Rohini and Swati nakshatra matching

one answer
Rohini and Swati come to 12.5–15.5 of 36 with Rohini on the bride's side and 13.5–16.5 with Swati on it. What sits behind those two figures: Graha Maitri scores in full, while Nadi (0 of 8), Bhakoot (0 of 7), Tara (1.5 of 3), Gana (5 of 6), Yoni (1–3 of 4), Vashya (0–1 of 2) and Varna (0 of 1) do not, and Nadi on its own accounts for 8 of the guna that go missing.
The pada does not matter here. 120 of the 351 pairs behave this way and Rohini with Swati is one of them: every one of the sixteen cells in the grid below repeats the same total, so knowing the two birth stars is knowing the score.
Koota by Koota
Pada 1 on each side, and what every koota is reading for Rohini with Swati. Varna and Gana are the two directional tests, which is why each name gets a column: Varna differs between them.
| Koota | Rohini bride | Swati bride | What it reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna / 1 | 0 | 1 | Swati: Shudra · Rohini: Vaishya |
| Vashya / 2 | 0–1 | 0–1 | Swati: Manav · Rohini: Chatushpada |
| Tara / 3 | 1.5 | 1.5 | Counting from Rohini: Vipat (3) · from Swati: Mitra (8) |
| Yoni / 4 | 1–3 | 1–3 | Swati: Buffalo · Rohini: Serpent |
| Graha Maitri / 5 | 5 | 5 | Swati: Venus · Rohini: Venus |
| Gana / 6 | 5 | 5 | Swati: Deva · Rohini: Manushya |
| Bhakoot / 7 | 0 | 0 | Libra and Taurus — 6/8 |
| Nadi / 8 | 0 | 0 | Swati: Antya (Kapha) · Rohini: Antya (Kapha) |
| Total / 36 | 12.5–15.5 | 13.5–16.5 | Below the conventional threshold |
- Nadi, 0 of 8 — Swati: Antya (Kapha) · Rohini: Antya (Kapha). The heaviest koota in the system, all or nothing.
- Bhakoot, 0 of 7 — Libra and Taurus — 6/8. One of the three forbidden distances, and Bhakoot is all or nothing.
- Tara, 1.5 of 3 — Counting from Rohini: Vipat (3) · from Swati: Mitra (8). One count of the two is inauspicious and the other is not, which halves the koota.
- Gana, 5 of 6 — Swati: Deva · Rohini: Manushya. Deva with Manushya, five of six either way round — the mildest of the mixed results.
- Yoni, 1–3 of 4 — Swati: Buffalo · Rohini: Serpent. Not the same animal, not a hostile pair, so the graded middle.
- Vashya, 0–1 of 2 — Swati: Manav · Rohini: Chatushpada. Neither the same group nor the agreed zero, so the graded middle where lineages differ.
- Varna, 0 of 1 — Swati: Shudra · Rohini: Vaishya. The groom's rank has to reach the bride's and does not. One guna, and no tradition treats it as disqualifying.
Half-guna figures are exact rather than rounded. Each koota’s rule is set out in full on Rohini’s table and Swati’s.
All Sixteen Pada Combinations
Rohini runs Taurus 10°00′ – 23°20′ and Swati runs Libra 6°40′ – 20°00′ — two arcs 13°20′ wide, each divided into four padas of 3°20′, which puts the two Moons anywhere between 133°20′ and 160°00′ apart. Every cell below holds two totals: Rohini as bride first, Swati as bride second. All sixteen read alike, so the padas can be left out of this one.
| Rohini ↓ / Swati → | Pada 1Libra | Pada 2Libra | Pada 3Libra | Pada 4Libra |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pada 1Taurus | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 |
| Pada 2Taurus | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 |
| Pada 3Taurus | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 |
| Pada 4Taurus | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 | 12.5 / 13.5 |
Strict reading of the two disputed kootas throughout. The generous reading of Yoni and Vashya adds 3 guna to every cell. None of the sixteen clears the conventional threshold of 18 on this reading. Dimmed cells fall below it; the nakshatra finder returns the pada from a birth date, time and place.
The Two Doshas, and Whether They Are Cancelled
Nadi and Bhakoot between them decide the shape of a result more than the total does — and both come with classical relief clauses that two named birth stars are enough to test.
Nadi Koota — 0 of 8
Rohini and Swati are both Antya (Kapha), so the plain rule gives nothing. The cancellation applies: Taurus and Libra are both ruled by Venus, which the texts hold voids Nadi dosha outright. Only 5 of the 108 same-nadi pairs qualify, so this is the uncommon case.
Bhakoot Koota — 0 of 7 at pada 1
In every pada combination, the two Moon signs stand at one of the three forbidden distances and Bhakoot gives nothing. The commonly cited cancellation covers all of them: both signs answer to Venus.
A cancellation is relief, not a score adjustment — the koota still reads zero above. Remedial practice for Nadi dosha is set out on the Nadi dosha page.
Two Tests Outside the 36
The South Indian reckoning runs to ten kootas, and two of the extras are counts between Rohini and Swati alone — so they can be given here and checked by hand.
- Mahendra — absent. Mahendra wants every third star from the fourth — 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25 — and Rohini to Swati is 12. The two counts always add to 29, so a Mahendra pair holds whichever way round the match is made.
- Stri-Dirgha — satisfied both ways. This one is directional in earnest: 12 from Rohini and 17 from Swati, against a threshold sources give as seven or as nine. It holds either way round here.
Neither test touches the 36. Muhurta nature is a different question again — Rohini is Dhruva / Sthira (fixed), Swati is Chara (movable) — and it governs what each star suits doing, not who it marries.
How the Pair Ranks on Each Side
A total carries meaning against the alternatives rather than on its own, and the alternatives differ for the two stars: 13.5 of 36 puts Swati 22nd among Rohini's 27 possible partners and Rohini 23rd among Swati's, both on the pada-1 figures those two tables print.
In Rohini’s table
22nd of 27
Swati scores 13.5 there outright. Rohini’s 27 partners run from 11.5 to 35 with a median of 21.5, so this one sits below the middle of what Rohini can reach — all 27 rows.
In Swati’s table
23rd of 27
Rohini scores 13.5 there, level with 1 other partner. Swati’s 27 partners run from 10 to 28 with a median of 21.5, so this one sits below the middle of what Swati can reach — all 27 rows.
What This Total Is Not
Across every pairing of two Moon positions that can exist, 63.6% clear 18 and the median total is 20.5, so clearing the conventional bar is the ordinary result rather than a distinction. The ceiling is 35, not 36 — no pairing of Rohini and Swati or of anything else reaches a perfect score, and a site reporting one has added something to the arithmetic.
Written rather than computed, and worth the longer read: Venus, and what it decides about a marriage and the Kundli Milan guide written from these numbers. The full profiles of the two stars — deities, symbols, temperament, the syllables used for naming — are on the Rohini page and the Swati page.
