one answer

Four of the eight kootas — Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi — are settled by the two birth stars alone, before anyone asks about a pada; the other four are read from the Moon rashi, which a pada can move. For Magha with Anuradha that leaves 4 of the eight at full marks — Varna, Graha Maitri, Bhakoot and Nadi — and 4 carrying a deduction: Gana (1 of 6), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2). The heaviest of them is Gana, where Anuradha: Deva · Magha: Rakshasa gives 1 of 6.

All sixteen combinations give the same answer. Neither star crosses a boundary of any kind between its padas, so the totals below are the whole result and the birth times only need to be accurate enough to fix the nakshatra. This pair is one of the 120 of 351 where that is true.

Koota by Koota

All eight kootas for Magha and Anuradha, taken at pada 1 each. Two columns because Varna and Gana can score differently by direction where the other six cannot: Varna and Gana differ between them.

Ashtakoot koota scores for Magha with Anuradha at pada 1 on both sides, shown separately for each partner on the bride’s side, with the values each koota reads.

  • Gana, 1 of 6Anuradha: Deva · Magha: Rakshasa. The gentle temperament is held to bear the cost of the forceful one unevenly.
  • Tara, 1.5 of 3Counting from Magha: Mitra (8) · from Anuradha: Vipat (3). Half the koota, because the count is unfavourable in one direction only.
  • Yoni, 1–3 of 4Anuradha: Deer · Magha: Rat. The middle of this koota, where tables give one, two or three guna.
  • Vashya, 0–1 of 2Anuradha: Keet · Magha: Vanachar. The middle of this koota: tables put a pair like this anywhere between half a guna and one.

Half-guna figures are exact rather than rounded. Each koota’s rule is set out in full on Magha’s table and Anuradha’s.

All Sixteen Pada Combinations

Magha runs Leo 0°00′ – 13°20′ and Anuradha runs Scorpio 3°20′ – 16°40′ — two arcs 13°20′ wide, each divided into four padas of 3°20′, which puts the two Moons anywhere between 80°00′ and 106°40′ apart. Every cell below holds two totals: Magha as bride first, Anuradha as bride second. All sixteen read alike, so the padas can be left out of this one.

Ashtakoot totals out of 36 for Magha with Anuradha across all sixteen pada combinations, each cell giving Magha as bride then Anuradha as bride, on the strict reading of Yoni and Vashya.

Strict reading of the two disputed kootas throughout. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. All sixteen combinations clear the conventional threshold of 18. Dimmed cells fall below it; the nakshatra finder returns the pada from a birth date, time and place.

The Two Doshas, and Whether They Are Cancelled

Fifteen of the 36 guna sit in these two, and both are all-or-nothing. Their cancellations are stated specifically enough to be checked for Magha and Anuradha rather than guessed at.

Nadi Koota — 8 of 8

Magha is Antya (Kapha) and Anuradha is Madhya (Pitta). Different nadis take the full eight guna, and since Nadi alone is more than a fifth of the total, this pair starts from a position 108 of the 351 pairs never reach.

Bhakoot Koota — 7 of 7 at pada 1

Scorpio and Leo — 4/10 — outside the three forbidden distances of 6/8, 5/9 and 2/12, and it stays outside them in all sixteen pada combinations. Bhakoot is full at seven throughout.

A cancellation is relief, not a score adjustment — the koota still reads zero above. The doshas Ashtakoot does not test for are a separate question — Mangal dosha among them.

Two Tests Outside the 36

Two tests the eight kootas leave out, both settled by the distance between the two stars: Magha to Anuradha is 8 and back is 21, counting inclusively.

  • Mahendra — absent. 8 stars between them, against a favourable set of 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25. 108 of the 351 pairs land on one of those.
  • Stri-Dirgha — satisfied one way. The count from the bride's star should pass nine — 8 with Magha as bride, 21 with Anuradha — and 135 pairs clear it both ways against 216 that clear it one way. It holds with Anuradha as the bride and not with Magha.

Neither test touches the 36. Muhurta nature is a different question again — Magha is Ugra / Krura (fierce), Anuradha is Mridu (tender) — and it governs what each star suits doing, not who it marries.

How the Pair Ranks on Each Side

The same 24.5 of 36 reads differently from each side, because each star is being compared with a different 27: 5th place in Magha's table, 8th in Anuradha's. Both positions can be checked by counting rows there — the figures are the ones those tables print.

In Magha’s table

5th of 27

Anuradha scores 24.5 there, level with 2 other partners. Magha’s 27 partners run from 3.5 to 33 with a median of 19.5, so this one sits above the middle of what Magha can reach — all 27 rows.

In Anuradha’s table

8th of 27

Magha scores 24.5 there outright. Anuradha’s 27 partners run from 12 to 31 with a median of 20, so this one sits above the middle of what Anuradha can reach — all 27 rows.

What This Total Is Not

One number cannot carry a marriage. Ashtakoot reads a single point from each chart — the Moon — so two people born hours apart with the Moon in Magha score identically here whatever else their charts do. The seventh house and its lord, Venus, Mars and Mangal dosha, and the dasha each partner is running are all outside it, and any of them can matter more than the difference between acceptable and the band above.

Written rather than computed, and worth the longer read: what the Navamsa adds that Guna Milan cannot and what a birth date alone can and cannot settle. The full profiles of the two stars — deities, symbols, temperament, the syllables used for naming — are on the Magha page and the Anuradha page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guna do Magha and Anuradha score?
24.5–27.5 of 36 with Magha as the bride and 22.5–25.5 with Anuradha as the bride, taking pada 1 on both sides. The padas do not change it — all sixteen combinations give the same answer, which makes this one of the 146 pairs of 351 where the two birth stars settle the score outright. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. Against every possible pairing of two Moon positions, 63.6% clear 18 and the median is 20.5.
Are Magha and Anuradha compatible?
On Ashtakoot the conservative reading puts Magha with Anuradha at acceptable. The guna are lost on Gana (1 of 6), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2). It is a filter, and filters do not recommend. No koota scores zero for this pair, which is worth more than the total itself.
Does the pada change the result for Magha and Anuradha?
No. Every one of the sixteen pada combinations returns the same total for Magha and Anuradha. Neither star crosses a boundary between its padas, so all four sit in one rashi and one half of it, and no koota can move. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way.
Do Magha and Anuradha have Bhakoot dosha?
No. The two Moon signs never fall at one of the three forbidden distances — 6/8 Shadashtaka, 5/9 Navapanchaka or 2/12 Dwirdwadasha — in any of the sixteen pada combinations, so Bhakoot scores its full seven throughout. Bhakoot is all or nothing: there is no partial score.
Is it better for Magha to be the bride or the groom?
On the arithmetic, Magha on the bride's side scores higher — 24.5–27.5 against 22.5–25.5. Varna and Gana are the only kootas that can do that, and here Varna goes from 1 with Magha as bride to 0 with Anuradha as bride and Gana goes from 1 with Magha as bride to 0 with Anuradha as bride. 314 of the 351 pairs move like this, so a calculator that takes two stars without asking who is the bride has picked a direction for you.

Run It On the Real Padas

The score is settled for Magha and Anuradha, but the doshas, the seventh house and the running dasha are not — and those are what a chart is for.
