 Nov – 30 Nov | 6.5 | Vrishchika: 17 Nov | Scorpio: 23 Oct |
| Ophiuchus | 30 Nov – 19 Dec | 18.3 | no sign | no sign |
| Sagittarius | 19 Dec – 20 Jan 2028 | 32.8 | Dhanu: 16 Dec | Sagittarius: 22 Nov |
The thirteen stays add up to 365.3 days, one trip round the sky. They range from 6.5 days in Scorpius (24 Nov – 30 Nov) to 44.5 days in Virgo (17 Sep – 1 Nov), while every sign, in either zodiac, takes the Sun about a month. So the Sun spends nearly three times as long in Ophiuchus as in Scorpius.
The dates shift by up to a day from year to year, as the 2026 to 2028 Ophiuchus dates show. Over centuries they drift later, about a day every 72 years, because the sky’s fixed borders slide past the equinox-based calendar. A list worked out in American time can also put a date a day earlier than this one, because India is more than nine hours ahead.
The Vedic Signs Sit Close to the Constellations
Because the sidereal zodiac is tied to the stars, each Vedic sign begins near the date the Sun reaches the constellation of the same name. In 2027 the constellation entry comes between 6 days before the Vedic sign begins (Leo) and 14 days after it (Libra). In 2027 the western signs begin 23 to 26 days ahead of the Vedic ones, so a western sign and its namesake constellation are about a month apart. That gap, the ayanamsa, is what the recurring “your sign has changed” headlines describe, not a 13th sign. The Vedic Sun sign dates page gives the sidereal entries for 2026 to 2028 to the minute, with every entry date from 1950 to 2050.
Where Ophiuchus Falls in the Vedic Zodiac
Measured in the sidereal zodiac, the Sun enters Ophiuchus at 13°47′ of Vrishchika (Scorpio) and leaves it at 2°23′ of Dhanu (Sagittarius). In nakshatra terms the stretch begins in Anuradha, takes in the whole of Jyeshtha and ends early in Moola. Jyotish reads that part of the sky through those signs and nakshatras and has no separate division for Ophiuchus.
For the 2026 stay this means a Vedic Sun in Vrishchika until the Sun enters Dhanu on 16 December 2026, and in Dhanu for the last days of the stay, to 18 December. The Sun’s transit through Vrishchika page has the November–December 2026 dates and times.
If You Were Born While the Sun Was in Ophiuchus
Nothing in your chart moves. Your Sun sign is still the one either zodiac gives for your birth moment: Vrishchika or Dhanu in the Vedic scheme, Sagittarius in the western one. Jyotish also reads a chart more from the Moon sign and the lagna than from the Sun sign. The Sun sign calculator gives the approximate Vedic Sun sign for a date of birth, and the Moon sign calculator gives the Chandra rashi the site’s rashifal is read from. If your birth falls on a day the Sun changes sign, the Janam Kundli report lists the Sun’s exact sidereal degree for your birth time.
What This Page Does Not Give
It gives no traits, compatibility or forecast for “Ophiuchus people”. Neither Vedic nor mainstream western astrology has such a reading, and a list made up for it would have nothing behind it. It also makes no claim about seeing the constellation. While the Sun is in Ophiuchus, those stars are up in the daytime sky and lost in its glare. The dates follow the Sun’s centre, seen from the Earth’s centre, against the 1930 borders.
In Brief
- Ophiuchus dates: 30 Nov – 18 Dec 2026, 30 Nov – 19 Dec 2027, 29 Nov – 18 Dec 2028
- 13 or 12: thirteen constellations lie on the Sun’s path; both zodiacs use twelve equal signs
- Uneven stays: 6.5 days in Scorpius, 44.5 in Virgo
- Vedic signs: begin within about two weeks of the constellation of the same name; western signs about a month earlier
- In Jyotish: Ophiuchus covers Vrishchika 13°47′ to Dhanu 2°23′, and no separate reading exists
