Ashwini and Revati nakshatra matching

one answer

Ashwini and Revati come to 24–27 of 36 with Ashwini on the bride's side and 23–26 with Revati on it. What sits behind those two figures: Varna, Tara, Graha Maitri, Gana and Nadi score in full, while Bhakoot (0 of 7), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2) do not, and Bhakoot on its own accounts for 7 of the guna that go missing.

The pada does not matter here. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way and Ashwini with Revati is one of them: every one of the sixteen cells in the grid below repeats the same total, so knowing the two birth stars is knowing the score.

Koota by Koota

Pada 1 on each side, and what every koota is reading for Ashwini with Revati. Varna and Gana are the two directional tests, which is why each name gets a column: Varna differs between them.

Ashtakoot koota scores for Ashwini with Revati at pada 1 on both sides, shown separately for each partner on the bride’s side, with the values each koota reads.

  • Bhakoot, 0 of 7Pisces and Aries — 12/2. One of the three forbidden distances, and Bhakoot is all or nothing.
  • Yoni, 1–3 of 4Revati: Elephant · Ashwini: Horse. Not the same animal, not a hostile pair, so the graded middle.
  • Vashya, 0–1 of 2Revati: Jalachar · Ashwini: Chatushpada. Neither the same group nor the agreed zero, so the graded middle where lineages differ.

Half-guna figures are exact rather than rounded. Each koota’s rule is set out in full on Ashwini’s table and Revati’s.

All Sixteen Pada Combinations

Ashwini runs Aries 0°00′ – 13°20′ and Revati runs Pisces 16°40′ – 30°00′ — two arcs 13°20′ wide, each divided into four padas of 3°20′, which puts the two Moons anywhere between 0°00′ and 26°40′ apart. Every cell below holds two totals: Ashwini as bride first, Revati as bride second. All sixteen read alike, so the padas can be left out of this one.

Ashtakoot totals out of 36 for Ashwini with Revati across all sixteen pada combinations, each cell giving Ashwini as bride then Revati as bride, on the strict reading of Yoni and Vashya.

Strict reading of the two disputed kootas throughout. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. All sixteen combinations clear the conventional threshold of 18. Dimmed cells fall below it; the nakshatra finder returns the pada from a birth date, time and place.

The Two Doshas, and Whether They Are Cancelled

Nadi and Bhakoot between them decide the shape of a result more than the total does — and both come with classical relief clauses that two named birth stars are enough to test.

Nadi Koota — 8 of 8

Ashwini is Adi (Vata) and Revati is Antya (Kapha). Different nadis take the full eight guna, and since Nadi alone is more than a fifth of the total, this pair starts from a position 108 of the 351 pairs never reach.

Bhakoot Koota — 0 of 7 at pada 1

In every pada combination, the two Moon signs stand at one of the three forbidden distances and Bhakoot gives nothing. The commonly cited cancellation covers all of them: Mars and Jupiter are mutual friends in the natural friendship table.

A cancellation is relief, not a score adjustment — the koota still reads zero above. The doshas Ashtakoot does not test for are a separate question — Mangal dosha among them.

Two Tests Outside the 36

The South Indian reckoning runs to ten kootas, and two of the extras are counts between Ashwini and Revati alone — so they can be given here and checked by hand.

  • Mahendra — absent. Mahendra wants every third star from the fourth — 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25 — and Ashwini to Revati is 27. The two counts always add to 29, so a Mahendra pair holds whichever way round the match is made.
  • Stri-Dirgha — satisfied one way. This one is directional in earnest: 27 from Ashwini and 2 from Revati, against a threshold sources give as seven or as nine. It holds with Ashwini as the bride and not with Revati.

Neither test touches the 36. Muhurta nature is a different question again — Ashwini is Kshipra / Laghu (swift and light), Revati is Mridu (tender) — and it governs what each star suits doing, not who it marries.

How the Pair Ranks on Each Side

A total carries meaning against the alternatives rather than on its own, and the alternatives differ for the two stars: 24 of 36 puts Revati 7th among Ashwini's 27 possible partners and Ashwini 10th among Revati's, both on the pada-1 figures those two tables print.

In Ashwini’s table

7th of 27

Revati scores 24 there, level with 1 other partner. Ashwini’s 27 partners run from 9 to 32 with a median of 22.5, so this one sits above the middle of what Ashwini can reach — all 27 rows.

In Revati’s table

10th of 27

Ashwini scores 24 there, level with 2 other partners. Revati’s 27 partners run from 5 to 32 with a median of 21.5, so this one sits above the middle of what Revati can reach — all 27 rows.

What This Total Is Not

Across every pairing of two Moon positions that can exist, 63.6% clear 18 and the median total is 20.5, so clearing the conventional bar is the ordinary result rather than a distinction. The ceiling is 35, not 36 — no pairing of Ashwini and Revati or of anything else reaches a perfect score, and a site reporting one has added something to the arithmetic.

Written rather than computed, and worth the longer read: the 36 guna taken one koota at a time and what the Navamsa adds that Guna Milan cannot. The full profiles of the two stars — deities, symbols, temperament, the syllables used for naming — are on the Ashwini page and the Revati page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guna do Ashwini and Revati score?
24–27 of 36 with Ashwini as the bride and 23–26 with Revati as the bride, taking pada 1 on both sides. The padas do not change it — all sixteen combinations give the same answer, which makes this one of the 146 pairs of 351 where the two birth stars settle the score outright. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. Against every possible pairing of two Moon positions, 63.6% clear 18 and the median is 20.5.
Are Ashwini and Revati compatible?
On Ashtakoot the conservative reading puts Ashwini with Revati at acceptable. The guna are lost on Bhakoot (0 of 7), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2). Read that as a filter result, not as a recommendation. A koota scoring zero — here Bhakoot — is the part worth taking to an astrologer rather than to a calculator.
Does the pada change the result for Ashwini and Revati?
No. Every one of the sixteen pada combinations returns the same total for Ashwini and Revati. Neither star crosses a boundary between its padas, so all four sit in one rashi and one half of it, and no koota can move. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way.
Do Ashwini and Revati have Bhakoot dosha?
Yes, in every pada combination: Pisces and Aries — 12/2 puts the signs at a forbidden distance, which costs all seven guna. The commonly cited cancellation does apply — the two sign lords, Mars and Jupiter, are mutual friends — and 108 of the 252 affected pairs are cancelled this way. Bhakoot is all or nothing: there is no partial score.
Is it better for Ashwini to be the bride or the groom?
On the arithmetic, Ashwini on the bride's side scores higher — 24–27 against 23–26. Varna and Gana are the only kootas that can do that, and here Varna goes from 1 with Ashwini as bride to 0 with Revati as bride. 314 of the 351 pairs move like this, so a calculator that takes two stars without asking who is the bride has picked a direction for you.

Run It On the Real Padas

The score is settled for Ashwini and Revati, but the doshas, the seventh house and the running dasha are not — and those are what a chart is for.
