Four of the eight kootas — Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi — are settled by the two birth stars alone, before anyone asks about a pada; the other four are read from the Moon rashi, which a pada can move. For Magha with Uttara Ashadha that leaves 2 of the eight at full marks — Varna and Graha Maitri — and 6 carrying a deduction: Nadi (0 of 8), Bhakoot (0 of 7), Gana (3 of 6), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2). The heaviest of them is Nadi, where Uttara Ashadha: Antya (Kapha) · Magha: Antya (Kapha) gives 0 of 8.

A swing of 6 guna separates the best and worst cells in the grid below — 5.5 at the bottom, 11.5 at the top. The cause is a boundary inside the four padas: Uttara Ashadha runs from Sagittarius into Capricorn after pada 1. Since Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot are all read from the Moon rashi rather than from the star, which puts 15 of the 36 guna on that boundary, which side of it the Moon fell on is not a detail.

Koota by Koota

All eight kootas for Magha and Uttara Ashadha, taken at pada 1 each. Two columns because Varna and Gana can score differently by direction where the other six cannot: Gana differs between them.

Ashtakoot koota scores for Magha with Uttara Ashadha at pada 1 on both sides, shown separately for each partner on the bride’s side, with the values each koota reads.

  • Nadi, 0 of 8Uttara Ashadha: Antya (Kapha) · Magha: Antya (Kapha). Eight guna on one comparison, and it is the whole of Nadi.
  • Bhakoot, 0 of 7Sagittarius and Leo — 5/9. A forbidden rashi distance, so all seven guna go at once.
  • Gana, 3 of 6Uttara Ashadha: Manushya · Magha: Rakshasa. The gentle temperament is held to bear the cost of the forceful one unevenly.
  • Tara, 1.5 of 3Counting from Magha: Vipat (3) · from Uttara Ashadha: Mitra (8). Half the koota, because the count is unfavourable in one direction only.
  • Yoni, 1–3 of 4Uttara Ashadha: Mongoose · Magha: Rat. The middle of this koota, where tables give one, two or three guna.
  • Vashya, 0–1 of 2Uttara Ashadha: Chatushpada · Magha: Vanachar. The middle of this koota: tables put a pair like this anywhere between half a guna and one.

Half-guna figures are exact rather than rounded. Each koota’s rule is set out in full on Magha’s table and Uttara Ashadha’s.

All Sixteen Pada Combinations

Magha runs Leo 0°00′ – 13°20′ and Uttara Ashadha runs Sagittarius 26°40′ – Capricorn 10°00′ — two arcs 13°20′ wide, each divided into four padas of 3°20′, which puts the two Moons anywhere between 133°20′ and 160°00′ apart. Every cell below holds two totals: Magha as bride first, Uttara Ashadha as bride second. The cells are not all the same, which is the point of printing them — 3.5 at the lowest and 11.5 at the highest.

Ashtakoot totals out of 36 for Magha with Uttara Ashadha across all sixteen pada combinations, each cell giving Magha as bride then Uttara Ashadha as bride, on the strict reading of Yoni and Vashya.

Strict reading of the two disputed kootas throughout. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. None of the sixteen clears the conventional threshold of 18 on this reading. Dimmed cells fall below it; the nakshatra finder returns the pada from a birth date, time and place.

The Two Doshas, and Whether They Are Cancelled

Nadi and Bhakoot between them decide the shape of a result more than the total does — and both come with classical relief clauses that two named birth stars are enough to test.

Nadi Koota — 0 of 8

Magha and Uttara Ashadha are both Antya (Kapha), so the plain rule gives nothing. None of the three recognised cancellations reaches this pair — the same star in different padas, both Moons in one rashi, or two rashis sharing a lord — so the eight guna are lost and 28 is the ceiling for Magha with Uttara Ashadha however well everything else goes.

Bhakoot Koota — 0 of 7 at pada 1

In every pada combination, the two Moon signs stand at one of the three forbidden distances and Bhakoot gives nothing. 4 of those 16 cells carry the cancellation and the rest do not, so the pada decides not just the score but whether the relief clause is available.

A cancellation is relief, not a score adjustment — the koota still reads zero above. Remedial practice for Nadi dosha is set out on the Nadi dosha page.

Two Tests Outside the 36

Two tests the eight kootas leave out, both settled by the distance between the two stars: Magha to Uttara Ashadha is 12 and back is 17, counting inclusively.

  • Mahendra — absent. 12 stars between them, against a favourable set of 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25. 108 of the 351 pairs land on one of those.
  • Stri-Dirgha — satisfied both ways. The count from the bride's star should pass nine — 12 with Magha as bride, 17 with Uttara Ashadha — and 135 pairs clear it both ways against 216 that clear it one way. It holds either way round here.

Neither test touches the 36. Muhurta nature is a different question again — Magha is Ugra / Krura (fierce), Uttara Ashadha is Dhruva / Sthira (fixed) — and it governs what each star suits doing, not who it marries.

How the Pair Ranks on Each Side

The same 11.5 of 36 reads differently from each side, because each star is being compared with a different 27: 24th place in Magha's table, 26th in Uttara Ashadha's. Both positions can be checked by counting rows there — the figures are the ones those tables print.

In Magha’s table

24th of 27

Uttara Ashadha scores 11.5 there outright. Magha’s 27 partners run from 3.5 to 33 with a median of 19.5, so this one sits below the middle of what Magha can reach — all 27 rows.

In Uttara Ashadha’s table

26th of 27

Magha scores 11.5 there outright. Uttara Ashadha’s 27 partners run from 9.5 to 31 with a median of 22, so this one sits below the middle of what Uttara Ashadha can reach — all 27 rows.

What This Total Is Not

One number cannot carry a marriage. Ashtakoot reads a single point from each chart — the Moon — so two people born hours apart with the Moon in Magha score identically here whatever else their charts do. The seventh house and its lord, Venus, Mars and Mangal dosha, and the dasha each partner is running are all outside it, and any of them can matter more than the difference between below the conventional threshold and the band above.

Written rather than computed, and worth the longer read: the Kundli Milan guide written from these numbers and the guide to all 27 birth stars. The full profiles of the two stars — deities, symbols, temperament, the syllables used for naming — are on the Magha page and the Uttara Ashadha page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guna do Magha and Uttara Ashadha score?
11.5–14.5 of 36 with Magha as the bride and 8.5–11.5 with Uttara Ashadha as the bride, taking pada 1 on both sides. The real padas move it: across all sixteen combinations the total runs from 5.5 to 11.5, and the grid on this page gives every cell. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. Against every possible pairing of two Moon positions, 63.6% clear 18 and the median is 20.5.
Are Magha and Uttara Ashadha compatible?
On Ashtakoot the conservative reading puts Magha with Uttara Ashadha at below the conventional threshold — under the 18 that families conventionally look for. The guna are lost on Nadi (0 of 8), Bhakoot (0 of 7), Gana (3 of 6), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2). It is a filter, and filters do not recommend. A koota scoring zero — here Bhakoot and Nadi — is the part worth taking to an astrologer rather than to a calculator.
Does the pada change the result for Magha and Uttara Ashadha?
Yes. Uttara Ashadha runs from Sagittarius into Capricorn after pada 1, and Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot are read from the Moon rashi rather than from the nakshatra, so 15 of the 36 guna move with that boundary. The total ranges from 5.5 to 11.5 across the sixteen combinations — a swing of 6 guna, against a median of 2 and a maximum of 14 over all 351 pairs. Only the birth times settle which cell applies.
Do Magha and Uttara Ashadha have Nadi dosha?
Yes on the plain rule: both birth stars fall in Antya (Kapha), and a shared nadi scores 0 of 8 — the largest single deduction in Ashtakoot. The three recognised cancellations — the same star in different padas, both Moons in one rashi, or two rashis sharing a lord — do not apply to Magha with Uttara Ashadha, so the eight guna are genuinely lost. That leaves a ceiling of 28 for this pair however well the other seven go. Across every possible pairing, 33.3% carry Nadi dosha and 23.2% of those are cancelled.
Is it better for Magha to be the bride or the groom?
On the arithmetic, Magha on the bride's side scores higher — 11.5–14.5 against 8.5–11.5. Varna and Gana are the only kootas that can do that, and here Gana goes from 3 with Magha as bride to 0 with Uttara Ashadha as bride. 314 of the 351 pairs move like this, so a calculator that takes two stars without asking who is the bride has picked a direction for you.

Run It On the Real Padas

The grid above narrows Magha and Uttara Ashadha to sixteen answers between 5.5 and 11.5. Two birth times pick one of them.
