one answer

Four of the eight kootas — Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi — are settled by the two birth stars alone, before anyone asks about a pada; the other four are read from the Moon rashi, which a pada can move. For Rohini with Ardra that leaves 3 of the eight at full marks — Graha Maitri, Gana and Nadi — and 5 carrying a deduction: Bhakoot (0 of 7), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4), Vashya (0–1 of 2) and Varna (0 of 1). The heaviest of them is Bhakoot, where Gemini and Taurus — 2/12 gives 0 of 7.

The pada does not matter here. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way and Rohini with Ardra is one of them: every one of the sixteen cells in the grid below repeats the same total, so knowing the two birth stars is knowing the score.

Koota by Koota

All eight kootas for Rohini and Ardra, taken at pada 1 each. Two columns because Varna and Gana can score differently by direction where the other six cannot: Varna differs between them.

Ashtakoot koota scores for Rohini with Ardra at pada 1 on both sides, shown separately for each partner on the bride’s side, with the values each koota reads.

  • Bhakoot, 0 of 7Gemini and Taurus — 2/12. A forbidden rashi distance, so all seven guna go at once.
  • Tara, 1.5 of 3Counting from Rohini: Vipat (3) · from Ardra: Mitra (8). Half the koota, because the count is unfavourable in one direction only.
  • Yoni, 1–3 of 4Ardra: Dog · Rohini: Serpent. The middle of this koota, where tables give one, two or three guna.
  • Vashya, 0–1 of 2Ardra: Manav · Rohini: Chatushpada. The middle of this koota: tables put a pair like this anywhere between half a guna and one.
  • Varna, 0 of 1Ardra: Shudra · Rohini: Vaishya. A deliberately one-way test on rank, failed in this direction. It is one point of thirty-six.

Half-guna figures are exact rather than rounded. Each koota’s rule is set out in full on Rohini’s table and Ardra’s.

All Sixteen Pada Combinations

Rohini runs Taurus 10°00′ – 23°20′ and Ardra runs Gemini 6°40′ – 20°00′ — two arcs 13°20′ wide, each divided into four padas of 3°20′, which puts the two Moons anywhere between 13°20′ and 40°00′ apart. Every cell below holds two totals: Rohini as bride first, Ardra as bride second. All sixteen read alike, so the padas can be left out of this one.

Ashtakoot totals out of 36 for Rohini with Ardra across all sixteen pada combinations, each cell giving Rohini as bride then Ardra as bride, on the strict reading of Yoni and Vashya.

Strict reading of the two disputed kootas throughout. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. All sixteen combinations clear the conventional threshold of 18. Dimmed cells fall below it; the nakshatra finder returns the pada from a birth date, time and place.

The Two Doshas, and Whether They Are Cancelled

Nadi and Bhakoot between them decide the shape of a result more than the total does — and both come with classical relief clauses that two named birth stars are enough to test.

Nadi Koota — 8 of 8

Rohini is Antya (Kapha) and Ardra is Adi (Vata). Different nadis take the full eight guna, and since Nadi alone is more than a fifth of the total, this pair starts from a position 108 of the 351 pairs never reach.

Bhakoot Koota — 0 of 7 at pada 1

In every pada combination, the two Moon signs stand at one of the three forbidden distances and Bhakoot gives nothing. The commonly cited cancellation covers all of them: Venus and Mercury are mutual friends in the natural friendship table.

A cancellation is relief, not a score adjustment — the koota still reads zero above. The doshas Ashtakoot does not test for are a separate question — Mangal dosha among them.

Two Tests Outside the 36

Two tests the eight kootas leave out, both settled by the distance between the two stars: Rohini to Ardra is 3 and back is 26, counting inclusively.

  • Mahendra — absent. 3 stars between them, against a favourable set of 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25. 108 of the 351 pairs land on one of those.
  • Stri-Dirgha — satisfied one way. The count from the bride's star should pass nine — 3 with Rohini as bride, 26 with Ardra — and 135 pairs clear it both ways against 216 that clear it one way. It holds with Ardra as the bride and not with Rohini.

Neither test touches the 36. Muhurta nature is a different question again — Rohini is Dhruva / Sthira (fixed), Ardra is Tikshna (sharp) — and it governs what each star suits doing, not who it marries.

How the Pair Ranks on Each Side

The same 22.5 of 36 reads differently from each side, because each star is being compared with a different 27: 12th place in Rohini's table, 14th in Ardra's. Both positions can be checked by counting rows there — the figures are the ones those tables print.

In Rohini’s table

12th of 27

Ardra scores 22.5 there, level with 1 other partner. Rohini’s 27 partners run from 11.5 to 35 with a median of 21.5, so this one sits above the middle of what Rohini can reach — all 27 rows.

In Ardra’s table

14th of 27

Rohini scores 22.5 there, level with 1 other partner. Ardra’s 27 partners run from 5 to 29 with a median of 22.5, so this one sits on the middle of what Ardra can reach — all 27 rows.

What This Total Is Not

One number cannot carry a marriage. Ashtakoot reads a single point from each chart — the Moon — so two people born hours apart with the Moon in Rohini score identically here whatever else their charts do. The seventh house and its lord, Venus, Mars and Mangal dosha, and the dasha each partner is running are all outside it, and any of them can matter more than the difference between acceptable and the band above.

Written rather than computed, and worth the longer read: what the Navamsa adds that Guna Milan cannot and what a birth date alone can and cannot settle. The full profiles of the two stars — deities, symbols, temperament, the syllables used for naming — are on the Rohini page and the Ardra page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guna do Rohini and Ardra score?
21.5–24.5 of 36 with Rohini as the bride and 22.5–25.5 with Ardra as the bride, taking pada 1 on both sides. The padas do not change it — all sixteen combinations give the same answer, which makes this one of the 146 pairs of 351 where the two birth stars settle the score outright. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. Against every possible pairing of two Moon positions, 63.6% clear 18 and the median is 20.5.
Are Rohini and Ardra compatible?
On Ashtakoot the conservative reading puts Rohini with Ardra at acceptable. The guna are lost on Bhakoot (0 of 7), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4), Vashya (0–1 of 2) and Varna (0 of 1). It is a filter, and filters do not recommend. A koota scoring zero — here Varna and Bhakoot — is the part worth taking to an astrologer rather than to a calculator.
Does the pada change the result for Rohini and Ardra?
No. Every one of the sixteen pada combinations returns the same total for Rohini and Ardra. Neither star crosses a boundary between its padas, so all four sit in one rashi and one half of it, and no koota can move. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way.
Do Rohini and Ardra have Bhakoot dosha?
Yes, in every pada combination: Gemini and Taurus — 2/12 puts the signs at a forbidden distance, which costs all seven guna. The commonly cited cancellation does apply — the two sign lords, Venus and Mercury, are mutual friends — and 108 of the 252 affected pairs are cancelled this way. Bhakoot is all or nothing: there is no partial score.
Is it better for Rohini to be the bride or the groom?
On the arithmetic, Ardra on the bride's side scores higher — 22.5–25.5 against 21.5–24.5. Varna and Gana are the only kootas that can do that, and here Varna goes from 0 with Rohini as bride to 1 with Ardra as bride. 314 of the 351 pairs move like this, so a calculator that takes two stars without asking who is the bride has picked a direction for you.

Run It On the Real Padas

The score is settled for Rohini and Ardra, but the doshas, the seventh house and the running dasha are not — and those are what a chart is for.
