Pushkar Navamsa Table: Degrees, Signs and Nakshatra Padas

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Every sign holds nine navamshas of 3°20′, and the pushkara list picks out two of them in each sign, 24 arcs in all. Which two depends only on the element of the sign. Once the list is written down, everything else on this page follows from the navamsha rule and the nakshatra cycle: the D9 sign each arc gives, the lord of that sign, the nakshatra pada it coincides with, and a few patterns that a casual summary of the list gets wrong.

Pushkar Navamsa Meaning (पुष्कर नवांश)

A navamsha is a ninth part of a sign, the unit from which the D9 chart is built; the navamsa chart guide covers how that chart is cast and read, and the shodashvarga hub places it among the sixteen divisional charts. Pushkara navamsha (पुष्कर नवांश) is the name the muhurta and jataka manuals of the Parashari tradition give to a short list of particular navamshas, and those manuals count them as auspicious portions of the zodiac. That is their classification, reported here as theirs. This page does not extend it to any result for a person, a graha or a chosen moment; it lays out where the arcs are and what they coincide with.

Two Navamshas a Sign, Picked by Element

The list as those manuals give it is short enough to state in four lines. Fire signs take their 7th and 9th navamshas, earth signs their 3rd and 5th, air signs their 6th and 8th, and water signs their 1st and 3rd. The element of each sign is read from the site’s sign table:

ElementSignsNavamshasDegrees in the sign
FireAries, Leo and Sagittarius7th and 9th20°00′–23°20′, 26°40′–30°00′
EarthTaurus, Virgo and Capricorn3rd and 5th6°40′–10°00′, 13°20′–16°40′
AirGemini, Libra and Aquarius6th and 8th16°40′–20°00′, 23°20′–26°40′
WaterCancer, Scorpio and Pisces1st and 3rd0°00′–3°20′, 6°40′–10°00′

Twelve signs with two arcs each make 24 arcs, and at 3°20′ apiece they cover 80° of the 360° zodiac, two ninths of it. In every sign the two chosen navamshas are separated by exactly one that is not on the list.

Pushkar Navamsa Table: All 24 Arcs

The navamsha sign in each row comes from the Parashari navamsha rule (a movable sign counts from itself, a fixed sign from its 9th, a dual sign from its 5th), and it was checked against the 108-pada cycle the site’s nakshatra pages use, which reaches the same sign by a different route. The last column links to the page for that pada.

Six Navamsha Signs, Four Lords

Although the arcs are spread over all twelve signs, their D9 signs are only six: Taurus (six times), Cancer (three times), Virgo (three times), Libra (three times), Sagittarius (three times) and Pisces (six times). Fire signs reach Libra and Sagittarius; earth and air signs both land on Pisces and Taurus, which is why those two appear twice as often as the rest; water signs reach Cancer and Virgo. The lords of those six signs are Venus, Jupiter, the Moon and Mercury. In the site’s planet table Venus and Jupiter are classed “Benefic”, the Moon “benefic when waxing” and Mercury “neutral — takes on its company”, so every pushkara navamsha sits in a sign of one of the grahas that list does not call malefic.

Not Every Navamsha in Those Four Grahas’ Signs

The obvious shortcut is to treat the pushkara navamshas as simply the navamshas that fall in a sign of Venus, Jupiter, the Moon or Mercury. The full navamsha table does not support it. Of the 108 navamshas in the zodiac, 63 fall in a sign of one of those four lords, and the list takes only 24 of them, leaving 39 out. Per sign, a fire sign has four such navamshas off the list and every earth, air and water sign has three. In Aries, for example, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th navamshas fall in Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and Virgo, all signs of those lords, and none of them is pushkara. Gemini, a sign of Mercury, never appears as a pushkara navamsha sign at all, while Virgo, Mercury’s other sign, appears three times. Whatever the reasoning behind the original selection, the four-lords description is a property of the list and not a rule that generates it.

Each Pushkara Navamsha Is One Nakshatra Pada

A nakshatra pada is also 3°20′, and because 27 nakshatras of four padas make 108 quarters, exactly as twelve signs of nine navamshas do, every navamsha coincides with one pada. That turns the list into a list of padas, and two regularities appear. First, the two pushkara padas in any sign belong to consecutive nakshatras, one on each side of a nakshatra junction: in fire signs they are the 3rd pada of one nakshatra and the 1st of the next, and in the other three elements the 4th pada of one and the 2nd of the next. Second, the 24 padas fall in only 18 nakshatras, because six nakshatras hold two pushkara padas each: Krittika (padas 1 and 4), Punarvasu (padas 2 and 4), Uttara Phalguni (padas 1 and 4), Vishakha (padas 2 and 4), Uttara Ashadha (padas 1 and 4) and Purva Bhadrapada (padas 2 and 4). Each of those six straddles a sign boundary, and in each the two pushkara padas lie on opposite sides of it: Krittika has pada 1 in Aries and pada 4 in Taurus, and the other five follow the same pattern.

Where the List Meets Vargottama, and Where It Avoids Gandanta

A graha is vargottama when its navamsha sign is the same as its rashi sign, which happens in one navamsha of every sign. Three of the 24 pushkara arcs are also vargottama arcs: Taurus 13°20′–16°40′, Cancer 0°00′–3°20′ and Sagittarius 26°40′–30°00′. The vargottama page lists all twelve of those arcs. In the other direction, none of the 24 is a gandanta pada, the last pada of a water sign or the first of the fire sign after it: the water signs’ pushkara navamshas sit at the start of the sign and the fire signs’ at the end, the opposite ends from the gandanta junctions.

Checking a Degree: The Calculation by Hand

To test a graha or the lagna, take its degree inside its sign, divide by 3°20′ (that is, multiply by three and divide by ten), drop the fraction and add one. That is the navamsha number. Then look at the element row above. A graha at 24°05′ Gemini is in navamsha 8, the 23°20′–26°40′ arc; Gemini is an air sign, so that navamsha is on the list, its D9 sign is Taurus and it is Punarvasu pada 2. At 21° Gemini the same steps give navamsha 7, D9 sign Aries, which is not on the list. In Hindi the term is पुष्कर नवांश, and the calculation is the same in any language. The Kundli report gives the degree of every graha and the lagna, which is what the test needs; the free kundli gives the lagna sign and degree.

Why the Pushkara Bhaga Degrees Are Left Out

Alongside the navamsha list, some treatments add a single pushkara bhaga, one particular degree in each sign. The figures for it differ from source to source, and a degree that cannot be pinned to one stated list is not something this site can compute or check. The page therefore gives the navamsha arcs only, in the form stated above, and leaves the single degrees out.

What This Page Does Not Do

It gives no result for a graha, a lagna or a moment that falls in one of these arcs, and it does not say that a placement here improves or protects anything in a chart. It offers no muhurta, no time of day and no date when any graha enters a pushkara navamsha. A pushkara arc is still one navamsha among 108, read with the rest of the chart by whoever is reading it; the page’s contribution is the location of the arcs and the arithmetic they share. In Hindi: पुष्कर नवांश तालिका: अंश, राशियाँ और नक्षत्र-पद.

Every Degree in Your Chart

The Janam Kundli report lists the sign and degree of your lagna and each graha, so you can check each one against the table above. It does not attach a result to a pushkara placement.
