Rohini and Magha nakshatra matching

one answer

Four of the eight kootas — Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi — are settled by the two birth stars alone, before anyone asks about a pada; the other four are read from the Moon rashi, which a pada can move. For Rohini with Magha that leaves 2 of the eight at full marks — Varna and Bhakoot — and 6 carrying a deduction: Nadi (0 of 8), Gana (0 of 6), Graha Maitri (0 of 5), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2). The heaviest of them is Nadi, where Magha: Antya (Kapha) · Rohini: Antya (Kapha) gives 0 of 8.

Worth stating because most matching sites imply otherwise: for Rohini and Magha the padas change nothing. Sixteen combinations, one answer. The exact minute of birth still decides plenty in a chart — it just does not decide this.

Koota by Koota

All eight kootas for Rohini and Magha, taken at pada 1 each. Two columns because Varna and Gana can score differently by direction where the other six cannot: Varna and Gana differ between them.

Ashtakoot koota scores for Rohini with Magha at pada 1 on both sides, shown separately for each partner on the bride’s side, with the values each koota reads.

  • Nadi, 0 of 8Magha: Antya (Kapha) · Rohini: Antya (Kapha). Eight guna on one comparison, and it is the whole of Nadi.
  • Gana, 0 of 6Magha: Rakshasa · Rohini: Manushya. The gentle temperament is held to bear the cost of the forceful one unevenly.
  • Graha Maitri, 0 of 5Magha: Sun · Rohini: Venus. Mutual enemies on the largest of the temperament kootas.
  • Tara, 1.5 of 3Counting from Rohini: Vadha (7) · from Magha: Kshema (4). Half the koota, because the count is unfavourable in one direction only.
  • Yoni, 1–3 of 4Magha: Rat · Rohini: Serpent. The middle of this koota, where tables give one, two or three guna.
  • Vashya, 0–1 of 2Magha: Vanachar · Rohini: Chatushpada. The middle of this koota: tables put a pair like this anywhere between half a guna and one.

Half-guna figures are exact rather than rounded. Each koota’s rule is set out in full on Rohini’s table and Magha’s.

All Sixteen Pada Combinations

Rohini runs Taurus 10°00′ – 23°20′ and Magha runs Leo 0°00′ – 13°20′ — two arcs 13°20′ wide, each divided into four padas of 3°20′, which puts the two Moons anywhere between 66°40′ and 93°20′ apart. Every cell below holds two totals: Rohini as bride first, Magha as bride second. All sixteen read alike, so the padas can be left out of this one.

Ashtakoot totals out of 36 for Rohini with Magha across all sixteen pada combinations, each cell giving Rohini as bride then Magha as bride, on the strict reading of Yoni and Vashya.

Strict reading of the two disputed kootas throughout. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. None of the sixteen clears the conventional threshold of 18 on this reading. Dimmed cells fall below it; the nakshatra finder returns the pada from a birth date, time and place.

The Two Doshas, and Whether They Are Cancelled

The two heavy kootas, checked with their cancellations. Neither gives a partial score, so each is worth 8 and 7 guna outright or nothing at all.

Nadi Koota — 0 of 8

Rohini and Magha are both Antya (Kapha), so the plain rule gives nothing. None of the three recognised cancellations reaches this pair — the same star in different padas, both Moons in one rashi, or two rashis sharing a lord — so the eight guna are lost and 28 is the ceiling for Rohini with Magha however well everything else goes.

Bhakoot Koota — 7 of 7 at pada 1

Leo and Taurus — 4/10 — outside the three forbidden distances of 6/8, 5/9 and 2/12, and it stays outside them in all sixteen pada combinations. Bhakoot is full at seven throughout.

A cancellation is relief, not a score adjustment — the koota still reads zero above. Remedial practice for Nadi dosha is set out on the Nadi dosha page.

Two Tests Outside the 36

Two tests the eight kootas leave out, both settled by the distance between the two stars: Rohini to Magha is 7 and back is 22, counting inclusively.

  • Mahendra — present. 7 stars between them, against a favourable set of 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25. 108 of the 351 pairs land on one of those.
  • Stri-Dirgha — satisfied one way. The count from the bride's star should pass nine — 7 with Rohini as bride, 22 with Magha — and 135 pairs clear it both ways against 216 that clear it one way. It holds with Magha as the bride and not with Rohini.

Neither test touches the 36. Muhurta nature is a different question again — Rohini is Dhruva / Sthira (fixed), Magha is Ugra / Krura (fierce) — and it governs what each star suits doing, not who it marries.

How the Pair Ranks on Each Side

The same 12.5 of 36 reads differently from each side, because each star is being compared with a different 27: 24th place in Rohini's table, 23rd in Magha's. Both positions can be checked by counting rows there — the figures are the ones those tables print.

In Rohini’s table

24th of 27

Magha scores 12.5 there, level with 1 other partner. Rohini’s 27 partners run from 11.5 to 35 with a median of 21.5, so this one sits below the middle of what Rohini can reach — all 27 rows.

In Magha’s table

23rd of 27

Rohini scores 12.5 there outright. Magha’s 27 partners run from 3.5 to 33 with a median of 19.5, so this one sits below the middle of what Magha can reach — all 27 rows.

What This Total Is Not

One number cannot carry a marriage. Ashtakoot reads a single point from each chart — the Moon — so two people born hours apart with the Moon in Rohini score identically here whatever else their charts do. The seventh house and its lord, Venus, Mars and Mangal dosha, and the dasha each partner is running are all outside it, and any of them can matter more than the difference between below the conventional threshold and the band above.

Written rather than computed, and worth the longer read: the Kundli Milan guide written from these numbers and the guide to all 27 birth stars. The full profiles of the two stars — deities, symbols, temperament, the syllables used for naming — are on the Rohini page and the Magha page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guna do Rohini and Magha score?
10.5–13.5 of 36 with Rohini as the bride and 12.5–15.5 with Magha as the bride, taking pada 1 on both sides. The padas do not change it — all sixteen combinations give the same answer, which makes this one of the 146 pairs of 351 where the two birth stars settle the score outright. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. Against every possible pairing of two Moon positions, 63.6% clear 18 and the median is 20.5.
Are Rohini and Magha compatible?
On Ashtakoot the conservative reading puts Rohini with Magha at below the conventional threshold — under the 18 that families conventionally look for. The guna are lost on Nadi (0 of 8), Gana (0 of 6), Graha Maitri (0 of 5), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4) and Vashya (0–1 of 2). It is a filter, and filters do not recommend. A koota scoring zero — here Graha Maitri, Gana and Nadi — is the part worth taking to an astrologer rather than to a calculator.
Does the pada change the result for Rohini and Magha?
No. Every one of the sixteen pada combinations returns the same total for Rohini and Magha. Neither star crosses a boundary between its padas, so all four sit in one rashi and one half of it, and no koota can move. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way.
Do Rohini and Magha have Nadi dosha?
Yes on the plain rule: both birth stars fall in Antya (Kapha), and a shared nadi scores 0 of 8 — the largest single deduction in Ashtakoot. The three recognised cancellations — the same star in different padas, both Moons in one rashi, or two rashis sharing a lord — do not apply to Rohini with Magha, so the eight guna are genuinely lost. That leaves a ceiling of 28 for this pair however well the other seven go. Across every possible pairing, 33.3% carry Nadi dosha and 23.2% of those are cancelled.
Is it better for Rohini to be the bride or the groom?
On the arithmetic, Magha on the bride's side scores higher — 12.5–15.5 against 10.5–13.5. Varna and Gana are the only kootas that can do that, and here Varna goes from 1 with Rohini as bride to 0 with Magha as bride and Gana goes from 0 with Rohini as bride to 3 with Magha as bride. 314 of the 351 pairs move like this, so a calculator that takes two stars without asking who is the bride has picked a direction for you.

Run It On the Real Padas

The score is settled for Rohini and Magha, but the doshas, the seventh house and the running dasha are not — and those are what a chart is for.
