Rohini and Shatabhisha nakshatra matching

22.5–25.5 of 36 with Rohini as bride, 26.5–29.5 with Shatabhisha as bride — then computed again for all sixteen pada combinations.

one answer

Reading the eight kootas in order for Rohini and Shatabhisha: Gana is where the largest deduction falls — Shatabhisha: Rakshasa · Rohini: Manushya, so 0 of 6, with Tara at 1.5 of 3, Yoni at 1–3 of 4, Vashya at 0–1 of 2 and Varna at 0 of 1 behind it. The remaining 3 kootas are complete, which puts the pair at 22.5–25.5 one way round and 26.5–29.5 the other.

The pada does not matter here. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way and Rohini with Shatabhisha is one of them: every one of the sixteen cells in the grid below repeats the same total, so knowing the two birth stars is knowing the score.

Koota by Koota

All eight kootas for Rohini and Shatabhisha, taken at pada 1 each. Two columns because Varna and Gana can score differently by direction where the other six cannot: Varna and Gana differ between them.

Ashtakoot koota scores for Rohini with Shatabhisha at pada 1 on both sides, shown separately for each partner on the bride’s side, with the values each koota reads.

  • Gana, 0 of 6Shatabhisha: Rakshasa · Rohini: Manushya. The gentle temperament is held to bear the cost of the forceful one unevenly.
  • Tara, 1.5 of 3Counting from Rohini: Vipat (3) · from Shatabhisha: Mitra (8). Half the koota, because the count is unfavourable in one direction only.
  • Yoni, 1–3 of 4Shatabhisha: Horse · Rohini: Serpent. The middle of this koota, where tables give one, two or three guna.
  • Vashya, 0–1 of 2Shatabhisha: Manav · Rohini: Chatushpada. The middle of this koota: tables put a pair like this anywhere between half a guna and one.
  • Varna, 0 of 1Shatabhisha: Shudra · Rohini: Vaishya. A deliberately one-way test on rank, failed in this direction. It is one point of thirty-six.

Half-guna figures are exact rather than rounded. Each koota’s rule is set out in full on Rohini’s table and Shatabhisha’s.

All Sixteen Pada Combinations

Rohini runs Taurus 10°00′ – 23°20′ and Shatabhisha runs Aquarius 6°40′ – 20°00′ — two arcs 13°20′ wide, each divided into four padas of 3°20′, which puts the two Moons anywhere between 80°00′ and 106°40′ apart. Every cell below holds two totals: Rohini as bride first, Shatabhisha as bride second. All sixteen read alike, so the padas can be left out of this one.

Ashtakoot totals out of 36 for Rohini with Shatabhisha across all sixteen pada combinations, each cell giving Rohini as bride then Shatabhisha as bride, on the strict reading of Yoni and Vashya.

Strict reading of the two disputed kootas throughout. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. All sixteen combinations clear the conventional threshold of 18. Dimmed cells fall below it; the nakshatra finder returns the pada from a birth date, time and place.

The Two Doshas, and Whether They Are Cancelled

Nadi and Bhakoot between them decide the shape of a result more than the total does — and both come with classical relief clauses that two named birth stars are enough to test.

Nadi Koota — 8 of 8

Rohini is Antya (Kapha) and Shatabhisha is Adi (Vata). Different nadis take the full eight guna, and since Nadi alone is more than a fifth of the total, this pair starts from a position 108 of the 351 pairs never reach.

Bhakoot Koota — 7 of 7 at pada 1

Aquarius and Taurus — 10/4 — outside the three forbidden distances of 6/8, 5/9 and 2/12, and it stays outside them in all sixteen pada combinations. Bhakoot is full at seven throughout.

A cancellation is relief, not a score adjustment — the koota still reads zero above. The doshas Ashtakoot does not test for are a separate question — Mangal dosha among them.

Two Tests Outside the 36

Two tests the eight kootas leave out, both settled by the distance between the two stars: Rohini to Shatabhisha is 21 and back is 8, counting inclusively.

  • Mahendra — absent. 21 stars between them, against a favourable set of 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25. 108 of the 351 pairs land on one of those.
  • Stri-Dirgha — satisfied one way. The count from the bride's star should pass nine — 21 with Rohini as bride, 8 with Shatabhisha — and 135 pairs clear it both ways against 216 that clear it one way. It holds with Rohini as the bride and not with Shatabhisha.

Neither test touches the 36. Muhurta nature is a different question again — Rohini is Dhruva / Sthira (fixed), Shatabhisha is Chara (movable) — and it governs what each star suits doing, not who it marries.

How the Pair Ranks on Each Side

The same 26.5 of 36 reads differently from each side, because each star is being compared with a different 27: 4th place in Rohini's table, 2nd in Shatabhisha's. Both positions can be checked by counting rows there — the figures are the ones those tables print.

In Rohini’s table

4th of 27

Shatabhisha scores 26.5 there, level with 1 other partner. Rohini’s 27 partners run from 11.5 to 35 with a median of 21.5, so this one sits above the middle of what Rohini can reach — all 27 rows.

In Shatabhisha’s table

2nd of 27

Rohini scores 26.5 there, level with 1 other partner. Shatabhisha’s 27 partners run from 9.5 to 28 with a median of 21.5, so this one sits above the middle of what Shatabhisha can reach — all 27 rows.

What This Total Is Not

What the breakdown says matters more than where the total lands. A high figure sitting on a zero in Nadi or Bhakoot is a different proposition from the same figure earned evenly across the eight, and 18 of 36 is a threshold families use rather than a rule any classical text states.

Written rather than computed, and worth the longer read: kundli matching for marriage, end to end and the 36 guna taken one koota at a time. The full profiles of the two stars — deities, symbols, temperament, the syllables used for naming — are on the Rohini page and the Shatabhisha page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guna do Rohini and Shatabhisha score?
22.5–25.5 of 36 with Rohini as the bride and 26.5–29.5 with Shatabhisha as the bride, taking pada 1 on both sides. The padas do not change it — all sixteen combinations give the same answer, which makes this one of the 146 pairs of 351 where the two birth stars settle the score outright. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. Against every possible pairing of two Moon positions, 63.6% clear 18 and the median is 20.5.
Are Rohini and Shatabhisha compatible?
On Ashtakoot the conservative reading puts Rohini with Shatabhisha at good. The guna are lost on Gana (0 of 6), Tara (1.5 of 3), Yoni (1–3 of 4), Vashya (0–1 of 2) and Varna (0 of 1). It is a filter, and filters do not recommend. A koota scoring zero — here Varna and Gana — is the part worth taking to an astrologer rather than to a calculator.
Does the pada change the result for Rohini and Shatabhisha?
No. Every one of the sixteen pada combinations returns the same total for Rohini and Shatabhisha. Neither star crosses a boundary between its padas, so all four sit in one rashi and one half of it, and no koota can move. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way.
Do Rohini and Shatabhisha have Bhakoot dosha?
No. The two Moon signs never fall at one of the three forbidden distances — 6/8 Shadashtaka, 5/9 Navapanchaka or 2/12 Dwirdwadasha — in any of the sixteen pada combinations, so Bhakoot scores its full seven throughout. Bhakoot is all or nothing: there is no partial score.
Is it better for Rohini to be the bride or the groom?
On the arithmetic, Shatabhisha on the bride's side scores higher — 26.5–29.5 against 22.5–25.5. Varna and Gana are the only kootas that can do that, and here Varna goes from 0 with Rohini as bride to 1 with Shatabhisha as bride and Gana goes from 0 with Rohini as bride to 3 with Shatabhisha as bride. 314 of the 351 pairs move like this, so a calculator that takes two stars without asking who is the bride has picked a direction for you.

Run It On the Real Padas

The score is settled for Rohini and Shatabhisha, but the doshas, the seventh house and the running dasha are not — and those are what a chart is for.
