Rashi Sandhi and Lagna Sandhi: Planets at 0° or 29°
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Rashi Sandhi Meaning (राशि संधि)
Sandhi (संधि) is the ordinary word for a joint or a meeting point, the place where two things are fastened together. Rashi sandhi is the joint between two signs. A graha, or the lagna, is said to be in rashi sandhi when its longitude sits at the very start or the very end of a sign, so that a chart shows it at 0° of one rashi or at 29° of the one before. The question behind the search “what if a planet is at 0 degrees” is really a question about this joint.
Parashari practitioners read a graha at the joint as weak, or as giving results that belong fully to neither sign: it has only just arrived in one rashi, or it is about to leave another. How wide the joint is depends on whom you ask. Some authors keep it very narrow and others allow a broader strip on each side, and there is no single figure the texts agree on. For that reason this page prints no width at all. It treats rashi sandhi as a description of where a graha is, near an edge, and leaves the further step of what that position means to the reader of the chart.
A related scheme already covers the edges of a sign in a different way. In the baladi avastha bands set out on the baladi and jagradadi avastha page, the first and last bands of each sign carry the names Bala (infant) and Mrita (dead). Because odd and even signs alternate all the way round the site’s sign table, the band on one side of any boundary has the same name as the band on the other side, so every junction sits inside a single run of Bala or of Mrita. That page gives the band sizes; this one does not repeat them.
Lagna Sandhi: Why the Birth Time Matters Most Here
Lagna sandhi is the same idea applied to the ascendant. The lagna moves through the whole zodiac each day, far faster than any graha, so a lagna near the edge of its sign is the case where a birth time that is slightly off does the most damage. On the other side of the edge the lagna is a different sign, and since the site counts houses whole-sign from the lagna, every house then takes a different sign as well.
How much of the chart that changes can be counted. Taking each lagna and the sign after it, and comparing the lord of every house in the two charts, gives the same answer for all twelve pairs: eleven of the twelve houses get a different lord, and only one keeps its lord. The house that keeps it is always the one headed by Capricorn in the earlier chart, because Capricorn and Aquarius are the only neighbouring signs in the table with the same lord, Saturn. For an Aries lagna moving into Taurus that is the 10th house; for a Capricorn lagna moving into Aquarius it is the 1st house itself. Every other house lord, and so every reading built on house lordship, comes out differently.
This is why a lagna at the edge of its sign is a good reason to check a recorded birth time before reading anything else. Where no reliable time exists at all, the kundli without birth time page sets out what can still be worked out.
Lagna sandhi is not the same thing as bhava sandhi. In the bhava chalit reckoning described on the bhava chalit chart page, each bhava is measured out from the lagna’s degree, and bhava sandhi is the point where one bhava hands over to the next. Those junctions are set by the lagna degree, so in general they fall partway through a sign rather than at its edge, and they line up with the sign boundaries only in the one special case that page describes. A graha can be in rashi sandhi without being near a bhava sandhi, and the reverse. The first is about the sign a graha occupies; the second is about which bhava it is counted in.
Gandanta: The Three Water-Fire Junctions
Of the twelve junctions, jyotish practice singles out three under the name gandanta (गण्डान्त): the points where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins. Two separate columns of the site’s sign data give the same three. Read off the element column, the boundaries where a Water sign is followed by a Fire sign are Cancer-Leo, Scorpio-Sagittarius and Pisces-Aries. Read off the nakshatra layout instead, they are also the only three boundaries where a nakshatra ends at the same point as the sign. At the other nine junctions a single nakshatra runs across from one sign into the next.
| Junction | Elements | Nakshatra at the end | Nakshatra at the start | Gandanta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries (मेष) to Taurus (वृषभ) | Fire to Earth | Krittika | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Taurus (वृषभ) to Gemini (मिथुन) | Earth to Air | Mrigashira | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Gemini (मिथुन) to Cancer (कर्क) | Air to Water | Punarvasu | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Cancer (कर्क) to Leo (सिंह) | Water to Fire | Ashlesha | Magha | yes |
| Leo (सिंह) to Virgo (कन्या) | Fire to Earth | Uttara Phalguni | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Virgo (कन्या) to Libra (तुला) | Earth to Air | Chitra | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Libra (तुला) to Scorpio (वृश्चिक) | Air to Water | Vishakha | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Scorpio (वृश्चिक) to Sagittarius (धनु) | Water to Fire | Jyeshtha | Mula | yes |
| Sagittarius (धनु) to Capricorn (मकर) | Fire to Earth | Uttara Ashadha | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Capricorn (मकर) to Aquarius (कुम्भ) | Earth to Air | Dhanishta | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Aquarius (कुम्भ) to Pisces (मीन) | Air to Water | Purva Bhadrapada | the same nakshatra continues | — |
| Pisces (मीन) to Aries (मेष) | Water to Fire | Revati | Ashwini | yes |
The six nakshatras on either side of the three seams, Ashlesha (आश्लेषा) with Magha (मघा), Jyeshtha (ज्येष्ठा) with Mula (मूल) and Revati (रेवती) with Ashwini (अश्विनी), are exactly the six that the nakshatra table lists as Gandmool. The site’s data spells the one after Jyeshtha Mula; the Gandmool nakshatra dates page writes it Moola, and lists the days the Moon spends in each pair. As that page notes, some texts narrow gandanta to a smaller strip right at the seam. The width differs by author, as it does for rashi sandhi, and none is printed here.
Put simply, gandanta is the one kind of rashi sandhi where two endings coincide: the graha is leaving a sign and a nakshatra at once, and stepping from water into fire. At the other nine junctions only the sign changes, and the nakshatra a graha is in stays the same across the line.
How Often Each Graha Reaches a Sign Edge, 2026-2028
Every time a graha changes sign it passes through a junction, so the number of sign changes is the number of times it stands at 0° of one rashi or 29° of another. The site’s ingress table records each change, including the ones made in backward (retrograde) motion. The counts below cover 2026, 2027 and 2028 for the planets and 2026 and 2027 for the Moon, which changes sign so often that two years already show the pace.
| Graha | Years counted | Sign changes | Of which backward | Of which at a gandanta junction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moon | 2026-2027 | 320 | 0 | 80 |
| Sun | 2026-2028 | 36 | 0 | 9 |
| Mercury | 2026-2028 | 43 | 3 | 9 |
| Venus | 2026-2028 | 37 | 1 | 8 |
| Mars | 2026-2028 | 23 | 1 | 7 |
| Jupiter | 2026-2028 | 8 | 2 | 3 |
| Saturn | 2026-2028 | 3 | 1 | 3 |
| Rahu | 2026-2028 | 2 | 2 (always backward) | 0 |
| Ketu | 2026-2028 | 2 | 2 (always backward) | 1 |
The Moon changes sign 320 times in those two years, 730 days, which is once every 2.3 days on average; no gap between two of its sign changes is shorter than about 2.0 days or longer than about 2.5. So the Moon is at some junction every couple of days, and 80 of its 320 crossings, exactly a quarter, are at one of the three gandanta seams, matching three junctions out of twelve. The Sun is as regular in its own way: twelve sign changes a year and three gandanta crossings a year, one at each seam.
The slow grahas are the opposite case. Saturn changes sign only three times in the three years, and all three are at the same seam, Pisces-Aries: forward on 3 June 2027, backward on 20 October 2027 and forward again on 23 February 2028. The ingress table marks all three rows as slow, moving under 0.1° a day, so a crossing count understates how long Saturn stays close to that edge; the count says how often, not for how long. Jupiter makes eight sign changes, three of them across the Cancer-Leo seam (31 October 2026, 25 January 2027 and 26 June 2027, the middle one backward).
Rahu and Ketu change sign two times each, always together and always backward. Their rows are mean-node values, a formula rather than an observed position, so each date is soft by about a day. Rahu crosses no gandanta seam in the window; Ketu crosses one, entering Cancer from Leo on or about 5 December 2026. How long each graha usually stays in a sign is the subject of the sign-stay lengths page.
How to Check for Rashi Sandhi in Your Own Chart
A sign-only chart cannot show rashi sandhi, because a graha at the first degree of a sign and one at its last are drawn in the same box. What settles it is the degree, printed in full with the part after the degree sign. Two things are worth reading in that figure. A graha shown at 29° of a sign is still in that sign until the figure rolls over to 0° of the next. And because authors differ on how wide the joint is, two readers can look at the same degree and disagree about whether it counts.
On this site, the free kundli tool gives the Moon sign, nakshatra, Sun sign, lagna, the running dasha, and the sign and house of Mars; among those, the lagna is the one position it prints with a degree, so it shows lagna sandhi but not rashi sandhi for the grahas. The Janam Kundli report prints the degree of the lagna and of the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, and it adds a notice when the lagna lies close to a sign boundary in terms of birth time. It does not compute Rahu and Ketu for a birth. The planets hub has a page for each graha, and a graha that falls in the same sign in the D1 and the navamsa is the separate topic of the vargottama page.
What This Page Does Not Do
The tables above are read-offs and counts from the sign, nakshatra and ingress tables. The page gives no width for rashi sandhi, lagna sandhi or gandanta, and no reading of what a graha or a lagna at a junction means for anyone. It does not look at anyone’s birth chart, does not time any event in a life, and suggests no remedy. A count of how often Saturn or the Moon reaches a sign edge is a fact about the sky, not about a person. In Hindi: राशि संधि और लग्न संधि: 0° या 29° पर ग्रह.

The Janam Kundli report prints the sign, degree, nakshatra and pada of the lagna and of the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, and flags a lagna close to a sign boundary. It gives no Rahu and Ketu positions, no divisional charts and no verdict on any graha at a junction.
