Sakat Chauth (Sankashti Chaturthi) 2028: Saturday, 15 January 2028

Sakat Chauth (Sankashti Chaturthi) in 2028 falls on Saturday, 15 January 2028. It is kept on the Krishna Chaturthi of amanta Pausha — the same fortnight that purnimanta calendars, the usual reckoning in north India, name after Magha.

Why Sakat Chauth Is on 15 January in 2028

The Krishna Chaturthi begins at 23:17 on 14 January 2028 and ends at 20:10 on 15 January 2028. The 2028 instants are the same everywhere; only the clock they are read on changes. The rule recorded for Sakat Chauth tests the tithi at sunrise, the default test for most of the calendar.

On 15 January 2028 the Sun rises at 07:15 and sets at 17:45 at New Delhi. The Krishna Chaturthi is running at that sunrise, which is the test, so 15 January 2028 is the day.

In 2028 the Krishna Chaturthi lasts 20 hours 53 minutes, against 22 hours 51 minutes in 2026 and 21 hours 50 minutes in 2027: a tithi is twelve degrees of the Moon’s gain on the Sun, and the Moon never gains at a steady rate. The day itself runs 10 hours 30 minutes from sunrise to sunset at New Delhi.

When the Krishna Chaturthi begins, the Moon is in Magha, ruled by Ketu.

Sakat Chauth in 2026, 2027 and 2028

Sakat Chauth 2028 comes 10 days earlier in the calendar year than Sakat Chauth 2027. Between Sakat Chauth 2027 and Sakat Chauth 2028 the lunation table has 12 new moons, and twelve lunations fall short of a solar year, so the date moves earlier.

In the 2028 table Sakat Chauth comes 3 days after Paush Purnima and 17 days before Vasant Panchami.

Within six days of Sakat Chauth in 2028: Paush Purnima (12 January) and Makar Sankranti (15 January).
